MP3s and 486...Best bet?

I've managed to score, so far, a Thinkpad 730T Tablet (12MB RAM, 33mhz), Thinkpad 750Cs (20MB RAM, 33mhz), and an offbrand settop box similar to the Websurfer classic, that has a AMD 486-66 with 8MB RAM I believe. I've did some research about MP3 playing, but haven't been able to find much. What would be the best way to play MP3s (i.e. DOS MP3 player/loader, bare linux distro with audio and mp3 player, etc.) Anyone have any ideas?

Not much chance on either of the Thinkpads, but you can try upgrading the set-top box with an AMD 486DX4/100..133 and running Windows 3.1/Winamp on it.

You might be able to play MP3s on these machines if you can find an old LP3 for the LPT port. Their site seems to be gone but they show up on eBay every now and then. It works with my IBM Thinkpad 760CD.

Of all my computer junk lying around here is what I found for minimums with bare Linux 2.4.8 at 16bit and 128 rate with mpg123:

either 486-DX100 or Pentium 75

you can go lower but have to lose the 16 bit or sample rate.

A while ago I installed windows 95 and winamp on an intel 486/66 with 16 megs of ram, and it played mp3's very well, at a very high quality, I was surprised...

DAMP - http://www.damp-mp3.co.uk/

DAMP is a free MP3 player for DOS, which not only allows the playback of MP3 files, but also the visualisation of the audio through responsive image manipulation. Not just "here's a pretty pattern", but images that respond to the audio in order to create a richer, more fulfilling experience.
