Hacking WebTV?
Anyone interested?

what does everyone think about this idea:

I have never used a WebTV system or set one up, but from what i have read, It is possible to use your own ISP with webtv, although you still have to pay for the WebTV service (at a reduced cost). I saw a Sony webtv system in cashbusters yesterday for 60$ CDN.. I was just wondering if people think that this is possible..

Connect the 56k modem directly to another modem without a phone line using the 9v battery trick (as used in the I-Opener hack) and basically create a small software package to emulate the WebTV network, authenticating the device. This way it could be possible to make a small web client accessing it's internet off of a NAT solution such as smoothwall or internet connection sharing.

On the other side, has anyone popped one of these machines open and found a way to hack into it?

It must have some flash ram for product updates and mail storage, which might be used to hold a bootloader to load a small os through a bootp server like linux or qnx

let me know what you think, I havent found any i-openers, webpads, web surfer, etc.. in my area and I am looking for a small web/telnet/mail client

Hey, Spine I asked this question 2 years ago and still no one but you and me see the need to liberate us webtv users from the beast! Could some one tell all of interested in hacking the webtv-plus box why it seems to be so difficult to hack a box with a 1 gig HD,167nhz processer,16megs-flash,8megs-sdram,2megs-boot,56k-modem a parralel port & (the real mystery) what is this ultrawide SCSI looking port on the side under the expantion port panel?! So yes I opened it up but dont have the skills you guys have to kick some serious butt. The world is waiting on you and Sony,Playstation2 could realese a software packeage to connect a webtv device to a PS-2 and use its HD as a host simular to the 9v trick.

In the case of the original I-Opener, the compatibility to a standard x86 PC and the heavy subsidy that Netpliance offered to us made it worthwhile to repurpose the unit. It also helped that it had very competitive specs, even by today's standards.

It's not that worthwhile to focus attention on the WebTV or successors, given that one can get an Athlon motherboard + CPU for less than $50 today, compared to the non-standard wimpy MIPS CPUs on the WebTV. Also, Microsoft did not lavish as much of a subsidy on the WebTV units as Netpliance. Finally, Microsoft appears to have pulled the plug on WebTV and UltimateTV hardware, so it's bound to show up sooner or later at even lower prices.

I have been lurking this board for a couple of years now and one thing that I cannot stand is for the "Super Stars" of hacking to discourage newbies.I have been into electronics for at least 25 years and have seen a lot of wild stuff out there just because someone thought it could be done.Just because no one else thinks it can be done not make it not less worthy of hacking.Heck some of the coolest hacks I have seen where done "cause it was there"Hack on dude!
BTW where do you live?(Athlon cpu + motherboard less than $50)Yeah Right

The problem with hacking the webtv boxes is they use custom chips.
you can get the info on the cpu (mips) but the chip that does the video
(and other stuff) is custom you will not get the info on it you would
have to reverse engineer the software to figure it out..

it would be nice to do.

Billj:

1. I have not, at any time, claimed to be a superstar or whatever, of anything.

2. The technical feasibility of hacking something is entirely distinct from its economic viability. The I-Opener hack was both economically viable and technically feasible. But above all, it was fun.

3. If hacking the WebTV appeals to your sense of fun, by all means go ahead and do so. Far be it from me to discourage anybody from this kind of activity. As long as there is stuff to be learned from opening things up, it is worthwhile.

4. Do not expect any magic silk purses from sow's ears. As long as your expectations are not sky high, you will not be disappointed.

5. Regarding Athlon MB + CPU for $50, I would suggest a visit to discount retailers like Fry's and keeping a look out for closeouts and bargains. I have indeed recently purchased a Soyo K7VTA Pro + Thunderbird/750 for a total of $44.80 + tax, which may still be available at selected Fry's outlets, but YMMV.

Codeman, I'd be willing to let you dig into this unit I have, are you near DC? Or do you have a server I can dialup and let you act as a host simular to msntv.
