What ever happened to the thread about the Barbie PC? Its like its disappeared from the face of the planet. Anyone know if these are still sold as barebones from the refurb places? (I think it was going for like 40-80 for the case+mb?) I need to build a basic pc 800Mhz or faster for sub 300 for the mom ;) Any other suggestions would be welcomed

Directron http://www.directron.com/barebone1.html has the Barbie PC for $49 plus shipping. Downside for your application is the fastest these support is a Celeron 533, but I have built several of these for friends and they are not bad little machines. You'll need to replace the motherboard battery, as nearly all of mine have seemed like a dead m'board, but was just an exhausted battery.

TigerDirect http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/searchtools/search.asp?mnf=1448&cat=06 has a littler wintergreen box, 1GHz Celeron, 128 meg ram, etc. for $379

(I am not affiliated with any of these folks, just found them to be good suppliers.)

I haven't actually tested it, but there's no reason why the Via C3 600-900 MHz, or an overclocked Evergreen Spectra 600 shouldn't work in the Barfie. Not much of an improvement, or possibly even worse than a Mendocino Celeron 533, but the Via C3 is dirt cheap ($20~$40) and widely available.

Barfie's are still available in Santa Clara at Surplus Computers.

Fry's has the little VIA 800mhz C3 ITX motherboards for around 120. This thing is hyper tiny! Even the box it comes in is small! includes just about everthing you need. Kind of like Hamburger Helper Add HD, RAM, PS , OS and have a micro small computer.

The EPIA 800 board at Fry's seemed to have a soldered C3 CPU. It lowers costs, but limits upgradability.

Directron has the case only on sale for $2.99 The optional PSU is another $20 bucks. Sounds like they're a little beat up, but for 3 bucks....

I am working over a Gateway Astro (same motherboard as Barbie) and I need a BIOS. Does Barbie's bios allow you to disable onboard peripherials like the modem (lightning bad). Could someone make a backup of Barbie and shot me an email or a link? coughlio(at)hotmail.com. Gateway does not understand why I would want to disable anything (they carefully removed all the options except change date and time from the reference BIOS). Their tech support recommended I remove the modem (soldered to the motherboard of course). You would have my undying gratitude.
