Hey there all I was just wondering if anyone has done up a system using the VIA ITX form factor. They have started shipping them and some different sized cases also.

I am looking at doing up a little entertainment computer using one and was just wondering if anyone has any stories to tell about it.

Also anyone know a good source of slimeline DVD or CD drives?

Here is one supplier that I found:

Surplus Computers in Santa Clara has some 2x notebook DVD drives for $14.95. These are actually OEM Toshiba SD-C2002 drives. These have a JAE connector on the drive, but have a pigtail cable attached to it with a proprietary notebook connector on it. This is easy to remove. However, you still need an IDE-to-JAE converter card, which comes with some kinds of BookPC systems.

I was able to get it to play movie DVDs with no difficulty. An added bonus is that they are, or can be made, region-free.

Hey thanks Linuxguru. I went ahead and got one of the barebone ITX systems to mess around with ... if nothing else it will be a decent web surfing machine for me to give to a family member.

I will let the group know what I am able to do with it.

Apparently, PC Progress (www.pcprogress) has the Via IPX motherboard/CPU for sale. Now I know the VIA C3 is a dog, but a MB and a 800mhz CPU for $80.00 is cheap. Plus it has TV out. I wonder how one of those PS1 LCD displays would work? This definitely has possibilities.

I am confused, $80, seems a little too cheap compared to the 300+ price tags i have seen on those, does anyone know if its for real, because if it is its a steal of a price!!!

That price is correct ...

Case outlet and also Idot.com has the same mother boards. Mine is supposed to be in monday or tuesday so I will give it a run around ... I am tossing a slim line DVD plyer into it and a old HD to see how it handles movies and also plays MP3's. Hell I got a case, 128 megs of ram, cpu and motherboard shipped for $204.00 shpped doesn't seem that bad of a deal if it can handle some basic tasks.

I will let you all know next week.

seems like the best deal is to get the 800MHz board and the case seperately.. cheaper than the bare-bones system on caseoutlet.

MB $80 (PcProgress)
case $75.00 (iDot)

total $155.00

Do you have any good sources for slimline DVD rom drives?

As for a small flat panel screen what size are you looking for Mick73? Since the ITX does have on board TV out you could always try one of the little Playstations LCDs that are being sold out there.

Not sure what to do then ... easiest LCD would be either one that accepts VGA or an NTSC signal so you do not have to try to hack together a convert for the LCD screen. I used to like to peruse www.eio.com for LCD stuff maybe take a look in there.

I am putting my ITX board together tonight or tomorrow it is a slick little system even has sp-dif out from audio card.

Plenty of ITX info out there. I picked up a Shuttle SV-25/1.3Ghz Celeron (the motherboards are available seperately)and will grab an EPIA to recase as a thin client. The prices are right and the capabilities crush older "appliances" by comparison. Plenty of scope for mods and tweaking.

Take a look at this site this is where I ended up ordering mine from.

The shipping was free and I liked the service from them. They called once I ordered to verify what they were packing was what I wanted and provided me with the tracking number once it was sent.

My system is almost together I am just waiting on a slimline CD/DVD to standard IDE adapter hopefully it will be in today or tomorrow.

Thanks a bunch. I had seen this one. I will be getting mine from there. I talked to someone at CaseOutlet about buying the DC power board and external AC plug seperately. Of course they said no. I have seen similar things at MPJA but it looks like they just have the needed line outs for the HDD and CD and 3.5Disc drives, nothing for board power. I have also seen some that have the AT style dual plugs for AT boards but no line out voltages for the drives. I am trying to come up with the smallest PS for these ITX boards. The person at CaseOutlet also said that the power connectors were unique to ITX and I have read other documentation that says the ITX boards are ATX PS compliant. If they are is the E-Machines power supply ATX and therefore the smallest most cost efective PS for these boards?

Well I have it up and running so far I am pretty impressed but I have not had a chance to test out all of the functions currently I just have it sitting on the coffee table hooked up to the TV and am writing this from it.

The picture quality with surfing on the tv is better than I thought it would be ... but no where like a monitor.

next will be to load up the DVD software and hook it into my theatre system and see how it can handle those tasks.

I will let folks know.

Well here is my review of the ITX system I put together.

So far I like it. I am running the 800mhz board with 128 megs of ram. I was going to use an older hard drive but I decided if I want this to be in my media rack near my stereos and what not I should get a fluid drive so it can be nice and quiet so I got the maxtor 80gb from Staples. I also have the slimline DVD-rom in it that I bought off of ebay (toshiba sc2302 I believe)

Setting the system up under windows2000 was cake, the driver disk included from VIA got the syustem up and running and on the tv within an hour (took a long time to format the 80gb disk)

from there I hooked up the onboard NIC to my other computer and was surfing the net. But we all knew that the system would be able to surf the net.

I was mostly intersted in how it would handle DVDs and the digital sounds. Well I have happy to report it handles them great. I was worried the first movie I ran (Star Wars Episode 1) was hogging up 100% of the Cyrix processor but I searched around in PowerDVD and found the allow hardware acceleration once I cliked this the playback was perfect and it took up approx. 65% of CPU usage.

The SPDIF out is excellent I tried a couple different setup tests and it output them perfectly to my receiver each time.

All in all I think I like it and it will definetly become part of my system rack.

Drop me a line if you want me to answer any questions about it.

Hi - I'm using both the EPIA 500 & 800 on ITX mother boards and they seem to run just fine apart that is with DVD playback.
I seem to be getting play back problems with PowerDVD (& WinDVD).. (even with PowerDVD hardware acceleation setting turned on (seems to have no effect to me)). The CPU is running at 100% on MS XP, (turned everything else off/no apps running and DVD is in UDMA 4 mode). Looks to me like the VIA graphics card drivers (from the VIA web site) are not using video acceleration.. Looking at the S3 Video drivers site none of the drivers seem to want to install... anybody else had a problem or a solution? thanks Si

These are some ideas and may not do anything but usualy worth a try.

Have you though of trying a previous OS? Each "revision" one takes a bit more horsepower than the last. May want to try w2k then ME { ugh! } etc. Wasent there a test done when XP pop out stating it was 25% slower than w2k? Did you do a regualr install? May want to do a minumn install. Also turn off all flashy settings etc.

What screen resolution and color depth are you running at? If not 800x600 at 16 bit then you may want to cut back just for giggles.

Also have you tried a Nvida style card temporary? I know it would be through the PCI slot & no composit/SVIDEO out but may be worth a temporary try.

Last do you have the latest Power DVD version? Just a though.

It's small and includes a trackball. Haven't decided if this is good or bad yet, but the mouse buttons are on the opposite side of the keyboard from the trackball. So far, that seems like a pretty good decision, given its size and how I tend to grip/hold it.

Willcock, I would suggest maybe trying a windows 2000 install ... or look to see what other processes are running while you are trying to play the dvd. If you do a ctrl-alt-delete and look into that task manager and then processes you may see that there is a ton of stuff taking up resources that are not needed. Like for instance right now on my XP box I have Acrobat and Winword listed as processes and I do not have either of those open. They just get loaded into memory so they can open up faster the next time around.

As a side note I wanted to tax the 800 system a little more so I shoe horned a Avertv Stero PCI card into it to see how PVR functions might work on the system. I am still testing it but it seems to work pretty good. But I can't get the tv sound to come out the SP/dif it wants to come out just the standard audio out I will have to look into that. Also when doing recording or pausing you have to go to one of the lower compression settings in order not to get skipped frames. This can be helped with the addition of some more ram but the processor will still limit the overall compression.

inx3us try to look up the specs on the power supply in the cupid 2677 case. The power supply is an external power supply that provides an internal DC board with the power. I cannot find my specs on it but some people over at the Small Form Factor forum on viahardware are looking at getting just the DC board to use in DC projects i.e. car.

I am currently using my itx in a 2677 case hooked up to my tv and stereo system to surf, watch DVD's and be an mp3 jukebox.

Hope this helps a little.

Ive tried doing just that. It seems next to impossible to find a supplier for the DC board. I have seen a 12v in ATX type PS, it's about 7"X2"X1" and runs about $119. A bit much at this time. I have resolved myself to using a small e-machines type PS for my ITX project.

Did anybody here pick up the $89 black mini-ITX barebones system from Fry's? It was sold out at Sunnyvale today (and there was no display unit either, although the yellow merchandise description tag was still there), so I'm not sure if it was just a case or included a motherboard. The tag said it required a slimline CDROM drive, so I guess notebook DVD drives would also work.

If anybody managed to snag one, please post here with a link if possible. Was it a Socket-370 or did it have a soldered CPU?

I had asked about a small PS a while back. I didn't get much response. To me it looks like the smallest PS to use would be on from an e-machine. I would love to find a supplier for the DC-DC power board that the ITX-2677 over at caseoutlet uses. That would open up an additional million uses for this form factor. Any info would be appreciated.

Oh, but those eMachines first-generation ATX, 135 watt power supplies are such garbage, I hesitate to recommend them. I have one from a friend's system we upgraded, couldn't use the thing to power the new motherboard setup (nothing fancy, ECS K5SEM + 1.0 gHz Duron). Wouldn't even light the case LEDs. Possibly due to the age of the power supply, or perhaps it doesn't meet the needs of the AMD processor, including the peripherals on the all-in-one m/b, though it runs the original 433 Celeron eMachine all-in-one (not well, though - won't shut down properly, hangs up the OS occasionally).

Worse yet, not only is it unstable, but it has this aggravating high pitched hum that would eventually cause me to pick up an axe and pave a bloody road to hell. I've heard others with similar complaints about the eMachine p/s.

(It should be noted that my brother has the same p/s in an eMachine 400 he uses as a webserver, and it's not given him any trouble that he's mentioned to me. But I think it's the exception.)

If anybody has any thoughts on constructing custom (internal OR external) power supplies for projects, I'd love to hear it. My limited electronic knowledge ends right around there, though like most I could build anything with plans and a parts list.

The Fry's mini-ITX unit was just a plain case + 55w power supply for $89.99. It's called the 2677, so it must be the Cubid/Cupid 2677. They still have stock at San Jose, but I passed on buying one. The build quality is only fair; IMHO, the FIC Sabre/Samba/Crusader are better units, but larger.

FYI

Here is another variation on the ITX form factor.

http://www.nexcom.com/product/ebc/ebc563/

If you read the text and look closely at the image you'll notice an unusal power supply connector. The documentation refers to an external power brick. An external PS sure would add some flexibility to making custom cases. Unfortunately, I can't find any information on pricing or availablity.

Hey there guys sorry I have not responded lately. I love my little ITX system actually. I have not tried playing Divx movies on it yet and it would probably be quite the stretch for it.

I do have a avertv card installed in it and use showshifter to time#### and record tv shows, it works excellent for this and is rather quiet. It also handles DVD rather well and can pass the dolby signal directly to its spdif. If the Fry's 2677 barebones sytem includes the motherboard for that price I would say go ahead and get one. The system itself is a rather competent web, dvd, word processign machine that takes up no space and just works.

As for the DC-DC poer supplies apparently procase will not sell them seperatly. I would imagine thoguh that there has to be another suppleir out there.

Let me know if you have any more questions.

I'm actually pretty excited to build this system, I already ordered the case with the mini-itx mobo. I bought the 8X DVD-Rom from a guy from ebay, and luckily included the adapter for normal IDE!. Cool, and not as cheap as reldridg, but not bad. I paid $32 brand new with the adapter included. I already have the memmory 256MB(I think I have the 30mm long, like www.mini-itx.com says) I have the harddrive a Samsung 40GB, but I might upgrade to a 100GB if DVR uses a lot. That's it I think I'm all set. Also I bought a wireless keyboard with integrated trackball, and maybe I will buy a trackman live for those moments that I don't need the keyboard.

Software based, I'm planning to install win XP with mediabox and timeshifter (have to use them to decide which one to choose). Also, all my mp3 collection will go there, and also I'm planning to add emulators for Nintendo, SNES, Playstation for the kids. Also my few collection of Divx.

It will be called the "YORCH's MEDIA STATION" :)

I'll let you guys know when I have pictures and when I have it ready.

Here is an interesting review of the Via Eden MB from an embedded system vendor. Their use of Compactflash as a boot devise is interesting. Also, you get a closeup of the DC to DC power supply.

Has anyone added pcmcia slots to an ITX system? (or is it feasable?) I would think 4 slots would significantly add to flexibility such as adding midi, usb 2.0, modem, wireless ethernet etc interfaces.

Thanks for any suggestions.

For people looking for a DC to DC convertor for a custom ITX setup you might want to check here.

http://www.timeline-inc.com/arrival.html

At the top (today at least) they list a 57 watt UPS but it sounds like it was an internal ups/power setup like some POS systems use. At 57 watts it is not real powerful but if I am not mistaken the DC to DC in the Cupid 2677 cases is just over 50W so it should be perfect for an ITX setup.
