Someone help me out. Embedded NT? This is NT server with no GUI? I've never heard of that before. If you plug a monitor into it, what do you see? If I load my own OS on a HD and pop it in, will it boot on it? What would be a typical applicaton for a box like this?

(I guess if I have this many questions, it's not for me

Looks like a capable little system, the ComputerShow website has links to the manufacturer's website and specs. Might be what I have been looking for for a dedicated MP3 player/X10 control system. Hell, for $49 I can't resist....

Be careful ordering from the website. They may have a bug in the checkout system. It seems the info from the last person to place an order is cached for the next person (including credit card info). The next person might be able to "order" something for the previous person (or worse). I would be very cautious about using a credit card. PayPal might be safe since the payment is arranged separately.

Yeah...I made the mistake of ordering from that website before, and I had to cancel my credit card because of it too, because someone had bought approx. $1200 worth of items. Buying with Paypal doesn't sound like it would hurt anything though, since Paypal is secured within it's own site. People will still be able to see your address though, so you might have a few psychos show up at your front door. Hey, at least you got yourself a new little toy!

FYI - NT Embeded, does not mean that is is a NO-GUI NT. MS simply calls any software that they componentize 'Embedded' versions, they also have XP Embedded as well.

petejengkol: Nice find! This thing is definitely worth $50.

bmurphr1: Sorry to hear about your experience. Did computer-show make things right? If not, did the credit card company hold you liable for the charges?

It seems like they would verify the shipping address to the CC billing address and eliminate most of the problems. Better yet, they should just fix their ordering system <g>.

I also noticed that you can change the billing & shipping info then pay with PayPal. The credit card info from an previous purchase is still there. What a messed up system.

Who knows... Those that place orders may end up getting a bunch of "free" stuff. AFAIK, if it is sent to you and you didn't order it, then it's yours. I've had this happen in the past. Sometimes the company will want the item back. I will usually accommodate them. In this case, I have insist that they send a carrier to pick up the item with a call-tag (i.e. prepaid return shipping). This way you don't have to worry about getting a refund for return shipping costs.

I just ordered one from these guys and received confirmation for two more orders afterwords. Upon checking back here, I see I am not alone. Fortunately, I opted for Paypal, which IS a nice touch to have for an online business.

Let's keep eachother informed here on how we fare with getting our systems and cancelling erroneous orders.

A messed up order system for sure! I must have been there to order right after GLITCH. His name and address were right there! (BTW I'll be over for dinner on Sun) Ha Ha. Seems like PayPal is the only way to go. It looks like I could have changed the shipping addy and left the billing addy and type as the previous person. If they had used a CC it'd be all free from there.

Hi,

A few questions for the first one who cracks one of these open:

1. What is the NIC (Ethernet) chip? Make and number?

2. Is the Flash ROM chip soldered in place, or is there a socket it is in?

3. How big is the DOC (DiskOnChip)? And is it socketed? If you don't know how big please state the M-xxxx number on top of it.

Thanks!

I'm pretty sure the only reason you guys are "seeing" other customers is because you are using the same link to go to the site.

[ CartId=5086571ONFXC77&Cc=SYS05 ]

Most reputable sites would also use a cookie along with a url cartid. Also, most sites would have the cart time-out after a bit of inactivity.

I went in through http://www.computer-show.com, searched for netier, checked out, and did not see any one else's info.

YMMV

The problem with ordering is apparently because the link above contains a shopping cart id. Everybody keeps trying to put them in the same cart. If you go to http://www.computer-show.com and select computers -> thin clients you'll find the machine. I can't seem to create a link without a cart id.

For technical information, there's a link on the page for this machine that will take you to the manufacturer's documentation: http://www.computer-show.com/drivers/systems/Netier.htm

You can get the hardware manual:

http://www.computer-show.com/drivers/systems/user%20guides/NXXLadmin.pdf

I'm not entirely clear on which options are included in the computer-show machines.

I ended up calling computer-show.com directly (760-325-6495). I suspected that my order was FUBAR. The (very nice) sales guy confirmed it. It would be a good idea to do the same if you placed an order this morning. I'm guessing that my order and at least 10 others will be canceled based on my phone call. They would have been shipped/charged to some other unsuspecting person. In the case of using PayPal, the orders may be shipped to the wrong address.

inx3us: Be sure to call first if you stop by (and bring beer). We don't answer the door if we don't recognize the person. It really frustrates the solicitors when they know someone is home and no one answers the door .

Thankfully my situation wasn't too terrible. Mastercard charged me 50 bucks so they wouldn't bill me the 1200 bucks worth of stuff, but I talked to the head manager of computer-show.com and he sincerely apologized and offered me 250 bucks of instore credit, so I quit my ranting and accepted the bribe. He also assured me the webmaster would have the problem fixed within a day or two. BTW, my order was placed on 3/1, so the glitch has been in the system ever since. Caveat emptor.

P.S. I have enough money now for 5 thin clients....I bet they'd look pretty cute standing beside one another.

I purchased one of these on eBay a few months ago. I will post some internal pics as soon as I get a chance.

a few things to note...

44pin laptop HD header
Nice internal bracket to attatch 9.5" or thicker HD to.
I think I remeber a single ISA slot
DOC chip (MD2201-D72) 72MB I think

I have an AMD K62 500 running in mine, bumped it up via jumper settings.
I cannot seem to find my notes on that. I will post that info as well.

You will have to install a lasanga fan to cool it.

There are some passwors you will need, The seller gave them to me.....

default network login:

user: skinnynt
password: password

windows setting password: netx
bios password: fireport

I hope this info helps, These are VERY cool machines for the price....

Still have a few K62+ chips that should hopefully work with this from my iO buys. Hmmm, now where to put that iNet box that I was going to use for that purpose....

I just thought of another couple of things of note....

The XL-1000 comes with
There is a connector on the Motherboard for an Internal Floppy (26pin I think)
It requires a proprietary flat ribbon connector for hookup, and of course a Notebook Floppy.
Unit had a 300hmz AMD processor standard, so many won't need to upgrade it....

Enjoy...

These look great... I have a few questions to folks who have gotten them:

If they have a laptop mini-44pin header, can they boot 'anything' off them? I'm looking at these for a diskless client in a business environment, so I need to know if I can just say "Boot an image off *points* that tftp server", or is there flashram in it that I can configure for something else? I have absolutely no interest in running anything even remotely Microsoft on these.

Second - anyone have a line on cheap small flatscreen monitors? I'm using iopeners now (about a dozen of them). Monitors for $100 or less in a frame, vga 800x600 or 1024x768 would be spiffy.

Yes, the proprietary cable is for an internal Notebook floppy. I have the floppy, but no appropriate cable. You would also require the pin-out.

44pin IDE Header onboard, Yes....

Re:shayde

These units (Un-Modified) are diskless workstations, running Embedded WinNT. In there current configuration you would need to use a program called Rappaport to re-configure them to work with your network. I am getting this second hand, and I have'nt done it myself. Here is a link to the rappaport website for more info.
http://www.wyse.com/products/software/rapport3.htm

But for those of use wanting WinBlows, or better still, Linux treat it like an I-Opener install. As far as the DOC chip, I suppose you could install Win98Lite, or create a Disk Image, and flash the Chip.

Got mine today. Just finished testing to make sure it was working correctly. So far, I am using it to write this. As a web station, it works just fine. I was kinda disappointed on the boot time, but then again, it is WinNT so I guess it is expected. Just had higher expectation since it was booting from a DOC. Anyway, this thing is silent, there is no moving parts at all. Just a big heatsink on the CPU. And just for those of you that are wondering, upon first boot up, it shows "House 2 Home" as the wallpaper. Guess where these came from ;) Anyway, login into the setting and made all the changes needed, changed the wallpaper and the thing makes a great web terminal. I might just keep it exactly as is for now. It is NT4+SP5 with IE5. The DOC is 72Meg, partition as 2 partitions. The first one is used for the OS, and it is compressed, might also explain the slowness. The second partition is about 1 Meg and is labeled DATA. All creation of client connection info is stored on this second partition. There is a RAM drive that is 4 Meg in size. This is used to store the Temporary Internet Files.

These do NOT have the hardware for the CF installed. There is a removable plate in the back, but nothing inside. Doesn't mean it can't be added, but just not installed by default.

I will probablly keep one the way it is and install Linux on the other one to test. 72 Megs is a good size for Linux :)

If I missed anything, just let me know and I will add the info.

I can map from XP share folder and samba . and put some files to a directory on my linux file-server(samba, and NFS) for XL-1000. run any program through network. and the heat from processor is fair enough.
I upgraded to K6-2 400MHZ with FSB 100 MHZ and 4X multiplier, for the testing, I'm running IE for browsing, and winamp for playing mp3. no interruption or choking....
this is a real PC though, mean a thin PC.
Thinking to install free xserver for windows (I have old mix twm xserver, that's free).
and we can set display res to 1024X768 with 85Hz res.. pretty good ..

Got mine yesterday, quite a little deal for the price. It came with the Netier keyboard and a new MS Intellipoint Scroll Mouse, nice touch. There was a small bend in the rear of the case, easily straightened out. Hooked up a drive no problemo, just to load stuff for now. I'm toying with the idea of putting 98Lite on the DOC along with a stripped version of Winamp, a browser and the drivers to hook it to my HomeRF network. I don't think I can get HomeSeer (X-10 control program) stripped enough to fit on the DOC, so may have to put in a permanent HD or find a smaller home automation program. Anyone else running X-10, let me know what you use....

I'm posting from my Netier. The silence of the machine is almost spooky. I think that I can get used to this .

The speed doesn't seem too bad for web surfing (even with the K6-2-300). I can't wait to put a faster CPU in it. A new OS load will also be nice. I need Opera and wheel mouse support. I plan on loading Win98 on this (with the goodies) and pare it down with Win98lite. I hope it can be made small enough to fit on the DOC.

BTW, you can disable Network Booting in the BIOS to speed up the boot time a bit.

I've never tried Win98lite before so I can't give you any advice on that right now. I like the Netier enough to send it to the top of my computer TODO list. Hopefully I can get something running this weekend. I know that others on this board have already made Win98lite installs for the Webplayers. There are probably instructions in that forum. The webplayer distribution fits on a 48MB DOC. I'm pretty confident that a nice software set will fit on the 72MB Netier DOC.

I plan on using a laptop CDROM to do the install to a laptop harddrive. A 44-to-40 pin adapter and a regular CDROM and harddrive could also be used. I'll install the software and then pare it down to 72MB. The culling process will be a combination of uninstalling components and deleting what is not necessary to run. Win98lite (the program), TweakUI and other programs are useful for this. The rest will be trial and error. I will use DriveImage (or Ghost) to make incremental backups. A multiboot arrangement (SystemCommander) will help streamline the backup process. Once I get the image to where I want it to be I'll move it to the DOC. At least that's my plan .

PeteC:

IDE cable specs:
Total cable length: 10" to 18"
Length between controller and first drive: 5" to 12"
Length between drives: 5" to 6"

I've pushed this spec on both the long and short lengths. I've sucessfully used cables as short as 1.5" and as long as 24". I've had problems with out-of-spec long cables. I've never had problems with out-of-spec short cables. Maybe I've just been lucky. YMMV.

I have been able to get the Win98lite (micro) running on the Netier's DOC. It seems to boot faster than the embeddedNT. I still need to get the stopwatch and time it. There is still about 30MB left for programs/files (or 60MB compressed). This will be plenty for what I want it to do.

The only problem with running from the DOC is that it runs in compatibility mode. I think that this keeps the system from suspending properly. The machine will suspend properly when a hard drive is used (& DOC disabled).

epodfreak: Yes, I've also been playing with the NT-150 and I use the same nym in the stbhackers forum.

dawson: The $59 price increase happened the day after the deal was reported here. The company actually seemed to be paying attention. They sold over half of their stock of these in one day. I think that most companies wouldn't have noticed that demand was exceeding supply until it was too late.

The significant thing is that they are almost sold out (only 10 in stock today). I think the first wave is over (i.e. those who jump first and think later). The second wave will be short (i.e. those who wait to see if they are useful before they buy one). IMHO, the third wave will start soon (i.e. the machine is proved useful and you'll have to pay top dollar on eBay if you want one). I also think that the fourth wave will happen sooner than machines like the i-Opener & ePods (i.e. the novelty of the machine wears off and people sell them cheap on eBay). Of course, a bunch more of these could come off lease and disrupt the whole process <g>.

Got the first one up and running with a 2GB laptop drive and 98SE, gonna have to do the HD if I want to use it for home automation along with streaming audio in the entertainment center. Dropped a K6-III+/450 in it this morning and am running about 145F with the case off and no active cooling. Installed a Symphony HomeRF USB adapter and it's streaming off the network now. Cycling SiSoft Sandra Burn-In on the CPU and memory for 50 loops in 'high stress' mode to see if she'll hold up (I need more power Scotty!). If it holds, I'll button it up and see how much hotter it gets closed in. Running this thing at 450MHz without a fan would be sweeeet. Guess I'll start looking for a VGA to S-Video converter to hook up to the TV....

I was using an EasyNow for my HS box until I switched over to an INet from MicroCenter. I was running 98 on the EasyNow and had stability problems - something started to eat memory at a rapid rate if I left it on for more than a day or two. I switched to XP Home on the INet and it's much more stable. Anyway...

I've been using a RocketPort USB Serial from Comtrol. It's a box with 4 serial ports. I had no problems getting it up and running with my EasyNow under 98. I've had some problems under XP, however. I haven't determined whether they're caused by XP (beta drivers), not enough power from the port, etc. It will run for days with no problem and then just stop (and the LED on my MR26 goes out). Sometimes it will only run for an hour. After a reboot, everything is fine. I didn't have any of these problems running on the other two machines I have used it with (both 98, neither running for more than a day or two without reboot).

Pete,

Depending on where you look the max temp for the K6-III+ is listed at either 145F or 165F. When I put the case back on I'm pretty sure I'll be tapping on the 165F side, and this is from wherever the mobo monitors the temp, not the CPU itself. I'm thinking of lapping the top of the CPU and bottom of heatsink, and using Artic Silver instead of the cheapo silicone grease that I currently have. I'm also going to load CPUIdle and see how much it helps. I reeealy don't want to drop a fan in this thing if I can avoid it. If not, about the only thing that will fit is a Lasagna. I don't know if the 12v Lasagna will run on 7v, but that would bring the noise way down....

Just got mine today. Found that all the passwords as posted here were the same except for the bios password. I could not find Jumper 24 to reset the CMOS as listed in the Admin PDF , so I removed the battery for about a minute and got in without a password.

One caveat, I had a spare 64MB-PC100 Dimm and it works, but its has 8 chips vertically oriented on the Dimm board and its too tall. It is 1-3/8" high, while the original Dimm is only 3/4" high with 4 chips horizontal. So be careful when odering memory upgrades.

I noted on the NT desktop a small selection rectangle in the center of the screen. Turns out to be "My Computer" with a space for a name and no icon.

J24 is under the metal frame near the battery. My bios password was different too but j24 took care of that. This box is going to work perfectly for me as a NAS (network attached storage) server. If I get energetic I might even put it in a different box so I can include a floppy and cdrom, wish someone was unloading the xl-2000 model with these already attached. I replaced a loud machine running as my NAT, NAS and print server as well as an access point with a SIEMENS Speedstream that does almost all of this in 1/10 the space and no noise so now I am spoiled. Just needed something for storage and the occasional cdrom access (mostly small laptop and pen based systems on the wireless lan) and this fits the bill perfectly.

stretch: I put 98lite (micro) on the Netier by first adding a hard drive and CDROM. The hard drive provides a place to set up the OS which is free from space restrictions. The CDROM allows a Win98 CD to be booted to a shell prompt and makes it easy to transfer files. The CDROM is not needed after networking is running. Once the OS was mostly setup, I compressed it using Ghost and transfered it to the DOC. The hard drive can be removed after the DOC is running. Every so often I reinstall the hard drive and use Ghost to backup the DOC.

I very close to having the system tweaked to just the way I want it. I've spent more time building custom startup/shutdown screens than I did to get the rest up and running. I still need to setup an RAMDISK for webpage caching and such. Once I get the first machine perfect, I'll ghost the DOC and load the image on my other Netiers.

Rapport.exe is on the workstation, but it is only the workstation piece. You will still need the server part to do any management. I got the trial version to work and it is not too bad. Except for the installation process, it needs all sorts of requirements. Once installed, you will need to upgrade the workstaion with the update before any of the changes will take effect. Everything is done with scripts, adding icons to the desktop. Adding programs, removing programs. They give some examples. As I read through the help files, it seems that if you want anything major, you still need to contract out to get the scripts created.

On a side note, I have been able to use the Rapport software to remote boot my workstations to DOS with network drivers so that I can run the DOC software on it to upgrade it. Next is to downgrade the CPU to a P75 or something else, maybe a Rise chip (looking for a low power/heat device) and install a Linux kernel with DOC support to put on it for use as a Firewall/Router.

Sniff: I'm guessing that you don't have enough rights to make any significant changes. I'm going to try resetting the password using Winternal Locksmith and see if this gets me further with the internal software.

FYI, my 98lite machine is working great. The 98lite seems to be the path of least resistance to get these up and running quickly. I eventually want to convert these back to true thin clients. I'm not sure if a management system like Rapport is really necessry for a home network. It seems like overkill if you have less than 10 clients. However, it does look like something that would be fun to learn about. I didn't get the link for the 30-day trial software. I did sign up to get the 3.02 upgrade software. Palm makes a USB to serial adapter that I have used on the iOpener, I think it was about $15. You can find them on eBay also, but just as cheap to buy local after you figure the shiiping costs and hassle of bidding....

How can I get power to my laptop hard drive? I have a 44-pin IDE cable, but that doesn't run power to the drive like I'd hoped. I see something next to the IDE header that looks like a power take-off, but I don't want to fry my netier by hooking up the wrong things. Can anyone point me in the right direction?

Jester,

Check your cable orientation, sometimes the keying on the connectors is reversed from what it should be. I'm running my latop drive off of the cable no problem. Other power is available from CN5, the large white Molex connector that attaches to the mobo from the external power supply connector. The two reds on the left are +5, the yellow is +12. That's where I'm pulling the 7v to run a 12v fan at a quiet level. You can find the hardware manual at http://www.wyse.com/serviceandsupport/netier/support/pdfs/NXXLadmin.pdf

Jester, epodfreak: I am willing to upload my DOC image, but I don't have a good place to put it. In the past I've used Yahoo briefcases. This wouldn't work very well for this image. It is about 70MB. A yahoo briefcase holds 30MB. Does anyone with the space/bandwidth want to volunteer to host the image?

Jester: A laptop hard drive will get power from the 44-pin cable. It the hard drive doesn't spin up it is usually because the cable is not plugged in correctly. It may be off by a pin or reversed. Pin1 on the IDE connector on the motherboard is closest to the DOC.

I tried using the cable in both orientations, but I'll try again tonight. I pulled my HDD out of an old IBM laptop, so the drive is inside a little carriage. I took it out of the carriage, and it looks like a normal IDE connector on the HDD except that there are 4 additional pins off to the side of the IDE connector. The IDE to proprietary IBM connector has 50 holes, which allows it to interface with these additional pins. I'm starting to think those extra pins are jumper pins, and the proprietary cable allows the laptop to adjust the jumper settings to allow for the hot-swappable CDROM drive. I plan to look up the HDD model and check this out later too. I'll keep you all posted.

Thanks for the help and support - you're a cool bunch of guys in my book.

You got it, the four extra pins are the master/slave/cable select pins. Some systems connect to them for automatic settings. Also I had one old IBM drive that had to have a jumper when used in anything but the IBM it came from. You can go to IBM and look up the jumpers and specs for most of their old drives.

glitch and friends-
Now that I have glitch's 98lite image (thanks Car9c1), my plan is this: load NTFSDOS, ghost, and Glitch's image onto a harddrive. Boot to NTFSDOS and gain access to the DOC. Ghost the original NT DOC image onto the harddrive for safety, and format the DOC. ghost Glitch's image onto the DOC and reboot. Set the BIOS to boot to the DOC.

I also plan to experiment with moving the swapfile to the physical harddisk. Another idea is to add another 64MB RAM, make a 64MB RAMdisk, and move the swapfile to the RAMdisk. Any comments on any of this?

Does Disk On Chip wear out after a few million writes, like other types of solid-state storage? If so, we'll want to keep the swapfile off the DOC, right? Just another 2 cents.

Keep up the good work, fellas!

Three questions:

1) Where do you find the really skinny dimm's to add memory. I have a bunch of memory including some old 32 and 64MB dimms. The ones with the 8 chips vertically mounted don't work, as mentioned above. I have a couple with 4 chips mounted horizontally and they are about 1/4" too high.

2) What's the fastes K2 processor you can use with the existing heatsink. I really don't want to put a fan in this guy.

3) I didn't see an option to boot from a USB drive so I guess I'm going to have to get a 44 to 40 pin adapter to boot from a normal CD-ROM to install Windows onto a spare laptop drive I have. Where do you buy those?

Jester: You don't need NTFSDOS to work with ghost images of NTFS partitions. You would only need it if you want to access the content of the partition from DOS.

A swap file doesn't make any sense for a machine like this. "Disk" resources are more scarce than memory resources. The space on the DOC is too precious to use for swapping. The 98lite image has the swap file disabled.

Setting up a RAMDISK for swapping seems like a good idea until you sit down and think it through. The swap file is there to make the machine act like it has more memory than it really has. This swap is usually accessed when the machine is running out of memory. The system moves data from memory to hard drive, thus freeing memory for other applications. By setting up a RAMDISK swap file you would be moving data from memory to memory. You would be better off just letting the system use all the memory (i.e. no RAMDISK swapfile) and save the overhead of the RAMDISK and swapping.

The DOC has a limited number of writes, but this number is in the millions. It would take quite a while to wear it out if you tried, but why take the risk. The 98lite image is set up with a 4MB RAMDISK (I:). This may be useful for caching browser pages/images. Opera can be set up to only cache pages/images to RAM. In this case the RAMDISK is not needed. It has been a while since I've used IE & Netscape. I'm not sure if they can be configured in a similar manner.

You make an excellent point. I was thinking Windows98 required a swapfile...duh! either way, I plan on keeping the harddrive in place for MP3s and applications and stuff. That being the case, would it be wise to reenable the swap file and stick in on the harddrive or just leave it turned off? Also, how long is it taking your netier to boot up? Is the DOC still compressed? How loud is a lasagna cooling fan? Would a peltier be a better choice?

Jester: I wouldn't recommend the 98lite-micro image of you are going to use a hard drive. The micro build leaves out a lot of things that you take for granted in a desktop OS. You would be better off with a more conventional load of an OS if you have the space. The 98lite-micro (and other embedded OS's) only make sense if you need the small footprint to fit them on the DOC.

I was just discussing the peltier option with someone else offline. I'll just cut & paste my thought from that discussion here....

The peltier wouldn't work well in the Netier. The problem with the machine is finding a good (silent) way of dumping the heat from the CPU. A peltier can only keep the CPU side cool if the heat sink side can be kept cool. It is best to think of peltiers in terms of temperature differences (deltaT) than as a "cooling device". With a peltier you have to be able to dump all of the heat load from the CPU PLUS all the heat load generated to drive the deltaT. If you can't dump the heat from the hot side, then the cold side can't get cold. This is why you see most peltier systems with very large heatsinks or liquid coolers.

What the Netier really needs is a heatpipe. These are really neat devices. If you do a bit of web searching you will find a better explanation of how they work than I can provide. The problem with heatpipes is that they are usually custom configured for an OEM system. I haven’t found any sources for generic heatpipes, but it has been some time since I looked. I know one heaksink manufacture that is using the heatpipe concept in their product, but I don't think that it would package in the Netier.

Heat is going to be the biggest problem with going fast on the Netier. I'm not sure if there is a practical solution that doesn't involve a fan.

I'm not sure if it will provide enough cooling to run a K6-3-450 at 600 with the cover on. But it will be more effective than the stock cooling.

I just thought of another solution using a HSF...

I tried mounting a Alpha PAL153U on Netier. The HSF just clears all of the capacitors around the CPU socket. One could install the heatsink, slide on the cover and then attach the fan. Of course, you would have to cut a hole in the side of the case for the fan <g>. The fan would extend about 5mm from the side of the case. The provided fan will start at 9v and is fairly quiet at that voltage. This setup will likely provide enough cooling to run the K6-3-450 at 600.

With a fancy fan grill this wouldn't look too bad.

I'm going to experiment with a variety of OS loads on this box. My friend and I are planning to try 98micro, linux, QNX, and possibly others using alternately the DOC and the HDD as boot drives. Personally, I'm just looking for something small and fast that boots up quickly and has some of the features of Win98. I would like USB, Winamp, a browser, and a few other apps. I was looking into 98micro because it is supposed to boot quickly. I'll keep the OS on whichever IDE device gives me the shortest boot time, and keep the software and data on the HDD for sure. Eventually, I'd like to install this box in my car and run MP3s off it as well as GPS and webcam. I'll need USB support for the GPS , the webcam, and the 802.11 when I get them.

Once again, I gotta thank you for your quick replies to my posts. I can't wait to get some time this weekend to play with this 'puter.

I haven't had a chance to try imaging the Netier yet, but you should be able to load DOS, ghost.exe, and the image file onto a harddrive, boot to the harddrive, and then just run ghost.exe to dump the image file onto the DOC.

That sound about right, Glitch?

car9c1: I use the ghost.exe from a DOS prompt on a external hard drive. Select "disk from image" and transfer the image to the DOC. Afterwards, the partition on the DOC needs to be marked "active" (using Partition Magic) so it will boot. At this time I also resize the partition to use the whole DOC. I don't understand why Ghost doesn't use the whole DOC. Its easy enough to change with PM that it doesn't bother me. Power down & remove the hard drive. Power up, then configure the BIOS so it doesn't look for the hard drive anymore. On the next boot you should be running from the DOC.

If you don't have PM it is a bit trickier. I don't think that FDISK will set a partition active that is not on the C: drive. In this case, remove the hard drive, add a CDROM and boot from a CDROM that has FDISK on it. The DOC should be C: now and FDISK should work.

I'm sure that there are many other ways of doing this. I'm guessing that eventually someone will come up with a way of reimaging the DOC from the network with readily available tools. Until then, the hard drive method will have to do.

Just a tip for backing up netier windows NT or any kind from DOC:

msys has a utility for reading the whole image from DOC and dumpping to a file.
you don't need norton ghost.

for how long the DOC can sustain of reading/writing: I read the DOC 2000 tech PDF file, it states that will sustain millions of writing. Comparing with Compact Flash or Multimedia Flash with DOC 2000, the DOC is much better in life time.

I have webplayers , installed with Linux (starting from scartch to build the small Linux Filesystem)and has set swap file in the DOC (around 4MB swap file), and still using right now. The DOC doesn't show any wears.

In win98, better disable swap file, cause if wins senses a low memory, it will use swap file, and it really slow down the system, if the swap file is small.
In original XL-1000 windowsNT embedded, there is no swapfile, only has one small partion for storing inf/configuration, and virtual disk (for caching temp file) :) as I know and read from somebody posting in this thread :)).

so far that I know guys....

Peace
Pete

I don't know if anybody has tried this, but I was able to get WinAmp to install on this thing with the default House2Home set up.

First you need to configure your network settings so you can use your browser.

Second, fire up the browser to http://www.winamp.com and download the LITE version and DO NOT SAVE TO DISK. You want to select "run this program from it's current location".

This will launch the installer.

Once finished, winamp is installed and accessable from the START menu.

NOTE: Until someone can figure out how to get the default HOUSE2HOME settup to map drives, there is NO way this can play files directly. It can only be used for streaming. Also, it tosses up an error every time winamp is run, but it still works.

you seem to know the most about the DOC so far. I heard that it was compressed...is there any way to decompress it? I'm sure it would hold less that way, but it may run faster. Just an idea.
My friend and I played with our netiers for several hours last night, with some success. We were finally able to get the hard drive to show up as primary slave and attempt to boot, but the Win95 image was just screwed up. We were not able to get an image onto the drive yet, because my laptop is too old (IBM 755CD) and we were unable to get it to boot onto the network. I've got the harddrives here at work now, and should have no trouble imaging them with Glitch's 98lite image using a more modern laptop. From there, it should be easy to get the image onto the DOC.
We're still waiting to hear from anyone who's been trying to get linux or QNX onto the netier.

The g_98lite.doc is not the same as the g_98lite.gho. Glitch created a new image so that everyone will be able to put the image on the chip without having to have Ghost (cost, wrong version, etc). The PUTIMAGE program is available from M-SYS the creator of the DiskOnChip and designed to do just this task, and it is free for the downloading. Glitch has a link a few post up to get this file.

New MessageNetwork Boot using PXE for the Netier or any other machine for the fact. (modified 0 times) kNiTe_oWl
Profile
Everyone has been waiting for the ability to do this so that the need to crack open the case and attach a HD to image the DOC will become a thing of the past. Well, here it is. Hopefully this will help others. Using the Network boot, I can send an Image to the DOC or get an Image from the DOC. Tested with both PUTIMAGE.EXE as well as GHOST.EXE. Format the DOC with DFORMAT.EXE, you get the gist, anything you want without having to open the case and attach a drive.

Requirements:
1. WinNT4 Server, haven't tested with anything else. May or may not work with anything else.
2. PXE PDK from Intel
3. At least one bootable floppy without anything on it, just the system files.

Steps:
1. Install WinNT4 Server with Network support and TCP/IP protocol. (If not already done)
2. Install the PXE PDK from Intel. http://www.intel.com/labs/manage/wfm/tools/pxepdk20/index.htm
3. Configure the PXE PDK as per the included instructions. I am not going to hold hand here, it is very easy if you read the manual.
4. Put the bootable floppy into your computer and run the tool to create the image. There is an icon for this in the program group (Not the API one). You will need to have your WinNT4 Server CD available for this, it needs files from there to create your network boot disk.
5. Attach the Server and your Netier to the same network.
6. Make sure the Netier is setup for Network Boot, comes as default, but in case you changed it.
7. Power up the Netier and once the Network Boot starts up, you will get a prompt to press F8 to display the menu.
8. Press F8 and select the DOSUDI item.

Once the system finish booting, you will be at the A: prompt, just map a drive to your server where you keep the images, image tools, whatever and you are all set to go.

yup the xl2000 has isa/pci slot and has floppy/cd drive build in ,btw the mobo is the same one as xl1000 ,only diffrence is the case
175.00 for xl2000???
since netier was taken over by wyse and no longer make them, only provide support for it and this make all netier's worth much less

Thanks for the PXE tips, KnightOwl. That might be the simplest way to get a fully functional OS onto the DOC yet!
Concerning g_98lite.doc, I still don't know where I can get a copy. I downloaded the GHO image, but the FTP site that I got it from doesn't seem to have the files anymore.

Can anyone point me in the right direction? If not, I should be able to use the GHO image, so I'll be okay.

Last but not least, does anyone have an answer to my compression question? It seems like the DOC would be quicker if it weren't compressed. Is there a way to decompress it? If so, will the 98lite image still fit?

Jester: The 98lite image is compressed to allow it to fit on the DOC. Before compression the build was greater than 72MB. The image would need to be compressed even if it was just under 72MB in order to make room for programs.

I've deleted some of the OS files that I know will never be used. I'm sure that many more can be removed. If you delete enough of them you may have space to decompress the "compressed drive" on the DOC.

kNiTe_oWl: Thanks for the PXE info. It gives me more incentive to get my Win2k server up and running again.

All: FYI, the .doc and the .gho images contain nearly the same contents. With the .doc image the partition does not need to be expanded to use the entire DOC and it is already marked active (bootable).

If anyone has a more stable home for the 98lite image, please let me know. It takes a couple of hours to upload the file. I don't want to keep uploading the file if it is just going to be deleted.

Thanks for clearing that up for me. I may just disable the DOC and run an uncompressed 98lite image from the harddrive. I did a little research, and it looks like the DOC isn't very fast anyway. If the harddrive is faster than the DOC, then I'll use it instead. I'm thinking I can get my boot times down if I use "Suspend to disk". Does this sound practical? I'm waiting on a nice slim harddrive to get here so I can proceed on my own. By the way, how are you guys mounting harddrives into the netier? I'm planning on disassembling the case and adding some mounting hardware. Any better ideas?

Thanks for the input, guys.

Just an FYI. Have two slim style notebook floppy drives (one teac and one epson) both the flat 26 pin ribbon crimp on type of connector. I also have one cable. Tried it yesterday with the Netier. No luck. Ordered a couple of ribbon cables for the addition of the 2.5 inch NB drive. If running them at 500Mhz (AMD KIII Plus 450Mhz) works with existing heatsink that should be fine...(Glitch? or where do you get a Lasagna fan from?)...very well build little machine...

Pete,

Running them with a K6-III/450 and the stock heatsink is really hot (150F+), I wouldn't recommend it. See my post above regarding the temps I saw trying it. I've been working on a mod of a surplus store heatsink/fan that is almost finished, initial results hold the temps down to around 97F after running Sandra Burn-In at max CPU demand for 50 cycles. I'm running the 12v fan at 7v, so essentially no noise whatsoever, and also running CPU Idle. The issue I have right now is the whole thing is a little too high, and I have to be careful milling down the face of the heatsink. If it gets too thin, it'l bend and not make good contact. I should know one way or the other tonight if it's a success. If not, I'll order a 12v Lasagna (iO version is 5v) and try it at 7v to eliminate the noise.

P.S. - Lasagna fans can be found at http://www.tennmax.com

My buddy's FTP site is stable. He just needs to create an account for us all to use. He's gonna do that tonight. I'd really like to see everyone put their images into a central location, so that we can all work to refine them. Linux, 98lite, NTembedded, XPembedded, QNX, etc. It's all good.

Also, anyone who's had luck with the PXE method and would like to write a tutorial or just alert the group to any pitfalls that might hold us up, that would rock. I think I'm gonna try to set up PXE tonight, even if I don't have an image I can use (I'm really nervous about the ghost image, after killing 2 harddrives). If it works, I'll have something written down by tomorrow. Wish me luck!

kNiTe_oWl: Thanks for the offer to upload the file. I'll let you do the upload. Let me know if you run into any problems. If you do, I'll upload the file as a backup plan. I think that it would be best to let the Ghost version of the image die. It was not my best work.

BubbaDog56: I use the $4 Lasagnas everywhere. I probably wouldn't if I had to pay $22/each. FYI, the clips to mount the heatsink to the socket-7 can be easily removed/reattached. These make a nice little chipset/486 cooler with the clips removed. Let us know how well the camera works. I've purchased several small cameras over the years and have always been disappointed with the quality of the output. Of course, this one is a Sony and stands a better chance of being a quality product.

I guess you are using the PDK setup. If that is the case, did you setup the "Discovery List?" Here is the steps that got mine to work.

1. From the main screen, right click on "proxyDHCP Server"
2. Choose "Configure proxyDHCP Server"
3. Click on the "Client Options"
4. Click on "Add to Bootserver Discovery List"
5. At the "Define Bootserver Discovery List" select from the "Bootserver List" number "3 DOSUNDI"
6. Enter in the IP address of the Boot Server(IP of current machine for mine) at the bottom and click on "Add to Discovery List"
7. Click "OK" then "OK" again.

Mine started working after this.

If anyone is curious, I have two of the SL1000 models. They have a Via VT82C597AT chipset with an ESS 1869F AudioDrive sound chip, and an SMC FDC37C669QF P 10/100 NIC chip. They have a MD2200-D48 DOC (48MB?), and came with 48MB RAM(one 32MB DIMM and one 16MB DIMM) and a CPU fan already installed. I already have a 2GB Hitachi hard drive (swiped from my Compaq iPAQ IA-1/MSN Companion hack) installed running Win 98SE. I found a great site for the Via drivers ( http://www.pcpartner.com.hk/dl_uti.htm ), but I still haven't been able to get the USB ports to work, and the HD is running in compatibility mode. I have taken some pics of the unit and MB and will have them posted at http://www.dustinnewton.com/sl1000 in a little while. From the pics of the XL1000 I have seen here, there are differences in the MB layout, particularly the DOC location. If anyone has any ideas on the USB or hard drive compatibility mode issues, I would greatly appreciate any input. I'm not sure what the speed of the CPU is because the CPU fan is bonded to the CPU,a nd SiSoft Sandra just sits there and looks at me when I ask for CPU information. The WYSE site said that the SL series comes with 180-300Mhz CPU options. These are really nice little systems. I hope that I can run across some more!

You can get it from http://www.storagesoft.com

Connected my notebook drive to a USB notebook case from Geeks ($21), formatted and put WIN98 on it. (just the directory). Put it in the Netier...works great. Anyone figure out a non-invasive way to mount the 2.5 notebook drive inside of the Netier? Next installation of the AMD KIII Plus...

Hey Pete was that the 6" cable you used or a 9" ? I have to order one so I can get back on track with this project. I hate having a cables too long.

There is a drive bay on the right front side of the unit (designed for a floppy/CD) and you can mount it to one side with some screws, but I was concerned with the tab that would stick up under the drive. It would touch (and probably kill) un-insulated electronics, not to mention put pressure on the board if you jostled the unit. I used three velcro round tabs to mount my drive in my system. Holds tight, yet is easily removable. I also mounted mine in a different position to allow more air to get to the warm HD (from the slots in the side of the case, as well as allow more airflor to the IDE contoller chip's heatsink. You can see where I've mounted it at http://www.dustinnewton.com/sl1000

I am using a 7 inch cable and it is too long for my liking. I have 5 inchers on order from cables online, and I think they will work better.

<RocketFuel> Your Netier looks totally different than mine. The face, mb and rear are totally different along with placement of chips on the board. Noticed that you have 2 serial ports (I have one). I have three audio ports in front.

<stretch> I used 9 inch ribbon cable (it's kind of long but a 5 inch may be too short)

<Glitch> Put the KIII Plus 450 running it at 450Mhz temperature went up to about 139 and stayed there. Does the Lasagna fan keep the procesor cooler
than 139 degrees? Also put a 4 gig HD in it.

<ALL> Noticed the VIA Busmaster drivers have an IRQ problem / memory location problem. I cannot adjust to change it. Are there other IDE bus drivers out there for the Netier?

PeteC:

Rocketfuel has an SL-1000, most everyone else has the XL-1000. I think from what I have read the SL series was the predecessor of the XL series. It was a socket7 board with slightly different features where the XL has a super socket7 board and thus supports faster procesors. I do wish the XL's had the Irda on the front like the SL's do though.

Well, i l0pht cracked the password for the user "totalcontrol"... i suppose if someone wanted to #### with the registry they could restore the embedded NT to a nonsecure state and use it instead of 98... at any rate, the password is

username: totalcontrol
password: ThinDomain
the pass is case sensitive, and to log on with it you'll have to disable the autologin in the network tab of TweakUI

Thank's for all the work on PXE

i couldn't find any of my NT discs when I went to set up PXE, so i had to manually dl all the files needed to create the bootdisk image. I'm not sure if that's where my problem started, but i can't get PXE to load the disk properly. dosundi.0 transfers control to the image I created, but then it just locks with a flashing cursor. Would someone mind uploading their working dosundi.1 image to the ftp site ftp://netier:netier@rebellands.net ? I would appreciate it, as I'm sure this would fix my problems. Let me know if anyone else has ran into this problem... my friend with NT isn't back for 4 or 5 days and i'd like to get this running before then.

Unfortunately, that's not an infrared port. It just covers the power and HD activity lights. There is a 4 pin jumper that an infrared transmitter/receiver migt slide onto, but it's not present in my systems.

I've got my XL-1000 up and going, running 98lite from the DiskOnChip. I intend to use it as a dedicated Ham Radio computer, running programs that use the on-board sound hardware for digital communications. I've installed VNC, http://www.uk.research.att.com/vnc/ (free), which allows me to control my ever increasing collection of oddball computers from a central pc/montior/keyboard.

Incidentially, I thought the XL-1000 came with a 300 mHz processor but apparently the stock chip is runnning at 250 mHz, 100 Mhz bus with 2.5 x multiplier, has any one else noticed this?

Hi stretch

How about $10 + shipping? Negotiable of course, but XL1000s are ~$50 on ebay incl pws, so I figured 20% for the pws.

Cheers!
