The Geeks have an Internet Server Appliance for $199.00 which may be of interest to all you crazy hackers out there. I'm broke. All my money goes to my daughters college tuition.

This appears to be a nice little appliance. I don't see much reason to hack it though. I prefer to build my own machines for serving though, so it doesn't appeal to me.

I would be a bit sceptical of support, especially if this is a discontinued item from 3COM.

Still for anyone in need of a quick to setup, full-featured server box, this is a good find.

I received mine in the mail yesterday. I cracked the case and it turns out it's a Sahara-1000 Book PC repackaged by 3Com. Since I want a larger File Server I took out the 10G HD, saved the disk image using TrueImage and then put the image on the 20Gig HD. The 20Gig booted like a champ. I then took out the 20Gig and repartitioned it using Partition Magic to utilize the additional disk space. Again, it booted and ran like a champ. There is definitely a lot of hacking potential here. I need to try it on a larger HD, I have a 120G Maxtor on order from Dell. I plan on adding that to the Internet Appliance to make a large, cheap, semi-dedicated file server.

Just to recap, this appliance has a web interface to configure the: Internet connection, firewall, router, email server, web server (include individual web pages for each user), printer server, and file server. It also allows a web proxy server to be enabled and web access privileges to be granted by users (the ultimate home net-nanny). All in all, it's a great value at $199. Yes, you could do all of that with Red Hat and a PC carcass, but this is nicely packaged in a small, quite PC case and doesn't require any futzing. Even the hack is very easy (assuming you have TrueImage and Partition Magic).

The box has a 500Mhz Celeron, 64M RAM, on board sound, video, USB, and LAN (though sound, video, mouse & keyboard inputs are covered - I presume they work but haven't tried them). It comes with a 10.6G Fujitsu HD and a second LAN card. There appears to be room for two more PCI cards. Internally there is mechanical room for a laptop CDROM, but the plastic front will not accommodate a CDROM (at least without the use of a Dremel tool). As far as noise goes, I doubt that it's quiet enough for an audio rack, but it was quieter than the other PC's in my home, work area. Other tidbits, there's only room for one hard drive. The OS is some variant of Linux. It's standard enough for TrueImage and Partition magic to recognize the file system. I believe that Sahara-1000 drivers are available on the Internet so it might be possible to run Windows.

Guess I'm trying hard to see the value in this little server box.
Unless the loaded software is something really great, one could just built it from parts, use Linux or whatever OS wanted and get the same results for about the same price.
I am tempted to invest in the thing,
but for just over $200 I can get a pretty good MB, processor, RAM and Hard Drive put my own OS, and software on it..

How about telling us if the loaded software is anything special.
Is it Linux ?
What software does it include.?

I agree you, I could build a equivalent system very cheaply out of parts I have laying around at home. But it wouldn't be as small. It wouldn't be headless (which is a plus to me). It wouldn't be turnkey. What I really wanted out of this was a cheap, small, file server that I can put my MP3's on to serve to my Audiotron. The fact that it does so much more and is turnkey makes the deal sweeter to me. I personally don't mind coping the hard disk and repartitioning it to get a larger file server. That takes only a few minutes of my time. Building a Linux server would require many hours to a few days of my commitment. So far I'm very happy with the way the Internet Server works (BTW www.compgeeks has links to the manuals so you can see roughly what the software offers).

After setting up the Internet server and downloading some updates (primarily Front Page support) I can say it's almost as easy to set up as my Linksys Router/Switch. The only glitch I've run into so far is that I haven't figured out how to get VPN client on LAN to talk through the firewall to a server on WAN. The support seems to be for the opposite (an external client trying to make a connection to a VPN server on the LAN). Hopefully I can solve this tonight.

Galenaway,
According to the last post the 3Com appliance is using Red Hat 6.1 Linux.
Can you verify this ?
I would be more inclined to purchase one if I knew it used a standard Linux OS.

opened the case.
and change the root passwrd, so I can login to the box. it has free space around 7.5G (planningto add 2nd hardrive for file server 4 my windows machine, need 2 install samba though)
back-uped the disk using nortonGhost through TC/IP p2p (got the original Image around 105 MB with compression).
The box is real linux box, all common daemon are running accept telnetd ,will add it.
for 200 bucks is fair enough 4 me, I will mess around with the configuration, probably hack the html, daemons and configuration for my needs, when have time. and probably will adopt the system to websurfer as broadband router and server.
the box is small comparing with my another Linux box, and the case is strong enough and neat :)

Mooner,

Yes it booted up fine. It appears that you can login directly from the shell but I do not know the admin name or password. I did see, after rereading the posts, that peter was able to set the root password.
One think that would be nice to change is the coded network limitation. It appears that the box wants to be on the private 192 network. When I booted the box it determined, DHCP client?, that it was not on a 192 net and gave an error.

Hi guys.
sorry again, my DSL connection disconnect again, bad weather again.. hmmm. its up now.....

what errors are?...

if you can boot from the harddrive, is easy to change the root password.
when the screen shows "lilo boot:" , just type "linux s" , it goes to single user as a root.
when "# prompt" shows, type "passwd" to change root password. and reboot it , just press ctl-alt-del.
you are done, now you can add daemon, or linux source code, what ever u want, or hack the html file and scripts file, which comes from 3com IS.

after it boots up, press alt-F2 for opening 2nd virtual screen, and login as a root and your new password.

btw, it will try to connect DHCP server, better to have DHCP in your network.

yes, don't scare about scramble admin passwrd. just ignore it. till know don't know what's is the meaning, if have time, will dig in the 3comIS scripts..and progs.., and 1st virtual screen is just a dump messg from what's going on in 3comIS, kind of a report.

so far that I know....

well been messing with the e-smith for a while now and it rocks...lots of open source addons for it make it highly customizable. Groupware, ecommerce, vpn all available addons for it. Even if you bought the 3com, Id be inclined to back it up and slap the e-smith image onto it and read up, if for no other reason than e-smith is based on a later RH version than the 3com.

if yes , try to opening webpage from the machine(3comis, not admin webpage).
can you open the webpage?
if yes, you can the admin webpage
if no, the webserver in the machine is down (need to access through root console) or did you specified a certain IP address can access admin webpage?

if you can access root console, (through tty2.... , I guess); check the /var/log directory, and check the log files for errors..
and try to ping from the machine to other machine (your local lan)..
you can do everything under root account
if U want, I can host the image back , so U can download it..

My HD upgrade experience seems to be going well so far:

I started with a new Segate 80gig drive and formatted the whole thing as one NTFS partition. I then used Norton Ghost to drop the image previously provided on this thread on to the drive. Although the original image was only for the original 10 gig, Ghost partitioned and linux formatted the entire 80 gigs, which included one large 63gig partition that the server seems to use for file storage. I have not attempted to make any of the other partitions smaller to get more file storage room because I'm unsure of the consequences.....Can anyone offer advice here???.........

When I first put the big drive in the 3comis, the BIOS did not detect it with the IDE parameters set to AUTO. Manually entering the cylinders, heads, etc. info caused it to boot fine.

It would be nice if the 3comis ADMIN interface gave some info as to how much file storage is actually available. I've put about 7gigs on it so far and ASW. Exaimining the disk (outside the 3comis)with Partition Magic shows the 7gigs nicely filling the 63gig space.

I have a 120 gig on order that should be here in a few days for my final configuration of the box.

I notice that FIC has just posted a new bios UC615 for the Sahara 1000 motherboard on which the 3C19504 is based.

Here: ftp://ftp.fic.com.tw/bios/systems/sahara1000/

The 3C19504 lacks a floppy connector so I imaging any flashing would have to be done by CD. There is no documentation as to what the bios does, but I would hope it would enable recognition of larger hard drives. I am not certain the generic Sahara 1000 bios is suitable for this piece, so try it at your own risk.

I hooked up a keyboard/mouse/monitor; then adjusted the bios to boot first from CDrom. Hooked up a CDrom drive (you have to substitute a dual connector ide cable. Booted to dos using a bootable CDR (the win98SE cd actually) and then loaded the bios from a CDR using the loader included in the 615 zip file. It worked fine. I am not sure what good it did however, as it still did not recognize my 100gig drive. When I loaded the cylinders etc specs manually things the drive worked fine, but I do not know if it recognized the whole 100 gig. The actual bios date is 11/2000 so it is about a year newer than stock.

I installed 40 GB, the BIOS didn't recognize the hardrive.
I set the number of sectors limitation jumper on the hardrive , and the BIOS recognized it, install linux with clarkconnect (disable daemons which has no source code/clarkconnect propietary such as: suva, monitoring sw...., and use no-ip for dynamic-ip hostname).
So far there is no problem with the bios limitation.. I guess, don't need to update the bios though, if gonna use under linux.

Go figure....

I just loaded the clean 3comis GHOST image on a new WD 120gig HD. Slapped it in the 3comis and it auto booted without any manual BIOS entries.

The GHOST image initially partitioned the HD into four Linux Ext2 partitions of approx. 463, 11774, 5883, and 94702 MB, plus a Linux Swap partition of 1569 MB. I repartitioned it to 157, 1247, 1498, 110000, and 1568 respectivly.

All seems well so far, and it appears that I now have a nice 110 GB MP3 file server..

Also.........."HDOUTLET" is selling lots of 3comis with Linux OS only on eBay with no reserve...........they seem to go for about $135-$150.........this is where I got mine

I'm a Linux newbie and need a little handholding getting this little guy setup.

I've d/l'ed the 3COMIS image for Ghost (I have Ghost 7.5 Corp) and replaced the existing 10G drive with a 30G which the bios sees just fine. How do I configure and run Ghost to put the image on the new drive?

I tried to do it the 'normal' way I use ghost, but all it would do is make one partition and when I used Ghost Explorer to view the contents of the Ghost image I saw like 5 different partitions! I'm sure that I'm close, but I have no idea how to proceed. Any help would be GREATLY appreciated!!!!

I had no problem with it using the Ghost from Norton 2002. I had the hard drive as slave in another computer, booted from the floppy drive using the ghost start up disk, and it gave me the option of reinstalling all of the partitions.
I did not use the downloaded image however, I used one that I had made myself so this one could be different.

That said, I am no longer using the original 3com image which has not been updated in almost a year, and would suggest you consider the "Clarkconnect" option described above instead. It is only a little more difficult to set up (you need to temporarily attach a CDrom drive and a monitor). Once set up, and the web interface turned on, it is just as easy to use, and much more flexible and complete. In addition it is based on a much newer linux kernel, and is still being updated and improved, and you can't beat the price, free. Works on the 3com box just great, and there are a ton of additional plug ins made for it for you to play around with if you like.

Sorry to butt in so late into discussion with another box. But from the first look for little more money you can get much nicer package. Check it out:

re. Toshiba box

Interesting box. Appears aimed at high end home market with lots of talk about AudioTron connectivity, etc. Apparently room for a 2nd HD and comes equipped with an integral 7 port ethernet switch which is nice

April 2002 PC mag review showed list price of $1,300 and generally trashed the box in their review vs. other small business servers.......but..... for $275.00......and home-hacker use maybe it's a good deal.

Does anybody know if Toshiba is dumping the whole product line or just this particular config? Does anybody have one of these, or am I going to have to be the first brave soul?

Re:Toshiba
It appears the SG10 series is being discontinued, but the SG20 (using a Celeron 566MHz rather than an AMD K6/2 350) is not.

Certainly a very nice find. I like the built in 7 port switch, and with the LCD read out and silver casing it certainly looks cooler than the 3Com (an important factor!). It comes out of the box with some useful home lan functionality, though the 3com works great for that too.

For me the downsides would be the slower processor and the use of 4200 rpm laptop drives which could limit upgradeablility. In addition, the included software seems to be quite restrictive in what it lets you do or not do. It appearantly renames your lan, and must be the DCHP server.

Because it lacks VGA/ps2 ports it may be harder to hack if you wanted to replace the software which is not that hard on the 3Com. I think the 3com due to its flexibility was a better choice for me, as well as the lower cost (about $100 less on Ebay).

I would be very interested in hearing from someone who has one of these. Very tempting.

hey i was reading the pdf manual on the sg10 from tosh site and it seems some things are weird with this unit. In the email setup they only reference pooling mail from an isp or internal routing. can this not be a stand alone internet mail server?

Also, no public web page for a company only an INTRANET. Im really tempted to ditch my router and use one of these instead but Im afraid these little gotchas are only the tip of the iceberg on this one...does ANYONE out there own or have played with one of these things?

These unit are now only $199.00 .
The unit has a great looking case will look good in my A/V rack, and runs Redhat Linux, 20 GBHD, and 64MBRAM, 9 LAN Ports, AMD k6-350 CPU. Sets up through its webpage.
The unit holds two 2.5 inch hard drives, not sure if it would address a larger Hard Drive larger than 20.
The shipping is expensive at $36.00 .
I'm going to hold out a day or two as I search the internet and read all the reviews.
But my first impression is this is a great deal, and I am fighting the temptation to just order it (Someone please tell me its a bad deal so I won't.. Ha Ha) .
My only concern is the fact it says nothing about public webpage access only intranet (Bummer).
But it would host my MP3 files great from what I read, and works with my Audiotron.
Anyone have one of these yet ?
Heres one of many reviews I saw.

toshiba AG-10 is a nice internet Appliance, good for somebody has'nt purchased 3com IS (I have one).

I'm using 3com IS, upgraded 40GB harddisk( the setup BIOS misknown the total cylinder, sector.... etc, but Linux will handle everything). I installed clarkconnect with some of my modification scripts and disabling all the propietary code from clarkconnect :).

It run greats (using DSL-earthlink, sharing connection with2 of my friends). running all days and all weeks, almost 3 months without rebooting and glitches).

I do sharing mpg files for local use, and downloads files (my friends too). it's really stable..
the nextstep is modify and install streaming video and audio (check www.videolan.org),if possible? don't know about the juice of celeron 500MHz is barely enough or not.

just a cent of my sharing...

Hello,
I was wondering if one of you still has a disk image of the 3com internet server? Mine unfortunately freezes before the boot completes and I'd like to reinstall it.

Mail me at my nickname at gmail.com
Thanks a lot in advance,

I have recently aquired a 3com internetserver and having problems. Was expecting to hear two beeps at end of boot up to indicate the server had come up but this did not happen. Powered down and attached a monitor and keyboard to see what was happening then repowered up.

The last few line at boot up are as follows:

/dev/hda7: contains a file system with errors, check forced.
/dev/hda7: Unattached inode 2752282
/dev/hda7: UNEXPECTED INCONSISTENCY; RUN fsck MANUALLY (i.e. , without -a or-p otions)
*** An error occurred during file systemcheck
*** Dropping you to a shell; the system will reboot
*** when you leave the shell
Give root password for maintenance
(or type Control-D for normal startup):

At this point the server hangs.

Tried using a a redhat rescue disk to access the root but failed. I do not seem to be having much luck.

Any chance of downloading a clean image of the 3com system? Many thanks.
