Just quick heads-up about a phone/voicemail system that may be if interest to some of you.

http://bgm.bgmicro.com/prodinfo.asp?sid=046164351851851968615039&prodid=ACS1360&page=1&cri=phone&stype=3

I bought one of these because I am tired of the phone solicitors constantly calling. This phone system answers the call (without any phones ringing) and prompts the caller to select a user. Once this is done, the call is transferred to the users phone and rings with the users distinctive ring (all programmable). There are a whole bunch of other features that I won't go into. They are described here http://www.premisenet.com/ourproducts.html .

The system works well for me. It has a few quirks and you pretty much have to follow the paradigm designed by the manufacturer. I am happy with mine. It has cut the number of junk calls from 10-20 per day to 1-2 per week.

Also, while you are at BGMicro, look at this VF display. It seems to be a pretty good deal. I'll know more about them when they arrive later this week.

Hi Glitch,

I've been considering these but was hesitant since I saw no way to get additional 'remote units' to set up additional phones. Are the remote units available seperately as well?

Glitch:

Does this device support second audio source for HOLD? In other words, when a caller is placed on HOLD (I assume it has HOLD), can they be treated to a radio or pre recorded message to listen to while on hold?

Thanks

iOiOitsOFF2WORKiGO: Yes, it has a hold feature. It is listed on the third page of feature descriptions here: http://www.premisenet.com/ourproducts.html

It does not have an input for "music on hold". PremiseNET did a good job listing the system features on the website. I haven't noticed any features that weren't listed there.

The MAXX does not have the programmability of a full blown voicemail/pbx system. It also doesn't have the price tag of a full blown system. For the most part, the system functionality is well thought out. There are a few minor things that I would like to change. However, these don't bother me enough to return the MAXX and buy something that costs 5 to 10 times more.

I haven't opened the case yet to see if these have any hacking potential. I'm not sure if I would hack the software it even if I could. I will eventually modify the unit to have a remote LED display so I can put the main unit in the basement and still see the message indicators.

Hi Glitch,

It looks interesting. I've been trying to find something like this. How does it handle call blocking? Can I set it up to block all unknown name/unknown number callers (telemarketers)? Does it have a feature to let family calling from pay phones (unknown name/unknown number) punch in a code to ring through?

cerulean: I can't tell you too much about the CallerID features since I'm too cheap to pay for this service.

Here is what I know from reading the manual:

  • There are two lists; the private number list and the blocked number list
  • You can store up to 10 combined entries (private & blocked) per telephone line.
  • A number in the private number list will route automatically to a user.
  • A number in the blocked number list will route automatically to a voice mail box.

I assume that "unknown name/unknown number callers" could be set up as an entry and routed to a default mailbox. However, I have no way of testing this to say for sure.

A friend of mine also has a Maxx system. He also has CallerID. The next time I see him I'll ask about how he set up the private/blocked lists and how well they work.

The system does have an "emergency code" that will ring though to preselected phones. This could be used for family members calling from cell/pay phones. I have not played with this feature so I can't comment on how well it works.
