New CD-Booting BIOS

Hi all,

After numerous delays, I'm happy to announce that I've created a new I-Opener BIOS upgrade. This version will likely become a BadFlash exclusive if it passes his Q/A testing.

New Features:
(*) Pressing <DEL> actually goes to Setup Screen
(*) Programmer's FixUSB, Memory-Interleave, and Mode CO80 Fix (Huge Thanks to Programmer for this!)
(*) A new "SMARTBOOT" option in the BIOS's Boot-Order Menu, so you can selectively launch the Smart Boot Manager when you need it; else use "C,A,SCSI" to boot normally. (It sure helped my IOpener when the disk's MBR got hosed by LILO). FYI, Smart Boot Manager includes the CDROM Booting Support.

Stuff that didn't make it in this Release:
(*)Floppy Disk Support. This one's gonna be a little tougher than I thought.

Forgot to add.. many of the annoying pop-up windows of the old CD-BOOT BIOS were removed in this release.

Wild_Pencil would you be able to help us over
in the Gateway GCT group. We haven't been
able to get into the bios setup screen.

You the man! Will there be a flashable BIOS image for the earlier machines? I have two, both gooped, and neither have given me a lick of trouble. I'd rather not scrape if I don't have to.

So, you and Badflash Jack are going to sell the modified IOpener BIOS? How legal is that? For that matter this is a hackers board. How ethical is it to take input from the group and then sell the result for a profit? What about the majority of us that don't need a new chip but want the latest BIOS? Must we but a new chip from Jack to get it?

Say it ain't so Pencil!

FWIW....Up till this point, Badflash will reflash your chip for $10, ten dollars US, a couple of Burgers at McDonalds...etc. You can't get a better deal anywhere. Badflash has used input from this BBS to develop all his products, very unique products I might add. If you can find anything wrong with fixing a crippled BIOS, and making a few bucks selling the fix, you're living in a different world......This is probably the cheapest upgrade you will ever do. Everyone involved in this project deserves high praise.

Sounds decent,
Though I'd prefer to wait until someone posts it somewhere... Badflash is nice if you have a badflash...

I am reluctant to install a CD ROM on my I-Opener at least as an IDE device as my understanding is this may adversely affect hard drive performance... however i really enjoy USB CD RW drives... so any chance a bootable USB CD ROM BIOS is possible (for that I'd pay, as USB booting really would help enormously, it's easier if my hard drive needs to be reinstalled to just open the I-O and take it over to a desktop/tower box then boot off the CD ROM there).

Nice work... just I suspect most have gone either to NO CD ROM or to a USB CD ROM in I-Openers

El_Kabong, you are confusing hackers and crackers

crackers do illegal things, hackers just like to poke around and figure things out...poking around and upgrading a BIOS is not cracking, it is hacking and there's nothing wrong with that

El_Kabong,

I chose to let Badflash have the first opportunity to distribute this ROM for several reasons. Believe me, if I were doing this for money, I'd be taking a HUGE loss -- no money could compensate for all the sleep-deprived nights of hacking the BIOS, and pissing off the girlfriend when I'm "soooo close" to a breakthrough. About the only reward that makes it worthwhile is the occasional appreciative email.

Badflash has a reputation for quality and customer service. I'm entrusting him to do dilligent Q/A tests on this BIOS before releasing it to the masses. After that, who knows.. maybe a downloadable Image will show up on Free-drive for you.

If he distributes the BIOS, he'll be answering all the FAQ's from newbies. I don't have time to answer all the emailed questions I get through this BBS -- especially when it's someone who's too clueless to find a copy AWDFLASH off the 'Net. The last few BIOS releases (v5Patched and v5CDBOOT_Beta) flooded my email box for days. 'Nuff Said.

Thanks for understanding.

Thanks W_P,
I would definitely buy you a beer, or the beverage of your choice, if I ever run into you outside of cyber life. ;->
