It's the cable that goes from the controller board to the screen in a mobile LCD screen assembly.

What does it look like? Is it single-row or double-row? Does it look like
a half-size IDE cable? And the spacings between the pins match with the
standard IDE cables? If so, you should be able to find some other brand at
Digikey. Look at the category IDC, then search for 20-pin, 18" size (no 14"
probably), etc.

Sorry - I guess IDC is not the correct description... The cable itself is paper-thin, and flexible like foil, with only a thin, white (PVC?) coating over the wire traces. Still need help with this, please :]

I didn't see any sales info, but perhaps they can lead you to something useful if you email them. Also, do a search for "Flexible Flat Cable" on your favorite search engine. There are many manufactures of this cable, you just need number of wires, pitch, voltage requirements, tempature and most can give you a cross reference.

This type of cable is also referred to as "flat flex cable." Like kNiTe_oWl stated, determine pitch, conductors, etc. and check digikey, etc.

what company made the device this ribbon cable goes in?

did you try getting a cable from them?

it may be a custom-built cable made only for the device it was used in.

unless you know which conductor goes from which pin on one end to which pin on the other, you could damage your device.

example: on the i-o, pin one on the display connector on the main board does not go to pin one on the display.

recommend you be careful.

Ok, I'm going to try a different route, here... I STILL NEED INPUT, PLEASE ...

Can anybody suggest some kind of chemical (solvent, etc, please be specific) that will strip away (melt) the pvc coating on wire, but leave the wire traces inside still intact? I'm considering this route to try and repair, instead of replace.

Again, TIA for all your input.
Sincerely,
~m

HEAT. a Soldering Pencil, Adjustable Temp is better.
You could have some luck with a cig Lighter. Practice on Something else First.
Use a pocket knife to scrape away insulation.
Then Use Flux, Tin your ends, & either overlap Slice or use Bare WireWarp wire on one side or both.

Good Luck ! * StarFish *
