Terapin Video Disk Recorder $199
Available at Sam's Club

My local Sam's Club had a pile of these today (at least 20) for $199. These have been going for $500. They will record 74 minutes of video on a cdr or cdrw from any video source. I'm trying to think of enough reasons to get one...Fairly decent reviews on it.

Hey ckbone, which Sam's did you go to? I went to the one near my house in the Chicago area and they didn't have any, and didn't even know what I was talking about. Has anyone else seen these anywhere?

I haven't seen any locally either (NW Indiana/NE Illinois)....recording live and limited to 1 CD worth still wouldn't replace capturing on
a PC but the same device using DVD or MPEG2 with a HD, timeshifting and ethernet would be nicer (know the home DVD units are starting to
sell in Asia but cost is still at 800-1500 or a nice home DAT unit (heard Sony has one) would be good...

I got one today.....Crestwood, Missouri. Sam's Club 4741. The number on the receipt is 446170 TX0002USC.

http://www.terapintech.com/

I'll try it tonight and report back....Comes with all cables, good manual etc. FWIW....They had at least 15 left today. I didn't check any other Sam's around here. This particular store just opened in January.

OK....unit #2 works just fine. #1 was in a box that showed some impact signs inside....the packing was partially smashed, although the unit looked good.

Made a short video using a 6 hr VHS tape. The resulting video looks good...about like the original tape. Haven't tried all the modes yet. There are many options and settings to try. I tried several different blank disks, and it read them all, 650 and 700mb types. I did try an extra-long disk....850mb from compUSA. It would not read the disk....too bad. I think it's a keeper. Windows Media player plays the file, as does Power DVD, and ATI file player.....probably other players also.

Too bad these things are not available at every Sam's outlet. You could get them on line for a while, but they showed out-of-stock yesterday. My local store still has a pile left.

Currently I copy movies from DTV over to VCD using a Winnov Capture card. I usually copy +/- 10 minutes on either side of the movie, trim it then burn the VCD. With the Terapin's limit of 72 minutes or so what methods are used
to copy a movie (since it's live and not stored anywhere) ....starting to consider buying one....thanks in advance for
any suggestions...

I picked up a couple yesterday. Tonight I put one throught some testing, basically recording short segments from various video sources; DVD, VCR, and Tivo. I used SVideo from the DVD, composite video from the VCR and Tivo, and composite audio from all sources (the Terapin does not allow video when the audio is set to digital from what I could tell). There was noticable pixelation on high action scenes on my 61" projection tv, but overall the quality was acceptable. When I played the segments on my 27" TV, the pixelation was hardly noticable.

Overall, I'm happy with it. My goal was to be able to transfer videos of my kids to VCD with minimal effort, and the Terapin will definitely do that. At $199, you can't go wrong!

Minor irritations for me anyway....You cannot title the finished CD. They all will have the title "TOX_VCD". You cannot title the video clips. Each clip will be titled Music01.dat or Music02.dat, depending on how many clips there are. These files will be in a folder on the cd called "Mpegav". Also, having the extension "dat", means most players, Media plater for example, will not automatically recognize the file as it would if the clip had an "mpeg" extension. This makes for a confusing user experience. Say you send the cd to mom.....she won't be able to click on the files to get them to play. You'll have to supply a set of directions to view the clips...not so good.

I guess the only way to make these cds easily playable is to transfer the clips to your computer, rename each clip (Sue's first birthday.mpg) for instance, name the cd something appropriate, then re-burn it on another cd. If you used cdrw media in the Terapin, you wouldn't be wasting any media, but having to do this makes the whole experience less than ideal. And I thought I was simplifing this whole procedure......

Ok...I found a free player that works really well with the Terapin. Just click on the player and everything is automatic. It requires Windows Media Player 6.0 or later to work, modifies the interface slightly. Pretty neat....just send the player to Mom along with your finished Terapin cd.....

You may want to do a pass over at vcdhelp and grab one of the converion tool to convert the DAT files to a MPG file. They are both MPEG-1 but slightly different. Both will play but the conversion will help. See the left hand side of the page for "Tools"

Most of the VCD I have seen usualy have that xxxx01.dat format. I think its part of the standard set by Philips.

Just for info, to recreate the VCD, does your burnner software have VCD mode? Nero rated as one of the best with Roxio the worst. If you have Nero then you can drop the player into the main directory with a auto run file to auto play.

Have fun with the video! Switch over a year ago to only VCD and the VHS machines have been gathering dust ever since.

Yes you will get blockness on mpeg1 VCD format for high action since the push is for play time over quality. The video is some what equal to a 6 hour VHS tape.

Stopped at Sam's Crestwood, Mo at 6pm central....They have 13 units left. If you live in central Illinois, this is an easy drive. It's about 13 miles or so from the Ill/Mo border. You take interstate 44 west out of st.louis, get off at the Big Bend exit. You're there.

I asked customer service about direct shipment...no go. They suggested you wait till they become available on-line. Hmmmm.

Forgot to add this....Check the thing out at the service desk after you buy it. It's easy and you don't need anything other than the Terapin to check it....Plug it in, put in a blank cd, it comes with 10.......the lcd screen will say "reading", if it's ok, it'll say "blank" and give you a 00:00 time read-out. My first faulty unit would not read....only displayed error 000.

Glad to see a few people managed to find some of these Terapins. Rather than use a large monitor for the copying process, I got a 5.4" LCD monitor from BestBuy. It was designed for a Nintendo Gamecube, but also has inputs for external audio/video devices. Two small speakers under the screen, a fold out stand so it will sit on a flat surface by itself, all the cables and adapters, an AC power supply, a car lighter plug....pretty complete. It'll sit right on top of the Terapin, secured by some velcro. Not the best picture, but it's working fine for editing/burning. $150. This setup will pay for itself in no time.

Finally decided to get a stand-alone DVD player. You have to make certain the model you get will play VCD format disks. Here's two I tried that play all different formats, including Kodak picture cds (they'll play jpeg pictures in a slide show)

Apex AD-1100w.......Walmart $74.
Mintek DVD 2110.....BestBuy $99.

These are similar, made by the same company. There are websites devoted to hacking/modifying these units. I'm keeping the Mintek model...it's very impressive.

It includes free OEM PowerDVD($49)and some blank CDs. They are new units, not refurbs. It is scheduled to arrive the 28th. I just checked their web site and the price is now $282.50. I burned a 74 minute video with the Terapin, fit easily on a 700mb cd.....seemed to have at least 6 minutes left. Tell you what....this was a 20 year old VHS tape recorded at the 2 hour speed using an RCA video camera, state of the art at the time. Playing it on a 35" monitor using the SVHS cable gives a picture difficult to tell from the original tape. If you play the file on a computer(full screen), you can tell it's a VCD file...not bad, but could be better.

I converted the .dat file to an .mpg file using a free program (VCDgear). It only took about a minute to do the conversion. This website is filled with useful stuff.....find this file in the converter catagory.

http://www.vcdhelp.com/vcdtools.htm

I am looking for some specific editing help using the Terapin. I have a Panasonic pro editing deck, two in fact, AG 1970. They are capable of edits down to about 2 frames...very clean starts, cuts, etc. They syncronize with each other for editing. I'm using one deck to play to the Terapin, it can provide a clean start point to the Terapin, but I'd like to find a method to figure an exact start point for the Terapin record.....seems to be about four seconds or so after you confirm a record. I'd like to get it down to something like .5 second....consistantly. Maybe I'm asking too much...

Thanks to the threads above regarding the DVD players, I ordered an Apex AD-500W from Walmart.com for $88. You can put different firmware into the unit that removes the Macrovision copy protection, and supports Region Free DVD's. They also play VCD's (like the Terapin records), SVCD's, MP3, DVD, and a few others.

I already had an ATI All-in-Wonder Radeon that can capture video and store it in VCD format. It's pretty easy to set it for VCD, and supposedly you can make it capture with SVCD settings as well. (VCD is MPEG-1, SVCD is MPEG-2 but you can vary the bitrate to trade off quality to get more minutes on a disc). I know I paid less than $200 for the AIW but I don't remember exactly how much.

The Terapin looks like a pretty cool box, but IMO you can use a capture card like the AIW that gives you more options to create SVCD's with higher quality than VCD, and pick up an inexpensive player like the Apex to play them on. It does require a decent computer to drive the board, though. An I-Opener won't cut it, but 1GHz chips and m/b's are cheap these days if you have to upgrade.

The Apex info site is pretty cool. You can find almost everything about DVD players and hacking activity there. I doubt I'll do any firmware changes to my unit. In the case of my Mintek, I would loose the ability to play Kodak picture cds, and jpegs.... would gain the abitity to function as a region-free unit, plus I could turn off macro-vision.

If you have a Terapin it will record macro-vision encoded DVDs....so I've heard anyway. I haven't tried it....probably wouldn't. There is a big difference between VCD and SVCD. A regular VCD will play ok on a low-power computer, P90 for instance. SVCD (MPEG2) is CPU intensive, requires probably P166 or higher to work well.

In my case I'm trying to use this Terapin to actually make some money. I'm in the process of making a deal with a local sky-diving club to turn all their videotapes into VCDs. Since a lot of these guys have older computers, VCDs should work out just fine. 'Bout time all this computer stuff earned it's keep.

Here's how to get one.

Browse to the location of a store in Sam's Club.
Search for 441670
If they have the item in stock
Call the store. Speak to the manager, plead with the manager to UPS
it out to you.
That's how I got 3 that way. I called my local store and the manager told me how to do it.
Apparently, there's something like a store-transfer that one can initiate from your local store.
Only if both managers are willing.

Hope it helps.

The terapin is GGGGREAT!!

I'm transfering all my VHS to VCD. I use the CD-RW over and over again.
When I have one done right I then copy over to CD-R on my PC.
That way I dont make duds.
For those of you who have not discovered. During recording the circular dots at the bottom of the screen on the player is a VU meter. So adjust the input volume to a desired level. I mostly have it cranked up all the way and back-off a little.

Happy Hunting.
I cannot guarantee it will work for everyone.

Some prices are not very competitive though. I checked on Cat food and a few other things and I can get it frequently on sale for less than they have priced everyday. ~I go through about 100-150 lbs of Cat litter a week so quite a bit of Cat food gets consumed here~

I've been wondering about swapping the internal CD-RW unit with a better brand unit. I am proposing that this would make the Terapin less picky about the CD media. This would allow me to use cheap CDR/RW media for less important things.

I haven't opened up the Terapin since it is still under warranty. I'm guessing that there is an IDE CD-RW unit - not a laptop CD-RW device - since it has a motorized tray eject. It's tempting to open this device.

Comments?

Don't waste your time opening up the Terapin. The drive is not an IDE and does not have standard mounting holes. If you do decide to open it, the oval shaped plugs in the stupid looking top have mounting screws under them. There is one in each corner, snap the plugs out with a pocket knife. Also the ends of the front panel snap in place. Have fun!

My Terapin device is relatively quiet. There is noise but it isn't annoying. I never opened mine up so I can't say if there is a fan or not. I do notice that it gives off a strange slight order after disc is burned. (Wonder if it is the CD literally being burned by laser) Hence, I always shut mine off when not in use.

The previous post mentions that the CDRW is not IDE. I still wonder if the CDRW device can be replaced. One of these days, I will open it up.

One of these days I will get a faster PC and DVD burner. For quick low quality MPEG1/VCD duplication, the Terapin is fine.

I opened my Terapin because the drive is very pickey about disks. I thought maybe there was some dust on the laser lens. Not the problem, just a cheap drive I guess. I think the cable is a flat 15 or 20 conductor, I didn't count. I don't recall seeing a fan. If I remember correctly, there is one main board with a piggyback board plus the front panel boards and a power supply. Didn't take any pictures, sorry.

Lately, my unit is getting picky with the media. Maxell (or Memorex) Black CDR were working with a 99.99% success rate. Lately, it has been getting picky with these media. I have to let the Terapin "warm" up and try several insert/ejects with the media before it can recognize and got to RECORD STANDBY mode.

I had an overheating APEX DVD player which was picky too. After I cleaned lens and cracked open the case to let hot air escape, the unit works better now. I am suspecting that the Terapin can be cured if I clean the lens and drill some vent holes. Maybe I'll add a filter to minimize dust from entering unit. If I have the time, I might try to add a fan for cooling.

Wondering if other Terapin owners had any successes with these cooling tweaks.

Overheating is a fairly commonly known problem with the Terapin, although you can't get tech support to admit it. Mine started to go into recovery mode after about 15 minutes of recording on a regular basis. I fixed this by raising the unit about an inch by putting a couple of styrofoam squares under the unit and then use a small desk fan to circulate air underneath it while recording. It has worked without a glitch since, without drilling any holes.
