Sony eVilla: Weirdest ISP

I grabbed one of the Sony eVillas on ubid for $200 before the seller remembered to put a reserve price on it. For an IA it's nice (not at $500). Great display.

But get this. The eVilla ISP (by Earthlink) is mandatory. But the ISP can NOT be used on a computer or any other IA. This was confirmed by eVilla/Earthlink tech support.

I also tried configuring a Win98 and WebPlayer wth every possible combo. I made sure I chose an eVilla username that was not taken as an Earthlink username. Everytime it said my password was wrong.

So I called eV/ELN customer service to cancel my acct. I was told no cancellations on eVillas were done over the phone; you had to use the eVilla.

Sure enough, there was a Cancel Acct option in the Settings page, which yielded an error message on 15 tries.

I called eV/ELN tech support and was told there was a software bug; when I asked when it would be fixed I was told that was Sony's business and they didn't know.

I called eV/ELN customer service back and explained all this and was told that they had strict instructions not to cancel eVilla accts over the phone under any circumstances whatsover.

Incidentally, those three phone calls took two and a half hours of mostly waiting in queue.

Somewhat off topic, but amusing. Any know of any other ISP that can be used on one and only one device? The only one I can think of is WebTV's, but you have the option of using other ISPs with WebTV.

Sounds like you are being mighty good-natured about it Robert. Must be from getting such "a good deal" (or is it...).

Let us know how this ends, but in particular we wanna know if you are able to hack-into this thing!
