The interesting thing is I see these things EVERYWHERE at Baptist Memorial Hospital Memphis. Everyone uses thin clients over there, running 98 if I'm not mistaken with a program called Reflections for UNIX...go figure. I saw one in a garbage can once and didn't think too much of it. Guess now I'll have to go dumpster diving over there. Not really, I'd never dig through the garbage cans over at BMH...that's just sick.

I hope you ordered the optional stylus, it makes it a lot easier to turn the unit on. These units use the high resolution electro-magnetic type touch screen, so a regular stylus (or your finger) will not work. The battery will be dead when it receive it ( mine were). An I-Opener power pack works great as a power supply/trickle charger, but the plug will need to be changed. (I-Opener = 2.1mm ; PPT4340 = 2.5mm center pin)

Reverend_Jones,

PPT4340 looks like it could be a cool toy. How are you using it? Can you us the internal wireless network? Looks like it's not 802.11. What OS does it run? Some of the documentation talks Windoze but in other places it sounds like DOS and terminals only.

The units come with 2Meg Flash for the OS. This is pretty well filled up. There is also (2) type 2 PCMCIA slots. The internal slot contains the wireless network card. The external PCMCIA is available for use. Booting from PCMCIA is supported.

Rev,

Do the PCMCIA slots take 3.3v cards? If so, I can drop one of my HomeRF cards into the internal slot and an ATA Flash Disk into the external slot....

Rev,

Just got the PPT4340 today, overall in real good shape. Unfortunately, support for 5v PCMCIA only so no HomeRF card. Do you know what kind of 72pin SODIMM it takes, FPM or EDO? It says 16MB max expansion, but I wonder if it will see more. It did take one of my 175MB ATA PCMCIA flash disks fine, so I have some hope....

I have tried a 16meg 72 pin so-dimm, fast page,70ns. It did not work, locks up at memory test on boot. The on board memory is 60ns so maybe 70ns is too slow. An email to Symbol produced the following (non) info:

"Jim,

Unless you are Symbol certifitied, I am not authorized to give out any information on any
coponents that are used in symbol technology. If you want these units upgraded, you can call the
support center at1-800-653-5350 and have them call the repair depot to call you with a price
for the upgrade.Once the repair depot calls you with a price, you can send in the units for
upgrade."

Nice spelling!
16meg of ram is the maximum the chipset will support.

I know some people that work at Symbol, ex-Telxon folks I worked with before Symbol bought them out and moved manufacturing to Mexico. I'll see if I can get current contact info for them. These are neat little units, what are you doing with yours?

>>Processor:AMD Elan SC300 (100mhz) correct?

The processor is an AMD Elan SC310 33Mhz

>>how much ram came with unit?

The unit comes with 4Meg ram ; 16Meg is maximum.

>> Is there a harddrive or rom?

The OS is in flash rom. No harddrive or ide connector. It has (2) type 2 PCMCIA slots, one is available for flash card.

>>the RJ-41 jack is that a normal phone line or eithernet?

It has no RJ-41 jack. Available external ports are: serial, IrDA, power, PCMCIA, and PS/2. RJ-41 is listed as an accessary, probably a PCMCIA card.

>>What condition are the units in?

The units are lease returns. Of the 3 I got, all work fine. 2 look like new, 1 has a scratch on the lcd. All had sticker residue which was easy to remove with alcohol.

>>Is the pen needed?

The pen is used to power on the unit and also used as a mouse. The unit can be powered on by a hidden pushbutton instead. The Citrix WinFrame client and other software may require the pen-mouse.

>>Can you just go to rat shack and buy a power supply for them?

The power supply is 18vdc at 1.5 amp. Any laptop supply of 18-19vdc at 1.5 amp or greater will work. It uses a standard coaxial power plug with 2.5mm center pin.

>>Should i just shut up and spend the $30 for one?- Yes prolly

You mean you haven't ordered one (or more) yet?
If nothing else, it makes a nice x86 style gameboy.(I tried DOOM on it, but of course it was just for "testing purposes")

New MessagePPT4340 16Meg Memory Upgrade (modified 0 times) Reverend_Jones
Profile
A 16meg 72 pin so-dimm, fast page,70ns or faster is needed. To upgrade to 16meg the onboard memory must first be disabled. To disabled the onboard memory, first locate the sodimm socket. There are 2 memory chips installed under the socket. In between the memory chips and the Elan SC310 you will find two resister pads unpopulated, R129 & R131. Look closely at the R129 & R131 pads and you will see a circuit trace connecting the 2 pads of each resister together. The circuit trace connecting the 2 pads of R131 must be cut and the circuit trace connecting the 2 pads of R129 must be cut. Install the 16Meg sodimm and you are ready to go.
