Group Buy? Metrobook SLT P233 MMX 8.4" TFT Touchscreen mmm....
well, here we go again

Profile
Hi all

I bought a Metrobook SLT yesterday and it is the most amazing little toy I've ever played with.. Anyways I was wondering if there is interest I can set up a group buy just like the Norands.. I would also like to get some more of these for myself, cheaper.

Here are the specs
P233MMX
8.4" TFT Touchscreen
takes up to 128 MB PC100 SDRAM SODIMM (same as iopener)
takes 9.5mm notebook hard drive
24X CDROM + floppy
2 PCMCIA slots (CardBus + ZV)
9.5" wide X 6.25" deep X 1.5" high
2 USB ports
Lithium Ion battery (lasts 1.5 hour)
Its really really small

The guy has 50+ brand NEW units in original boxes. They come with everything except memory/hd (I borrowed both from my iopener 128m and 6gb) including ac adapter, manuals, cd rom, floppy, carrying case...

Here is a link to a current ebay auction for it, for a look at internals (the one on ebay is one model older (p200mmx) than what I got, but looks same)..

http://cgi.ebay.com/aw-cgi/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=1250628662

I bought mine for $400, but he will cut me deal of $360 ea for 10+ units, or $320 ea for 20+ units...NEW

As far as I've researched it is known by many other names as Aurora MNB-6500, Gigatech MNB-6000 (which I think is original manufacturer), and Ergo MiniBook (in UK). It uses Sharp TFT LQ084S1DH01, and Gigatech touchscreen, Neomagic Magicgraph 128ZV+ video chip, Intel 430TX chipset. I've got WinME running on it in my car play mp3s + dvd drive playing dvds w/ margi dvd2go. Win2k works fine too.

And the story on these is that Metrobook went down the drain and these have been sitting in GTSI warehouse for 8 months, and apparently Metrobook took orders and then integrated the hard drive and memory -- so these are all brand new w/out hd/mem.

Well email me at bsingh@purdue.edu. The first 10 people will get one (dont want to ship 20 units =( BUT if someone helps me ship then 20+ =) and also if theres enough interest. Oh also, the guy has extra batteries and car adapters, maybe we can setup a separate group buy on those let me know if interested.

Sounds very Interesting. I was able to find a number of favorable reviews. This notebook originally sold for $1900.00. Do you have any idea on who would service this unit?

Interested, but not ready to commit yet.
Do you have a price on the auto-adapter and extra batteries?

Wanted to update because I got questions on these

IrDA port
Keyboard + mouse connectors
External monitor port
and Yes its active matrix
it has line out/ mic input holes
The cpu is socketed but don't know where to find upgrade -- can take up to 300mmx

Bayman: Dont know price on extra batteries yet, but the guy is selling auto adapters for $35 a piece but we can probably talk him down if enough people are interested. It is one of those laptop ones that go from 12V --> 16V DC.

Not to put the smack on this. It looks kewl, but you can get the HP Omnibook 800CT used for a LOT less than this. They are AWESOME and very mainstream components.

Well I've got ~13 people that are sure so the price is at $360 -- I need 5 more to get them for $320 each which I would really like so if interested for sure then email me at bsingh@purdue.edu. I've already got someone helping me ship / thanks Mark.

MISMan: I was considering Toshiba 70/100CT and the HP Omnibook but they are way slower (~166mmx) and don't support 128 sdram I want for win2k. also no touchscreen which i really wanted for my car and also ZV port for DVD, and I am probably going to hack it any way. The second one I'm buying I'm going to take out of case and mount it permanently as mp3 stereo w/ touchscreen in my car..this is like a perfect hacking machine and it has external ide port thaz sooo cool : ) and the HPs cost about $300 used while these are new =)...

I agree about the HP800CT Omnibook. I picked one up pretty cheap. Has 4.3gb hdd,48 megs ram,Win98se and MS Office,Very Bright Active matrix screen. 2 batteries, 2 chargers. Pcmcia USB and Modem, Nice carry case all for about the same price. Very nice machine!
The reviews for the metrobook (linked above) did not impress me to much. Especially the complaints with the touchscreen.

Yeah, but with the OmniBook (I have a 600), you have to deal with that dorky popout mouse. Anyway, while it's definitely not old school like these guys, Sony's releasing a thin and light for under $1K! 00 MHz Celeron.

I got mine today and was able to get BeOS 5.0 pro to load up with no problem. It was the same drive I had on a I-Opener that I was using for awhile. Didn't have to do anything at all but plug the drive and memory into it and away it went. Might be an alternative to using MicroSloth on it for those that would like to try something different. I'm still looking for a touchscreen driver (only drawback a this time) to enable the use of it, but its runs very stable. Nice little setup Scarface. Thanks again for the group buy...

I am having a slight problem getting the touchscreen to function. I have installed the latest driver from Gigatechs site (1.31) The install goes fine with no errors, I reboot and then the dispatch program comes up and it seems like I am able to calibrate, but still no touch screen. I checked the numbers on the top left and bottom right portion of the program and even if I don't touch the screen they seem to change by themsleves. Has anyone else had a problem or do I maybe have one with a bad touch screen? That would really s u c k if I do... Is ther esomething I need to enable or disable in bios??

Thanks

Oh I am running ME at this time until I can come up with a BeOS touch screen driver...

Hmmm, IANAMBO, (i am not a metrobook owner) but I noticed a disclaimer near the bottom of Vik's page that says:

***Windows 2000 Touchscreen NOTE:
After you have installed the touchscreen driver, reboot and just remove the dispatch.exe application from startup folder.

Would this dispatch.exe app be the cause of your issue?? After all, WinMe is really just a hodgepodge of a 32-bit wanna-be.

That was one of the first things I thought about. There isn't anything in the startup folder at this time. So i'm going to try uninstalling it cleaning the registry out of all instances of the dispatch software and try again...

Clueless: I had a similar problem but I don't know if they are related. I had my display set to 640x480 and then installed dispatch. Touchscreen calibrated but didn't work. Try this: Install display driver and set the resolution to 800x600 BEFORE installing dispatch. Then go ahead and calibrate. Also make sure COM1 is enabled in BIOS, and nothing else is trying to use that port, and you don't have any mouse driver installed. If it calibrates correctly then you should have calibration numbers similar to mine: (148, 85) top-left corner, and (959,990)bottom-right corner. Hope this helps.

For others: I will put together another group buy end of next week since I've had a lot of people requesting. If you want to be in on it email me at bsingh@purdue.edu. I've got quite a few people already and looking at a ~thursday purchase and I can ship by sat..

Heres a few stupid questions:

How do you right click with the stylus (especially on the tray icons where you cant use the windows right click button)?

Has anybody gotten the brightness and contrast buttons to work?

Any more ideas on getting the serial mouse to work while the touch screen is also active?

I would love to see some feedback on the Metrobook from the folks that just received them. For those of us that could not participate in the first group buy this would be a tremendous service.

I'm particularly interested in the Metrobook as a "first" laptop for my college bound daughter. The small size is attractive as is the price. I have this reoccuring nightmare of the life of a $1500.00 laptop in a backpack. It's not pretty!

I've hacked several I-openers so I'm ok with the tech side of things. It's those pesky "User" usability issues that bite us IS guys in the butt.

Thanks to all those who are brave enough to be "first group buy" pioneers.

Though I did not participate in the group buy I am happy to share my thoughts.
I purchased my metrobook from Mark West (see Ebay). It came with 128mb of ram and a 10 gig hard drive. I added a linksys 10/100 pcmcia ethernet card to hook into my DSL connection.
I have been very happy with it and am amazed at the perfomance. Disk access is better than I expected and I can play full screen video cd's with no problem (occasional hiccup on full screen high quality Divx).
It is of course very light and portable and very quiet. It does get very hot after prolonged use. Also the external AC adapter is very small too (this is a good thing).
The biggest con is the touch screen. It is not that accurate even with calibration and things like right clicking and click-dragging are very difficult. If you want to add a PS2 mouse you have to connect the bulky floppy drive. Also, as I have mentioned in previous posts, I have had great difficulty getting a serial mouse to coexist with the touch screen.
hope this helps,

I seem to still be having an intermittnet problem with this damn touchscreen... It seems that everytime I try to load an app or a game or something on the notebook something screws with the drivers for the touch screen. I am in the process of trying to get 2000pro loaded on it and hopefully it will take care of some of the random devices 98 kept trying to load drivers for. That unknown device that I get everytime I shutdown and reboot would kill the touchscreen drivers if I let windows try and load a driver for it. If I hit cancel then the touch screen would run... Lets hope Win2000 does better or I may put the thing up for sale... I can't be lugging the floppy drive around to have access to the freakin mouse!!!

I am suprised by the lack of responses about the metrobook. Maybe everyone was like me waiting for their ram and harddrives to come in. I was very pleased with my unit (thanks Vik and thanks for your phone call). Had to load 98 and all seems to be working even for me a new "novice" to setup. I had a few issues but finally got the modem to work. I had the touchscreen not work during one driver that windows was looking for, but once i provided it, all was well. (by the way i too would like to know how to right click with the stylus this would be helpful, although pushing the menu button next to the space bar on the right is not a huge inconvenience and i bet you could map one of the touch "buttons" to the task). I am using a click drive to transfer data from a laptop and am very pleased with this setup. I have ordered a card dock for moving files from other pc's. Battery life doesn't seem too bad and i think the spare along with the car adapter i purchased when i ordered the unit will come in real handy. Can't wait to go wireless though. Please post any deals on the cards and the receiver if you see them.

Mike, Which driver was windows looking for and what did you provide?? I've had the same problem and can only get the touchscreen to function if I tell 98 to cancel the loading of this unknown driver. Only problem is that it keeps trying to load (unless you let it load a driver) everytime it reboots.... I must be missing something on one of the floppies since it keeps saying its an unknown hardware device...

Just Put it all together and I got spin up and no video, Turned out to be a simple thing the video card popped out of its socket seems as if mine was a rush build at the factory. IR window was afloat inside too took five min to reassmble I had a blast for about 4 hrs then the damm touchscreen stopped working in winME as we all have seen, theres got to be a easy way to deal with this other than hooking up a ext mouse hehe. I LOVE IT SO FAR! been playing .asf and divx movies on it and I'm off to Fla tomorrow so I hope someone chimes in -------> today with a touchscreen solution. Yes I still have that unknown??? driver showing up in my device mgr where do you find it???? also here's gigatech's site http://www.gigatech.com.tw/driver6000.htm

I downloaded the original driver from vic's webpage:

############################/metrobook.htm

but running '98 it kept asking for the pctwav.inf file i think ( it was about 1am). I finally did a driver search and went to \pctel.com and downloaded the pct388p driver for 98 (r755s8.zip ). You find the file after going to the "consumers" tab then agree to the use of the driver then scroll down and download. I am pretty sure I uninstalled the modem and had windows find it again. You uninstall the modem through the HSP Modem under "control panel" it has a button that says uninstall. After the driver install The details under device manager show it as v.90 k56Flex HSP PNP Modem. Also lists as File version 7.55. I made sure the com port was com 5, so it didn't interfere with anything. Hope this helps, though i didn't seem to have the trouble with the touchscreen, but the one time.

OK guys, does anyone know what kind of CPU we can upgrade this with? I haven't taken my metrobook apart yet so I don't know what kind on Intel CPU it's running (mobile/desktop), so has anyone here been able to find out. I think if we know what voltage it's running at and the current draw, we might be able to use a K6-2/3/3+ in these. Any thoughts?

I bought one of these units from Vik several weeks ago and it arrived with a cracked case. At first he was willing to try and help me out by getting me another unit. Now he will not respond to my emails. I know that these units are sold "as-is" with no warranty, but he should not have offered to help if he wasn't going to follow through on it. My advice to anyone considering buying one of these units is to find something better to spend your money on. As for dealing with Vik...buyer beware. Just my 2 cents worth.

"Vik"/Scarface won't answer my emails either. I posted here and other places. Before and after he returned from vacation. No response. I even sent him a PayPal "request for payment" for the $30 he owes me from that Norand buy. (I got a smashed unit. Vik said the seller refused to refund my $200 but would give me $30 for my effort.) I'm not going to let this pass. Sure $30 isn't much, but for me it was $200. My $200 Norand was scrap out of the box. That $30 whateveryoucallit is the only good thing to come out of this deal. I will have it, or know the reason why not.

Please email me at air5ab@aol.com. My Purdue email account was blocked because I didn't register for classes for next Fall.. Anyways, justaguyinky, I talked to the guy that sold the units and he refuses to exchange. I thought about what you asked to switch unit with one of the ones from second group buy, but I think that would be wrong since someone else would receive that unit.. Also all units are depleted so there are none left to buy anymore anyway--Apparently some insurance company bought all 90+ units. El_Kabong (medic): I sincerely apologize to you since I totally forgot to email you the money.. email me at air5ab@aol.com since I don't have your email address.

In other news I've discovered mine takes 12gb HD! I think you need BIOS 1.18USA or greater though. I don't know how to make a copy of the BIOS so I can post it.. If someone helps those of you that need large hd support can flash yours.

Vik,
Sorry to hear you lost your email account. Your original offer to help was: "I do have two units of my own though, but I have used both for ~3 weeks. If you would like to swap for them you're welcome.". You suggested swapping with another buyer, not me. I agree that would not be fair. To be fair Scarface/Vik did send me the $30 today, using his sisters PayPal account. No idea why things went sideways as they did. I do know he won't get my business in the future.

MD, going to have some soda and count my 30 big dollars.

I too received an SLT with a cracked case. Same response from Vik as other purchasers. BUT had I listened to peers I would not have purchased from Vik initially. He seems to follow same patterns and other purchasers can validate. The "deal" for the group buy is actually higher than purchasing directly from source on EBay. Check for yourselves by doing a completed item search. A solution I have thought about is disputing the charge (Paypal-Visa) until issues are resolved. To remind all it was stated as "The guy has 50+ brand NEW units in original boxes". A cracked case is a valid argument to dispute a CC charge.

If you want an excellent source of the Metrobooks contact Mark West. He has sold several on Ebay and seems to be a reputable, responsible seller.

Has anyone found a DVD drive that can be connect to the "external ide" connector on the floppy drive?

For those of you that wanted a copy of the image for the Metrobook, I am still waiting for the disc to show up via snailmail. Vik said he sent it out late last week, but it hasn't showed yet. Just reply to the email attached to my profile if you want a copy and i'll make a disc and send it out. AS long as you have avalid license for 95osr2 that is...
