I don't know if this was mentioned before but linuxdevices.com has an article on AbsoluteValue Systems who have added support for USB WLAN adapters.

http://linuxdevices.com/news/NS6943126672.html

I quickly looked at http://www.linux-wlan.org/index.html to see more info but haven't found USB support in flashing lights. I guess I will have to download the tar ball.

I am extremely interested in finding out what you discover.

Thanks for the work.

I have dowloaded linux-wlan-ng-0.1.11-usbonly.tgz from this site for kernel 2.4.3, you need to enable netlink_dev in the kernel, it's an
option that's usually not enabled so you are going to need to recompile. I just did that today. The box I am compiling it for is an MZ-104
embedded controller from TRI-M systems. I't's not a fast board.. but then again it's an embeeded controller for my Linux based robot projects.
I put the kernel compiling. .. maybe I will start compiling code on my standard machine instead of compiling on the target.
The code did compile clean, when I loaded the modules I had the unresolved externels do to netlink, I'm pretty sure the newly compiled kernel
will fix this.
