ZapMedia ZapStation price drop

Saw this on Techbargains. A digital multimedia storage box? Don't know how one would classify it;

Zapmedia dropped their Zapstation to $599 from $1499. If you put in the comments field 'JUST LINUX' they will ship you the box with just Linux installed (and code to control the IR input and screen).

hmmm, not sure why I would buy this. I'd rather use a generic linux box as a server, rip with a pc, do video with a hacked TIVO and playback mp3s with an audiotron, dell receiver or pc. (which I what I do now.... LOL)

if they wanted <200, I'd probably buy one cause I could...

Of course others may have different ideas.

I got the ZapStation back on July 2002 for the $599 price. It's ok. But it was just sitting there. Just some days ago I thought it must be a computer in side. They just don't want you to get in side it. The screws are star shaped with a pin in the middle. I have the tool to get them off. In side is a ECS P6STP-FN mother board. I removed the hard drive put it in my computer on the 2nd IDE my boot drive on the 1st IDE is my Windoes XP boot drive. The BIOS seen it as just a 10 MB drive. It would go to boot but say error and it would only let me go back in the BIOS. I guess they have the drive locked. I wanted to at lest do a True Image of it. Any way the ZapStation has a BIOS in it just for it. You can't get in to it with DEL. But on ebay I got the same motherboard for only $9.95. I have not got it yet but will swop the BIOS chip when I get it and try to use this ZapStation like a computer. I will replace the hard drive with another one. I will want to still use it as a ZapStation later on. I can't find any place on the net were some one else all ready has hacked there ZapStation. I guess they made it to hard to. But I am sure it can be.

As far as the 10MB hard drive issue goes..

It sounds like ZapMedia is using the same method to 'lock' the hard drive as TiVo. With TiVo, there's a "qunlock" utility that will probably fix that.

You can get that utility here:
www.9thtee.com/qunlock.exe

You'll need to boot up to a Win9x/DOS prompt to use it.
