Gotta see if they have any demand

Okay guys, long time since I've been around, now you won't be able to get rid of me. Here's the latest:

The Alcatel Web Touch Plus (see http://195.5.240.34/webtouch/pc/index_eng.asp for more info)

Anyone played with one?
Anyone think we can sell 6500+ or more of them?

Give me your feedback! Email me at lonny.paul@tigerdirect.com

I think it depends on 2 things:

- Price, certainly needs to be in that Audrey price range.
- Ability to connect to ethernet. I don't see any option for this. But there is a serial port for 'accessories' and a printer port. Maybe one of the accessories is some sort of serial->ethernet link...

Looks like a cool toy however.

Hi Lonny, wow, a direct contact from tiger, hope you let us know first when neat stuff arrives.

First my qualifications: I have: a couple IOpeners, a couple Virgins, an Epod, a Clio (which a better than a Epod since it has a real keyboard), 2 of the Rios from Tiger, just got 2 of the 50buck thin clients from a couple threads back, an audrey, a compaq (again from tiger) msn machine that i gave to my sister and 2 digital picture frames, in otherwords I like to buy neat stuff.

That said, I would pass on this thing unless:

1: It used winCE or was intel based
2: Had a pcmcia or usb port
3: Was < 199 bucks or less (for this I would say 119 or less)
4: Some hackable attributes (can you install a better program, etc).

Looking at the specs it fails #1 and #2.

There was another phone type device out there that looked somewhat the same and it was not hackable at all.

Lonny:

i'd buy it for the cool factor alone, if the price is right.

that it has a 7.5" 256 color touchscreen is very interesting. if the price is below $100, i'm sure some folks might pick it up just for the touch screen. even the web browser might be used for home automation, ala Audrey. but we'd need some method to directly connect Ethernet, even if it's USB or Home PNA.

the Compaq IA-1 had no touchscreen, but was x86 w/BIOS and WinCE, and the Audrey was x86 no BIOS and QNX. can you obtain any information on what embedded software this thing is running (QNX?, VXworks?, GASP---Linux?!) maybe there are some older Alcatel press releases on this thing, somewhere. (hey, Google!!) and any vendor information regarding the downloadable software updates would be EXTREMELY invaluable (look at the 3Com web updates scythic and others spoofed.)

Thanks !!

Keith

Lonny,

It looks like a neat gadget, but I agree that some connection method other than dialup would probably be necessary along with a sweet price point. My stable consists of 2 iOpeners, 1 Netier thin client, 1 Moniputer (from Tiger), 1 iNet, and a Fujitsu Point510 and a Symbol PPT4300 in transit. Oh yeah, and 2 regular desktop PCs. All networked using a combination of wired and wireless, so connectivity of whatever I look at is important....

B'Dog

Dang, I just realized how much stuff I have. And I still want more? Maybe we better start iO Anonymous. "Hi, my name is Bob and I'm a digiholic."

Does look like a cool toy ..... but it seems that's all it is.

Upside:
cool screen may be good for parts

Downside:
300k max. size of email
no attachment support
no ethernet connection
serial>ethernet adaptor ? why bother

Looks like a phone with a cool address book hanging on it.
I'd pay $49.95

It looks GREAT to me, and I'd buy one if the price was right.

We have an internet phone in our den -- it's one of the CIDCO units made for BigPlanet. It's a dreary grayscale LCD, while the Alcatel unit you're considering is color. Plus your Alcatel unit has a bigger rolodex feature.

I would bet that you could sell a slew of these. Maybe not to the hardened Linux-Hacker crowd who already is saturated with web access devices, but my guess is that an affordable internet phone like that would be very attractive to general consumers who get the Tiger catalog. In any event, put me down for one.

Hey Randy, is that BigPlanet CIDCO phone hackable or usable in any other way? One of my relatives has one they aren't using any more.

Thanks, Zogg

If at a good price of 40 to 75 may be worth it. I wonder what the screen rez is. Also what embedded "OS" is it running? The touch screen is a very nice feature and if the LCD has its own "controller" with a simple to control { IE no wacko timing interface } would be greate for the MP3Car player, MP3Home player or Strange Controller group.

Like the other commenters, would be worth while if the OS on this box could be modified or replaced or if the screen could be access without designing a controller for it. Else sorry, it worm food.

Hum. Wonder if a simple interface box could be worked up to allow it to connect directly to a PC modem. With some software would act like a gateway to your local LAN or to the Internet. Just a though.

Thats what hooked me on the Cybiko for another off hour project. Decent graphics with 4 levels of gray, SDK to make my own addons and "its Cheep!" ;) Also that madding pool game was also a factor!

It uses the Sun Microsystems Chorus operating system, but can't tell which version from the MDtel page at http://www.mdtel.com/webtouch.html

Version 4.01 of the Chorus OS looks reasonably network friendly:
http://www.sun.com/chorusos/ds-chorusos.401.html

Lonny: Can you tell us what CPU/chip this unit runs, and what version of the Chorus OS runs on it?

I would not buy one unless I knew more about the hacking possibilities. If it's impossible or prohibitively difficult to flash the disk or boot from an alternate medium, I don't know how useful it would be.
