The unit shown on the left looks similar to the original version of the Cidco mailstation. That one turned out to have a proprietary system-on-a-chip CPU which wasn't worth hacking. They were available on closeout for <$100.

far as I can tell (and I haven't seen one irl yet) they run VxWorks RTOS. Apps are writtin Java. Therefore the processor is Motorola (ColdFire, PPC, 68000, MCore) but not sure which. Far as I know there is some s/w on them written specifically for a customer (who obviously doesn't want them now) so I guess that leaves many possibilities...
