looking for small console server

New Messagelooking for small console server (modified 0 times) ughhgu

I need to place a small console server at a remote site. I have a network device that can only be managed through the console port. So I need something that has ethernet in and a serial port for consoling back out. The only things I've found have 16+ ports. I only need one. I need it to be cheap. Oh yeah...I need it to accept -48v for power. And be rackmountable. I can probably live without the last two. I'm even open to assembling this from pieces as long as it's not something like "take that old 386 you have in the closet and..." Thanks guys!

Heres a guy selling a rack-mountable 386 on ebay...

So basically you can "take that old 386 you bought on Ebay and..."

Or, you could actually use something designed to do this job, and it wouldn't really cost you much more: BayTech makes some pretty good stuff for both remote access and remote power control. You can reach them at http://www.baytech.NET (Note that baytech.COM is wrong.)

A box to do just remote access will set you back about $250, or a somewhat more if you want some more ports or advanced features (modem cards, PPP, add'l interface cards, etc.) The DS series does the terminal server console access only, the RPC series are remote power controllers, and the DS-RPC series put both functions in one box. If you need more than a couple of ports, it's hard to beat their prices even by rolling your own, so check them out.
