T-200
Is it time for a new Forum?

I've been lurking since the early I-Opener days, but kept to myself until now.

I had to work in Ohio this week and left an E-mail for Medina Tech. He said stop by - so I spent a couple of hours today looking at his toys and picking up my T-200.

Great toy - get one if you haven't already.

The seller is a great guy who just wants to spread these around. He says he started with 1600 and couldn't sell them at $25.00. He dropped them to $14.99 and they are flying out of his shop - he's down to around 700.

The thing that impressed me was the amount of time he spends to make sure these work before he ships. He had a stack that "didn't meet his standards" sitting by the door. He says he's going to dump these in groups of 10 - 20 when he starts to run low on 100% units.

He doesn't pull any punches and admits that some of the screens have scratches, but I saw stack of units that he had culled for bad screens, so you can expect a reasonably good one.

I've only had mine for a few hours, I'll post more after I've played with it some more. So far, I;m having fun with the handwriting recognition and the pre-loaded games.

The ones I have are pretty good. $15.00 is a good price for them.

I took one of them apart just to see what is inside. The dx2 is a 40MHz and is soldered to the motherboard. The drive is a very tiny 1.8" model. It does have the standard 44pin connector on it.

You can remove the HD from the bottom of the case by removing the one screw. Also there is the cmos/date battery (which is dead in 2 of mine). Just pull straight up on the metal lever and it comes out easily.

I connected it up to my computer in a usb external case, and it came up no problem. It is a 80meg drive. Doublespace is running on it.

Now I have an easy way of putting files on it.

If anyone wants pictures, let me know before I put it back together. I only have it partially disassembled though.

By the way, could you tell us what a T-200 is ? I've searched in the whole BBS and couldn't find any information about it.
Are there any links to more information/specs ?
Thanks a lot

Look at the thread above this one about the ibm 730. At the end of the thread they are talking about the t-200. It is a toshoiba dynapad t-200. They are color (640x480x256) pen based tablets with a 486dx2-40, 80m hd and a couple pcmcia slots. I had a monochrome one a while back. They are pretty solid but not terribly fast. Best left with win3.x or something of that vintage.

I guess this must be a Toshiba Dynapad T200, the 2nd-generation pen-based slate machine built by Toshiba way back in 1993-94, just as the first pen-computing bubble was dying down (Everybody and his uncle jumped on pen computing, and companies like Go, Momenta, General Magic, as well as respectable corporates like IBM and Toshiba, had huge pen-computing programs going on, which were all killed off by 1995).

But I digress. The T200 was the successor to the T100x, which had a 386sx CPU and retailed for $4395 (no typo). I got my T100x (actually, a pair) in 1995 at an early online auction (OnSale) for $150 each. I've used it for some years for playing board games, primarily chess and scrabble, but its limited CPU power and small hard disk (originally 40 MB, now 85 MB) limited its usability.

The T200 was nearly identical to the T100x, but had a 486DX2/40, so it was less sluggish. But the HD limitation and short battery life remained. Some parts are interchangable, but not the battery or the pen.

With a PCMCIA 802.11 card, these could probably be used for some Home Control/X10 applications as a 'fat' remote.

They were nice machines for their time, but don't come close to a Panasonic CF01, which incidentally was one of the last machines from the 'first-wave' of pen computing, debuting in 1995 if I remember right.

The big problem with the T100x is that the pen is an active pen, requiring 4 tiny watch batteries. They run out fairly quickly, so there is a recurring cost to running this unit.

I ordered and received 2. Both good condition; one screen has a very small/irrelevant scratch. I wish there were batteries available, as well. The seller was very professional and very fast.

I hope to try this out as an automation remote, maybe instead of using Audrey (though I didn't realize before that "pen-based" meant you could not use your finger, it's still lightweight and reasonably sleek, especially for $15). Does anyone know if the screen and drivers pose a barrier to installing linux?

dozens, no it was unsucessfull for midiori on netier cause kernel compiled with mdoc has trouble reonizing the doc even i tried 3 diffrent size doc chip and i feelsthat newer kernel after 2.4.8 is screwed on doc2000 support
but i think it will work on t200 as it use real hard drive instead of disk on chip :)
but one caveat is we have to figure out to set up the touchscreen under linux(don't know what brand touchscreen was used in these t-200?)
funny thing is t-200 sound more like the movie terminator 2(yep terminator 3 is coming soon!)

I need another toy like I need a hole in the head, but for this price I guess I'll have to get one.

I've been thinking about how to get software and drivers on it. Does Win3.1 have a terminal program? If so, you could just use a null modem cable to another machine and use a xmodem or zmodem transfer. You could also remove the drive and attach it to another machine and put the files directly on the drive.

The drive is a special 1.8" drive, with a standard 2.5" notebook connector. However, it is right-angled, so most 2.5" to 3.5" adapters won't fit. You can rig one up with a few flex-cables, etc. It's probably easier to boot into DOS and use intersvr/interlnk. Resize and repartition with fips, partition magic (pqmagict.exe) and/or edpart. Use a loadlin-based install (slackware can do this) from DOS.

The main hassle is that 85 MB is too small for all the temporary space needed for these tricks. In the early days of Linux, there was a distribution from spain/portugal that included kernel 1.0.9, X and gcc that fit on a 40 MB umsdos file system. Dig around to locate that image, there's no reason it won't work. It's available as a single ZIP file that is simply unzipped into a dos directory called \linux.

I just got the 2 T200's I ordered, and they are Very Very Cool Units.
I am very Impressed with the Color Display Quality and runs very fast with the Win 3.1 Pen version on it. Actually it seems usuable with Windows 3.1, and there is literelly 1000's of great programs to work on it already, so I am going to do some research on the Internet and see what I can dig up to do the following :

1. Run some type on a PCMCIA Network Card (WIndows 3.1 Drivers needed for it also )
2. Install some Upgrade to Windows 3.1 to allow TPC/IP networking.
3. Install Calmira, this upgrades 3.1 to work almost identical to windows 95.

Does anyone know of any older PCMCIA NIC's that would work with Win 3.1 ?

the Orinoco silver/gold wireless card _should_ work, as they do have DOS drivers.
you can download the Microsoft Network Client for DOS, which should take care of the TCP/IP.

I'm attempting to configure my Orinoco wireless card to work on a T200, but so far, I've had no luck. My memory of the old DOS days is pretty flakey (I drank more back then), and I'm having a hard time remembering how to do this old DOS type stuff.

If anyone can help, please let me know. My kid wants his new Dynapad on the network!

The 3Com 3cxe589et 10BaseT NIC with X-Jack RJ42 connector should work. This NIC is my favorite for notebooks and handhelds, since it has no dongle to break and fits in a single slot, and is well-supported in Linux and most flavors of Windoze (useful for dual-boot configurations).

The unit is Fantastic !!! Do I sound Happy (Like a Kid with a new Toy)!!!
Has anyone played with the pen software, very impressive for the age of this unit.
I loaded mine up with some older Win 3.1 games (There are thousands avialiable as freeware) then using a CF Card, and with my CF to PCMCIA adaptor transfered software and games to the unit. I totally enjoyed the experiance of sitting on the couch playing games with the pen as a controller. The unit operates very fast with the old Windows 3.1 software.
BTW: My Battery holds an amazing strong charge lasting almost 3 continus hours before it needs a recharge. Can't believe it only cost $15 plus the $6 battery.. What a deal !!!

From what I read Calmira gives Windows 3.1 the same GUI as Windows 95.
Drag and drop, File Manager, and some other nice features.

Adam714,
I screwed my order up trying to get the discounted shipping on multiple items, but I emailed Tom at Medinatech and he fixed the order. Basically he charges $10 for the first unit and $1.5 for any other item added to the order..
BTW: You'll love this unit, I am enjoying the whole windows 3.1 experiance all over again (Grin..).. I am so impressed with built in Microsoft Note Manager (A MS Outlook type program) and pen capabilities , I may start to use it in the field as I work, to keep appts and customer contact information.
I can upload data to my main pc through the CF card..
This unit was actually designed to be used in the field for data collection, customer contact, order taking.. There is a program already loaded in it, I have not played with it yet. But the Pen functions (Writing converted to text) is way better then my Fijitsu Pen Tablet running windows 98 ? Go Figure..

I'm not sure it will do very well running windows 95 like some want to do, as all the RAM it has is 12MB and 80MB Hard Drive. But there is so much cool software already written for win 3.1, 1000's to choose from, why even try to change it.. It's a great Toy just as it is. And very fast with it older OS..

I got windows 95 installed onto one of my units with ***working pen drivers*** AND pen services 2.0
It's a bit slower than the win3.1 that's was on it (to be expected), but still quite usable. I'll write up a how-to and post it on my website along with the required files needed to get the pen working.

Thought I'd put you all up date about a few things that have changed for us.

Unfortunately, we've had to raise our shipping prices due to an increase by our packing material supplier. I've done my best to keep it reasonable....and for those of you who have bought from us, you already know we do everything in our power to take care of our customers!!

Also, I don't know how long we'll have these available.....I have two different companies that are making offers on all of the pentops and accessories we have available. If that comes to pass, I'll be sure to post a "last minute, buy what you can get" note on here.

More pentops and accessories will be posted this afternoon with the new shipping prices after our eBay store clears.

Thanks again!!!

Care to tell us how you got 95 going, or where you got pen services, etc. from?

I just got my units in today, very impressed. One is like brand new. The other is a little rough, but acceptable. Neat machine. I could almost see using it as-is, but the handwriting recognition is S-L-O-W to translate. If it was a little lighter or a little smaller, I could see carrying it around with me. Has a spot for a shoulder strap though. I could see all sorts of cool uses for this thing.

Also, does anyone think a Compact flash to 44pin IDE adaptor would be a good replacement for the HD? A 256MB card and an adaptor probably wouldn't break the bank...

<<<Care to tell us how you got 95 going>>>

First, let me stress that upgrading a dynapad to win95 is NOT reccomended unless you really need to run 32bit software. Win95 is DOG SLOW on a dynapad (we're talking 40Mhz here, not 400Mhz or 1.4Ghz!). Win95 *does* run on it, but it's a bit painfull. I set up one of mine to run win95 so I could install my wireless network card and run netstumbler for wardriving use.

Installation was a pain, but that was mostly due to the stupid mistakes I kept making. What's needed is a compact flash card and CF to PCMCIA adapter. I did my upgrade using a NON UPGRADE version of windows. I used win95B (OSR2), but I would reccomend using version A if you can find a copy, since windows gets progressivly larger with each release. You'll also need a keyboard (PS/2 connector) and a *serial* mouse.

First you'll need to delete enough stuff from the dynapad to make room for the install. so put the CF onto the adapter, and move your windows directory to the CF card (in case you want to revert to win3.1). You may then remove or move the following directories to the CF card

RYKOFF - this is the database from the company that used to have the machine. You can delete it. Note: the data is not encrypted, so if you're currious to look at the data, it's pretty easy to do.

Games - if you dont plan on keeping the games, delete it. Otherwise move it to the CF card so you can copy it back later

LL5 - this is laplink. Since we can transfer stuff via CF card, you don't really need this.

This should make enough room to install W95. Now, put the CF card into your CF reader on your desktop and move your windows folder to your desktop. If you don't do this, when you try to install windows the installer will see this folder on the card and think you're upgrading and not installing from scratch.

Copy the W95 install files onto it. Pop the CF into the adapter, plug it in to the dynapad and it should be seen as a drive. Now, bootu pu the dynapad, edit your autoexec.bat to rem out the line at the end that starts windows, and rem out the ramdrive line to free up some extra memory. reboot. go to the drive the CF card is in. Note: If you removed the RAMDRIVE, the drive letter of the CF card will move up one letter since the RAMDRIVE is no longer there. Now, just run the win95 install as usual. Pick a compact instalation, or custom install, and install as few options as possible.

<<< or where you got pen services, etc. from?>>>

Once you get win95 up and going...

I've put the proper drivers up for download at http://toyhacking.com/dynapad unzip these and copy to your CF card.

Go to CONTROL PANEL | ADD REMOVE PROGRAMS
click the WINDOWS SETUP tab
Click HAVE DISK
navigate to the place on the CF card where you put the Pen Sevices files
check the box next to pen services, click ok, reboot when prompted.

When Windows boots up you will not get a choice of Dynapad.
select the Wacom SD510C (you should be able to choose any tablet).
Start regedit (Be very carefull while in the regedit.)
go to the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\VxD folder
and delete the VPEND folder.
go to the regedit file menu and select import
then select the toshiba.reg file
then also import the barrelev.reg file

now exit regedit and copy vpendc.vxd to Windows\system\vmm32

reboot, and your pen should be working.

Have fun

Sweet! I'm had already started win95 from the CF...

Another tip; you'll probably not have enough XMS to get setup rolling, just rem out smart drive in autoexec, and your win95 install will take off.

I don't need speed, and I think I'll be getting the memory upgrade, so... Thanks a lot!

<<< the handwriting recognition is S-L-O-W to translate. >>>

you can change the delay time for the translation. Basicaly, it waits a specific period of time after you stop writing before it translates. This way, it doesn't try to translate while your'e in the middle of a sentence (or word). You AREN'T going to get it to translate much faster that it already does (linux may be faster, but I have no experience there). Win95 pen services seems to be even slower.

<<<Also, does anyone think a Compact flash to 44pin IDE adaptor would be a good replacement for the HD? A 256MB card and an adaptor probably wouldn't break the bank...>>>

Don't do this if you're running a Windows OS. Compact Flash memory bits can only be written to a certain number of times. While this number is very high (in the 100K+ to one million range) it is meant to be used in applications like digital cameras where you would need to take hunreds of thousands of pictures to wear it out. However, since the Dynapad has limited memory, it'll use the swap file like crazy. It'll burn out your CF card in a matter of days, if not hours.

There is a company that makes a solid state drive with a 44pin IDE connector on it that uses memory that can be rewritten many more more times. Can't remember the URl at the moment. but I seem to remember a link on the page that allowed you to request "eval units". I assume that if you fill out the form with the right answers and make it look like your a MFG, you may be able to score a free unit or two. Do this at your OWN RISK. YMMV and all those other disclaimers apply here.

I've already GOT the mem upgrade, and it's STILL slow. Apps take 10 seconds to 30 seconds to open sometimes. Internet Explorer does work, but it's also dog slow. Gonna try getting my 802.11b card working in DOS and try loading a browser in win 3.1 to see if i can get the speed any better.

Is the error something like "Can not read from drive X: please make sure the disk is in the drive, and the door is closed" ??

I got this error quite a few times when I attempted to install a copy of Win95A that we found on some floppies and copied to the CF card. My theory is that the floppy disk based install of W95a can't be copied to a single directory and installed. Perhaps it's because of the weird 1.8k formatting of the win95A disks or something. I ended up just using an ORS2 version from a CD, which worked just fine.

On 2 of mine the CMOS battery was dead so I had to hit enter when it booted. Also, could yours be one that was last used with an external monitor? I fiddled with the settings on one of my dynapads and I think nothing came up unless I had the external monitor attached.

When I made my order, since I was concerned about the same possible problem, I ordered 3, as I figured at least 1 would be useable, just like with the parts audreys a while back. Fortunately, all 3 dynapads worked (and all 3 audreys worked for that matter too).

Maybe open up the little panel on the back and try reseating the hard drive? Good luck.

I tried external video, external keyboard, hitting the reset button, reseating hard drive, ac adapter without battery, battery without av, both.

I get nothing. i can't believe this. Am i the only one who got hosed for $32?

I guess i got one of the ones that were "sitting by the door"

Did you try contacting Tom at Medinatech ? He's been pretty cool about things so far, and his ad doesn't say AS-IS anywhere. Give him a call or shoot him an email. My bet is that he'll replace your unit.

adam148 - I'd really try to get in touch with Tom about the dead? unit. He was really cool when I was there and he made a point that he stood behind his product - give him a chance. We need more people like him and BadFlash, let's not go off and dump on him for a possible mistake.

I sent tom an e-mail and am hoping for the best. I'd be more than happy to ship the defective unit back to him. I do understand that these things happen.

Win95b running, pen working finally...

Sure is slow. Working on wireless now.

My hope is that I can hack down 95 to fit in 75MB with some sort of web browser (maybe Arachne) so I can get rid of that damn doublespace.

I've used many machines this speed with this much RAM... it should be way faster. It's doublespace that's slowing it down.

you ever tried win98lite program that really does trimming and paring the os down toas small as 16mb ,it had been done for websurfer, iopener, etc see the search topic with keyword win98lite
ive tried that and it does works on my laptop and the pentuim 133 seems to run faster

yeah 80mb is more than you need to install Win98lite with the W95 core with drivespace, although of course the challenge would be to put this physically on the HD.
It seems you can't hook up the HD to a desktop ? Can you maybe boot from the CF ?
$15 sure aint' much dough !

Happy to report; Deleted help files, all accessories, etc. from Win95b, was able to decompress the drive. It's like a whole new machine now, only takes a second or two to bring up My Computer and navigate. I got wireless working too.

I hope someone comes up with a linux solution for my second unit ;)

Just a quick post guys....I guess it's in my definition of "as is". The pentops are advertised as working....if they don't work when you receive them, I'll replace them.

Actually the disclaimer protects us from novices who try to reload them or don't have any idea of what they are buying. From what I've read on this board....you guys know twice as much about these things than I do!!

BTW....met vwbug19 today......great guy!!!

I've got w95b and an uncompressed drive on one of mine, with an ORiNOCO wireless card. It works, but IE is s-l-o-w. pretty much unusable. I only notice a very small speed improvement with the uncompressed drive. Any suggestions of to what browser will work better, and how to remove IE from it to free up space?

Also, has anyone got an Orinoco (Lucent) wireless card working on one of the DOS/W3.1 units? I've called ORIiNOCO tech support a bunch of times, and they're pretty much useless. Half the tech guys there have never used DOS, some act like they've never even heard of it. I get answers like "Well, we have DOS drivers, but we don't have Windows 3.1 drivers..." I'd really like to get the wireless card working on one of the DOS/win3.1 units because IE is nice and zippy on those units.

...or, anyone know of an 802.11b card that has decent DOS/3.1 drivers??

Here's a possible alternative for some that don't want to use the slower Windows 95/98 OS.
This thing works so fast in it's native Windows 3.1, I'm just going to upgrade to Windows for Work Groups 3.11, then setup TCP/IP on it, with an acceptable browser.
I can then use my 3com Etherlink PC card (Works in DOS mode).
Here's a cool link I found with instructions on setting up TCP/IP in WFWG 3.11..
http://www.yale.edu/pclt/WINWORLD/WFWG311.HTM
Also here is a link to Calmira an unupgrade for Windows 3.1, makes it work like Windows 95. Looks like a clone of Windows 95 (But Only runs 16 bit applications)
http://www.calmira.org/index.htm
BTW: I started using this thing on the road to do scheduling with, works great !!
Very Impressed... !!!

Mmm...

I really don't think it's that slow at all, and the drive decompression made an absolutely HUGE improvement (Boot time in half, and instead of 30 seconds to open My Computer, almost instant). Maybe you have another problem?

I've just got the base 4MB so far too.

I had to stick with IE 3.0; opera complained, then crashed and burned, 5.5 complained a lot, and 4.0 didn't seem happy. The wireless card I'm using are just antique proprietary 1Mb things. It's pretty responsive crusing the network. Still haven't gotten it actually browsing the web though. I can't find a proxy server that works for beans.

I'd do WFW on my second unit and compare, but I can't find an 'abandonware' site that has a useable copy anymore. Next thing will probably be 98lite once I get the RAM.

Looking for troubleshooting advice with the batteries. I bought two batteries (they're both li-ion), and have two otherwise perfectly working T200 units. The batteries appear to charge up briefly, followed by a green "fully charged" light. But when I try to run the unit off the battery alone, it starts to boot up for a couple seconds, does a lot of beeping, and then shuts down. The MaxTime utility also does not give any info about the battery (it says "n/a"). Both the batteries do this on both the units.

Any ideas? Are they just DOA?

Both of mine are LiIon; one runs for 3 hours (1.5-2 with heavy use) and the other runs for 2 hours (1 with heavy use).

I'm pretty impressed; I was expecting marginal batteries, but the one seems to perform as-new.

intrseting feature with those t200 is in win3.1 under main/control panel rotate screen icon that let you flip sreen in 3 positions(of course you have to restart windows after setting that, yep that sucks compared to win98/me/2k/xp that doesnt requires restarting)
and as for pc card my adivice is choose only 16bit pc card type only and nothing more!
since this machines were built befor 96' and does not support 32bit cardbus! same for my compaq lte 5300 series laptop which i tried to use ibm ieee1394 firewire pc card which is 32bit type damn!

:)
im configuring the pc card nic either eigernet 10mb or d-link dfe-670txd 10/100mb and a little trouble configuring it for dos tcp/ip stack
i do have a rare old desqview/x window 2.2 that i used on older laptop with dos tcp/ip :)

ameyerstein...did the batteries work when you got them? All batteries are charged when they leave here, but unfortunately we do not have the time to test them. They've been running around 2.5 hours on an average. If you aren't getting a reading on the battery life indicator....they may be bad.

Email us about them....and we'll take care of you on Mon

It may not be a battery problem, but a problem with the unit itself. I have a battery, which works fine on some of my machines but not on one. I'm not sure if any more of my units have this problem, since I've really only tried 4 of them so far. The one that the battery doesn't work on has the same problem as the problem you described.

hey, can you send one to mikehell-linux@kontrol.net? I have no limit on my email account (I run my own servers). Then I can put it up on my server so BusD can download his "legal replacement copy" from there.

<<<Does anybody have scanned manuals for the Toshiba T-200CS Pentop?>>>

I ordered a set of manuals, they should arrive on Tuesday. If I can get my scanner working, I'll scan them in and post them along with a copy of the companion diskette. I do have a copy of a companion disk and manuals for another Toshiba laptop that may prove usefull (one of the manuals is about the card manager software.

<<<whoo! tcp/ip now works on t200 with wfwg 3.11 i can ftp or telnet or ping to internet, all i do is get a good small web browser beside netscape and ie>>>

What network card are you using? I can't find one that works in w3.11. Looking for wireless, if at all possible. Most of my PCMCIA network stuff is newer, maybe I need to find some older stuff.

I've found that IE4.0 works much better on the unit I upgraded to W95 than IE3.01

There's a few quirks with the win95 unit, but they are probably easily fixed.
Problem #1: What pen gesture do you use to send a Carriage Return? I can enter a URL in the browser, but then can't hit the "enter" key. I never thought I'd be wanting to have that stupid "go" button that IE5 has.
Problem #2: If you don't shut down the system properly, the next time you boot, you'll get "windows was not properly shut down. blah blah... Press any key to run scandisk..." Of course, at this time, the pen drivers aren't loaded yet, so you can not press a key. If yo leave it long enough, scandisk will start, but this is a royal pain. There's got to be an easy way to turn this off.

another wfwg3.11 is on the way to him :)
oh yes the pc card nic was eigerlabs epx-et 10bt ethernet my advice is screw other tcp/ip proggies and when setting up ,don't set up other software yet first transfer the nesscary drivers for nic and the os and the microsoft tcp/ip-32 3.11(tcp32.exe) via serial(slow) or via cf card(i used sandisk 128mb cf card in pc card adapter and a sandiskmate usb adapter) or via hard drive swap,do a wfwg3.11 upgrade(keyboard required and serial mouse optional since pen function will be dead during install(no dos pen driver))) and install the nic pc card drivers(use ndis2 or ndis3 only) and reboot, pay attention to dos loading of driver if not check the irq and io it must not use irq 5 and io 220-227(com3) then it should works and now move tcp32.exe to a temp dir or \tcp dir and run tcp32.exe it will unzip then go to network setup and select drivers then add protocol and select unused(firstone on top of list) and point it to \tcp and you know what to do next and dont forget to highlight microsoft tcp/ip-32 3.11 and hit setup button ,configure as nessacarry and again exit win and reboot then when your back in win, hook up the keyboard find the main icon and open, choose msdos and type in ipconfig and you'll see result and try ping to a ip address or name of site that is outside your home(internet) if it works then be happy !and Whoo! didja! and opera for win3.1 does works

Yes it is. I've been building an image for the Gateway Connected Touchpad off and on
for the past couple of months. There is more info in the GCT forum here.
(Unfortunately, my site is down from all of the electrical activity in central florida
this weekend. Plus the fact that I'm out of town for training :( ).

My mention of peanut was a faux pas. Maybe jailbait/peewee or something from
http://www.linux.org/dist/list.html (minimalist). Midori would be interesting,
but the r/o nature of the install is not necessary here since the pentop has a HD.

Received my 2 units today, and just started testing one of them.

1) Wow! Windows 3.1 on this machine, even with the base RAM of 4 MB, runs more snappily than Windows ME on my Toshiba Satellite 1805 Pentium-III/800 with 256 MB RAM. No exaggeration!

2) 3.3v FPM IC DRAM cards for the Toshiba 4600 work fine in the T200. I just tested a Simple Tech 8 MB card, and it's working fine.

3) The default desktop settings are messed up. Try setting the border width to 3 pixels, icon spacing to 75 pixels, grid to 1 pixel and the color scheme to anything but Rykoff (they must've been color blind or something). I personally prefer Arizona, but you can easily develop a custom color scheme from Main->Control Panel->Colors.

4) Move the MS notebook icon from the startup folder to the MS tools folder.

5) Of course, there are 1000s of games out there. For a high quality scrabble player, search Google for 'Networdz'. For an outstanding Anagram and Scrabble word builder, search Google for 'Lexpert'. There are versions for Win 3.1.

Anybody with any idea for mapping software that will fit in 80 MB, say with a limited streets database (like 1 state)?

To connect the drive to a standard 3.5" to 2.5" notebook IDE adapter board, you need an I-Opener-type flipped cable with a female IDC connector at both ends, and a 44-pin dual-row mini-berg strip (with 2.0 mm spacing) to mate one female end of the I-Opener cable to the female connector on the 3.5" to 2.5" adapter board.

My system recognizes it as a master drive with no jumpers on the 4 pins near pins 1-2. It's an Integral Peripherals 1885 81-MB IDE/ATA drive.

I got the entire image out for use as a reference backup image using Powerquest Drive Image.

The 16 MB 3.3v IC DRAM for the Toshiba 4600 also tests fine (no surprise). I'm using some generic/off-brand type called 'Ambus'. Although the specs say that 20 MB is the max, I'm not so sure. I believe it's worth trying with the relatively rare 32 MB parts, like the Kingston KTT4600/32 or similar (I don't have any of those).

On the DOS games question, I believe that the answer is no they can not be played with out a keyboard. I remember them very well myself, some pretty good DOS based games.
Why they are on the unit is a mystery, because these are DOS games. There are still like millions of windows based games that will run jusy fine on the T200. I found a bunch on the shareware websites. Its a great game computer if nothing else. But my ultimate goal is to use it as a home automation controller.

MEMORY....

I find there are several websites that sell 16MB Cards for the Dynapad (About $80.00) very expensive.
So if it possible to get 16MB RAM on a RAM CARD. I also wonder if it's possible to solder a chip or two? in the existing 8MB RAM CARD to make it 16MB..

Just curious, and I don't yet have the courage to rip open one of the 8MB RAM Cards open to see if there is a posibility to replace the 8MB chip with a 16MB chip..

It would sure be nice to have 20MB RAM, or even 32 MB RAM as another said the MOBO could address..

Regarding RAM, don't bother trying to hack an 8 MB card by soldering. 16 MB cards for the T4600 are readily available for $10 or less on EBay, and I believe these are similar if not identical to those for the T4500/T1910/T1960/T4700...

I have the 16 MB card working in the T200, 100% verified. Anything above that was speculation on my part, but it's worth trying if somebody has one lying around. 32 MB 3.3v IC DRAM cards were rare, but not unknown. I have several for Thinkpads, but they're generally incompatible with Toshibas.

rlyacht,

You will have to delete a minium of 12 MB to remove the Compressed drive, but its not gonna leave you much space to run any more applications.
The command is executed from DOS, called DRVSPACE.EXE..
Follow the prompts to decompress the drive..
You could delete all the Games, and the Rikoff? program (forgot the name), maybe you could then run it in non-compressed mode, and it will be about 30% faster for most programs loading, but really depends on what you want from it.
You can also delete some of the DOS files, if you know what your doing to save some space.
I would suggest not doing so, mine runs very fast with the speedy windows 3.11.
The key for more speed is really the RAM, the standard 4MB is slow, but the added 8MB RAM Card make it really speedy.
I just upgraded mine to WFWG 3.11 OS, so I can put it on my Network.
I am quite happy with the speed of it with the compressed drive..

The 8 MB card is a Simple Technology STT4600/8 for a T4600. The 16 MB card is an Ambus 432V, pulled from a working T4600. Both work fine in the T200cs, so direct equivalence is established.

What I don't know for sure yet (I believe so, but have no HW to confirm):

1) Are the IC DRAM cards for the T4600 equivalent to those for the other Toshibas (T1910/T1960...) ?
2) Was a 32 MB card ever offered for the T4600?

An affirmative answer to 2), followed by a simple test of that card in a T200cs, would settle the issue directly.

rlyacht,
It's pretty easy to upgrade your existing Windows 3.1 to WFWG 3.11.
1. Just copy the 8 WFWG floppy disks to a CF card.
2. Make a seperate Directory for each floppy disk on the CF card.
(I think you can even copy all 8 disks into one directory, don't remember for sure, either way works)
3. Then plug that CF card in the T200.
4. Goto a DOS prompt and run setup from the first floppy disks directory.
It will prompt you for each needed floppy (In its own directory) as it installs.

It will upgrade the T200 to WFWG 3.11 and keep all the original Pen stuff and everything.
And BINGO !! You now have a networkable T200.
You will also need a compatable 16bit PCMCIA Card.. Remember 16bit, the newer PC-cards will not work.
These older PCMCIA Network cards are "Dirt Cheep" on ebay, about $10.
I used a old 3Com Etherlink III card for mine, looked on 3Com's website and found drivers for DOS and WFWG's.

On a previous post VWbug found a site you can get the TCP/IP drivers also.
http://www.public.iastate.edu/~jbalvanz/tcphowto.htm

And also on a previous post I gave two websites where you can download a newer GUI that makes it run pretty much like windows 95 (ONly 16 bit applications will run).
http://www.calmira.org/index.htm

Here's a cool link I found with instructions on setting up TCP/IP in WFWG 3.11..
http://www.yale.edu/pclt/WINWORLD/WFWG311.HTM

For my application, Network access, and home automation controls, WFWG's is a very fast OS for the little T200

On Decompressing the hard drive:

Just delete that Rykoff directory, that thing is HUGE !! It's like a 60 Megabyte database..
Then delete the Games directory for another 8 Meg savings..
After that you can run drvspace to remove compression.
And your windows 3.11 will be even more speedy..

I stuck in an old 340 MB PC Card hard drive in the PCMCIA Slot so I now have about 500MB of usuable Hard Drive space.
I wonder if there is a way to boot from the PCMCIA Card slot, that would be really coool.

There may be copyright issues with posting the HD image with Win95 and pen services. I would suggest following the instructions given by mikehell above, it worked like a charm. It is possible to install everything without a floppy or serial mouse.

The procedure, in summary:

1. Make a backup of the drive image using your favorite method, using an 3.5"->2.5" adapter cable on a PC.
2. Go into DOS and delete the directories \rykoff, \games and \ll5.
3. Uncompress the drive using \dos\drvspace /uncompress (this will take a long time, patience).
4. There will not be enough space to install Windows 95a, even with the compact option. Delete the \windows directory.
5. Edit config.sys and rem out the ramdrive.sys driver (optional, but convenient to do it now). Rem out any references to drivers in \windows, if any. *Do not delete any of the pcmplus3 drivers. They are needed for access to the PCMCIA card during the install process*.
6. Edit autoexec.bat and rem out all references to \windows. Rem out the last line (win).
7. Copy the \cabs directory from the Windows 95a Install CDROM into a PCMCIA ATA flash card or hard disk. This is about 36 MB, so a 32 MB card won't do - I used a 270 MB Type III hard disk.
8. Switch off the t200cs, insert the ATA card and reboot into DOS. Verify that the drive is visible as D: (since ramdrive has been removed).
9. cd D:\cabs and run setup.exe. Choose whatever installation it allows, depending on the disk space. Portable should work, but use compact or custom if there is any problem. Be patient, the install is slow.
10. On rebooting, it should warn you that there is no mouse. Until you get pen services going, the rest of the configuration is done using a keyboard only.
11. From the Control Panel->System->Device Manager->PCMCIA, enable PCMCIA and allow it to load the 32-bit support. Say "Yes" when asked if you're installing through a PCMCIA card and follow the prompts.
12. When you reboot, check Control Panel->System->Device Manager. After removing a possible duplicate entry for the PCMCIA socket, you should have no crosses or exclamations against any device.
13. Using the Pen Services files and the Toshiba Pen Driver downloaded from the link supplied by mikehell, follow his procedure exactly to install pen support.
14. Upon rebooting, Windows 95 should now be fully operational and you can now install additional programs or components as necessary.

I got both of my units today.

The screens on both units are in excellent shape and they both work fine. The power jack is intermittent on one unit, but is an easy fix. I am missing one pen and wrote a note to Tom to send me a pen. By the way, the battery packs are $150 at Batteries Plus and even more at other outlets. I most likely will order more batteries and other parts. I am very happy with my purchase!

It's simple really. Install Win95 on the drive while it is still compressed.

After installation, delete:

- Online Services
- All hlp files
- DOS directory
- After upgrading your PCMCIA drivers, DOS PCMCIA card folder (Forget name)
- IE (Whopping 1-2MB)
- Wallpaper
- Weird files you find in the root directory (I had some kind of swap file left over from win 3.1 - Don't forget to turn on hidden files)
- Anything else you find that you don't need.

Don't forget, you need the drive tools, so keep those. You should now be able to decompress the drive with drive tools. It takes about 5-8 hours (I let it go while I slept) to decompress.

adam714, you not paying attention to previous post from me, you have to to custom setup instead of express setup and unselect those you don't need like charcter map editor, paint, desktop wallpaper, and several other that is not specfic to the t200
i did get 50mb easy long time ago
btw win3.11 takes up 6mb and wfwg 3.11 takes up 6-10mb and win95 orignal edition takes up 50-100mb and winxp takes up to close 1 gig bitching codes!!!!so... im working on getting peeweelinux working with pwlconfig to transfer it to 128mb cf in sansdisk sddr-31 usb reader on my linux machine and that bitchin' usb keep hanging(usb 1.0 is unreliable)

Use Windows 95a, not OSR2. The compact install is well under 50 MB with 95a, and it can be made even smaller with a custom install. Before installing, delete everything except \dos and \pcmplus3 - the free space should be in the ballpark of 75 MB, which is sufficient. You'll have 20-30 MB left over after the install depending on what you've selected.

Also, don't bother copying \cabs into C:; you can start the install directly from the ATA card, but it may take longer if it's a type III hard disk, which is usually dog slow.

Switching topics: The Rand-McNally Streetfinder GPS seems eminently matched to this - I got the idea that a PCMCIA->compact flash adapter, in conjunction with a 128 or 256 MB CF card as drive D:, can be conveniently used to store the installed software + limited map information for a few states, and there is no danger of the CF card running through its write cycles - it is used almost like a large ROM disk. Another plus of this setup is that it is more rugged and therefore suitable for automotive use (although drive C: is still going to be rotating and therefore vulnerable to vibrations).

So back to the old car-mounting questions: what's the best deal on goose-neck mounts for the T200 and where is it available retail? Note that there are 3 uncommitted screw mounts at the rear of the unit.

<<<Hey MikeHell,

It's a Lucent ORiNOCO Silver card (formerly known as Wavelan). The Orinoco card is one of the better cards IMHO, with good range and an external antenna port. The "gold" card should work fine as well. I'm not quite sure about the Bronze cards, since they're older and not quite the same. The DELL cards, and I *think* the HP's are actually rebagged Orinocos.

Yes, it's 802.11b

It was a royal pain to get working, but now that I've got it all figgured out, it should be a 10 minute or so install.

I downloaded every driver set and firmware set I could find, tried every combination, and they all kept giving me an error "primary firmware functions incompatible" when I attempted to load the driver. I finnaly got in touch with someone at Orinoco who sent me a set of drivers, but he led me astray when he insisted that I use the ODI drivers and not the PACKET drivers. I followed his advice, and did get the card working in DOS (was able to PING), but no-go in windows. I tried the packet drivers in the file he sent me and "ta-da!" they worked. Then I just found an old copy of the trumpet winsock, loaded that in and I was off and running. My machine was upgraded to WFW 3.11 in an attempt to get this working, but this driver set and trumpet should work just fine in W3.1 for pen that's on these units.

I loaded IE 3.01, which works OK, but it's S-L-O-W. I think it's due to the slow graphics on the video card, as I can see images very slowly draw on the screen. The linux-hacker website main page took FOREVER to load. I'll do more experimenting with browsers later.

<<<Hey, mikehell, can I recommend that you make yourself a legal backup copy of DOS 6.22 and put it somewhere where I can't accidentally download a copy?>>>

I don't think I *have* a copy of dos 6.22 besides the one that came with the units. Got a couple copies on floppy, but those are thrashed and probably not working. ...or, are you talking about just a copy of the DOS directory from one of the dynapads? I ordered one of those 8.1gb drives for $49, I'm planning on using it to make ghost copies of my units.

OK, I was able to set it up as a car navigation system with Rand-McNally Tripmaker Deluxe 1999 + GPS unit from the Rand-McNally Steetfinder 2000 GPS. Everything is self-contained, with no CDROM required for highway data (if you need city street data, it will prompt for the CDROM).

Procedure for System:

1. Install Windows 95 + Pen services and enable PCMCIA support (as described earlier).
2. Install a Flash card or PCMCIA hard disk in slot 0. Verify that it shows up as D:. You will need about 70 MB free on drive D: and about 10 MB (maybe less, I didn't check exactly) on drive C: for DLLs.
3. Install a PCMCIA SCSI card + external SCSI CDROM in slot 1.
4. Start install of Tripmaker. For the install directory, use 'D:™1999' or similar, *on D: drive*. Choose 'Large/Fast' option, which takes a total of 76 MB. It will proceed to install the software and highway data, about 66MB on drive D: and the rest on drive C:. The city street data remains on CD.
5. Shutdown, and connect the GPS unit from the Streetfinder 2000 GPS kit (various other GPS units are also supported, but I didn't test them. I'll post the full list shortly). The serial connector goes into COM1: and the power tap into the PS2 keyboard socket on the T200.
6. Take it outside with a clear view of the sky. From the GPS->Settings menu, choose 'other NMEA 1.5' and mode 'Monitor'. Leave the other defaults. From GPS->Screen Display, choose 'Navigator View'. Choose GPS->Start. Wait a few minutes till it acquires a few birds.
7. After it locks, choose GPS->Screen Display->Map View. Choose GPS->GPS Recentering (this redraws the map when the cursor goes off the edge).
8. Adjust zoom to a comfortable level of detail. You cannot zoom in greater than level 9 or so without the CDROM.

Mechanical installation:

1. Obtain Radio Shack Gooseneck cellphone mount, Cat 17-510 (on clearance for $9.99 or thereabouts, YMMV).
2. Disassemble the head assembly. Extract the base plate only and file off the protruding plastic ridges so that it is flush with the edges.
3. Attach base plate to T200 back using your favorite adhesive (I used a 2-component epoxy, but it did not hold to the T200. Reverted to future glue, which worked well).
4. Mount rotating head plate onto base plate using the supplied screws (4).
5. Mount Gooseneck assembly at suitable place in car. I have it on the passenger side of the center console, to the right of the Transmission lever (This is the tricky and time-consuming part, take your time to find a good location and mount it firmly. I discarded the supplied mounting screws and used small bolt and nuts).
6. Mount Rotating head plate on the neck of the Gooseneck mount. Place GPS unit on dashboard and secure with velcro.

*WARNING: USE A PASSENGER TO NAVIGATE. KEEP YOUR EYES ON THE ROAD. DO NOT SPEND TIME CONFIGURING AND LOOKING AT THE SCREEN WHILE DRIVING*.

That's it, folks! Drive Safely and Enjoy - The nice thing is that highway exits are clearly marked with green arrows, as are restaurants and various entries from Mobil Travelguide. With the fully-charged T200 battery, I get about 2 hours run time. I've ordered the car DC adapter from Medina Tech for self-contained car-only use.

Guru: I was thinking it would be useful to include my hometown city streets. Is the map data organized on the CD in a way that you could subset a city or state and use a program such as Virtual CD to put those files or directories on the HD?

New MessageRE:T-200 (modified 0 times) Linuxguru

At first glance, I found no menu selection in Tripmaker 1999 to import state-wise street data. I'll look into the possibility of simply copying over selected files from the CD to the flash disk, if that's possible.

In Streetfinder 2000, the street data is organized state-wise, so its possible to import data for a single state. However, Streetfinder 2000 is a 124 MB install for the software alone, with map data over and above that. Moreover, it barfed up some error when I tried to run it (probably ran out of RAM, but I'm not sure - there's a big AVI file that it installs, along with all the associated DLLs and assorted eye-candy). So I went with Tripmaker 1999 which is a smaller install, even with highway data.

Any clues, folks? I'm not very familiar with the features of all the Windows map programs. Somebody recommended SA4, but I don't have that with me, only SA3.

I got a few of these myself and wanted to share some tidbits I've found:

- to get into the bios, hold the stylus in the lower-right-hand corner while powering up

- Speaking of the BIOS, I found an update to the version that came on all mine (1.30) to the last (I think) released version, 1.50. I don't know what the difference is, but 1.50 seems to run fine. See my web site below to get it (b200cs.exe)

- I found a nice deal on PCMCIA type III hard drives that work fine so far in the T-200. Check out http://www.softwareandstuff.com/h.comp.viper170.html for 170 Meg drives for $24.95

- I got win95 runing on one basically putting the install files on a 128meg CF card in a PCMCIA adapter. It was a bit of a mess to get everything to boot correctly, but it works now.

- compgeeks.com sells adapters for 2.5" hard drives that work fine on the 1.8" drives in the T-200. I had some adapters that had the pins coming out perpendicular to the PCB that wouldn't fit right -- but the compgeeks adapters have the pins extending straight out the edges of the PCB. I think they were about $3.95 a piece.

-I've put some of the support files I've found and used at http://www.gwr.com/~greg/t200

- The "maxtime" and "hwsetup" programs that come with win31 on the machines basically work under win95

Enjoy,

Greg

Good work so far!! I think you need to use just the SVGA driver for XFree. The chipset looks like a
WD90C24A. But you might try the WD90C30 or WD90C31 instead. That should get you at least 8-bit color.
As far the Xinput stuff, just go to this site:

I was able to make a dd copy of the drive (of course, before Tom posted the image :P ) using a 2.5 to 3.5 adapter.

Hey Guys,
Here are some pretty cool board type games I put together to run directly on the T200 using the Pen functions in either windows 3.1 or windows 95.
About 8 total games, and all 8 together total of about 500K bytes. They work fantastic on old Dynapad, and you will love the nice graphics and the way the Pen works with them.
I will have them up for a couple of weeks so get them while you can.
http://mywebpages.comcast.net/musicman50/T200GAMES/

Just copy them all to a single directory, and set up the Icons manually.
Again these all work directly with the Pen, no keyboard needed..
Enjoy...

Hello all,

Been lurking...seems we're having a great "bang for the buck" with these Dynapads. I plan to use it as a kitchen appliance. Scan grocery packages with a cuecat into MS Access 2.0, then print the shopping list on a POS serial printer. I have some questions, though. Does anyone know if a decode driver for cuecat exists for win 3.1? And, Access isn't running as fast as the other apps, do you think that 8MB card will make the difference?

Thanks

Monkeypurple:
How do you intend to use the CueCat and serial printer with only one serial port? Wouldn't a parallel printer be easier (wouldn't have to keep switching cables). The easiest way to make the cueCat work in win 3.1 is to hack the scanner to make it output unencrypted ASCII data. See http://air-soldier.com/~cuecat/hardware-decrypt/cuecat_mods.html for more info.

I jumped straight from DOS to Win95 back in the day, so never learned much about 3.x.

Here's my issue: On both my T200s, windows have an incredibly fat (1/2-inch?) border around them. I notice this specifically when I open up a category window inside the larger ProgramManager window, won't swear that it's not a more general issue. The color of this huge frame can be modified from Control Panel/Colors, but where is the thickness?

Can anyone tell me where to look for a window border width global parameter?

Also: Is there ANY pdf viewer I can install that would work with the dynapad's anemic screen?

since i know it didnt see com3 on linux loading(you should see serial driver loaded with ttyS0,etc but mine got only one serial port active
hmm.....
ill dump the peeweelinux 's xwindow program twm and replace it with better twm filei suspect that it may be screwed file

If you have the floppy drive adapter cable and a floppy drive, you can boot with a bootable floppy drive, fdisk /mbr and sys c:.

Otherwise, put it in a desktop with the right adapter cables and do the same thing.

The easiest way to get rid of drvspace is to create space on the drive by deleting \rykoff, \games, and \ll5. Then run \dos\drvspace /uncompress from the DOS prompt.

Tom,
If you want to play MP3 on T200, I don't think the CPU is powerful enough to decode MP3. I have CF-01(AMD 586-133) which can't play MP3 at all and F1200(P-120) which barely makes it.
Anyway I found one old sound/speaker via parallel for $1.99, if anyone is interested to try it out on T200 with printer adapter.
http://www.pcsurplusonline.com/viewprod.cfm?ID=45

piperpacer,
Without Bios support, it is impossible to boot from PCMCIA device. Some old tablets like Ricoh-1200 can boot from PCMCIA Harddrive(maybe Flash cards if format it correctly?). As far as I know, for most of tablets with build-in HD, you can't boot it from PC card.

BTW I got the 2GB PC card from gateway yesterday, I just plugged it in and it works. I exited to dos, run ghost to create HD image. For 80 MB, it was very slow and took more than 10 miniutes but it did finish the job.

Piperpacer: Almost any Thinkpad will boot from a PCMCIA ATA flash card - it's a capability of the BIOS. However, the T200 will not boot from PCMCIA.

What we need for the T200 is a daughtercard that plugs into the 44-pin mini-IDE female connector and has a CF socket on it, into which any generic CF card can be plugged in. In conjunction with a PCMCIA->CF adapter, it would greatly simplify the task of formatting, experimenting and recovering the contents of a T200 HD image. Of course, there's still the issue of whether the BIOS will boot from a drive with different geometry than the Integral 1885 - with some luck, Toshiba would have used a generic BIOS from other Toshiba notebooks of the same vintage, which would not have had the geometry hard-coded into the BIOS. This can be verified by trying to boot the T200 with a generic 2.5" HD connected to a flex-cable adapter - I'll try it later today.

I have a 3.5" IDE->PCMCIA ATA Flash adapter from which I can extract a schematic, but I'm not familiar with the pinout/functionality of CF and how to map ATA flash pinouts to CF. Any interest from BadFlash/Codeman/anybody to develop this product? I'm willing to pay about $15 each for this kind of daughtercard.

I have used PowerBoot on various computers without BIOS support to boot from other hard drives, including PCMCIA, Click and EZ-Drive. It can most probably be adapted to boot the T200 from PCMCIA so long as you leave the internal hard drive in place. Essentially, PowerBoot installs a boot loader and various drivers in the boot sector of the primary boot device (e.g. Drive C:) which bootstaps to the desired boot device (e.g PCMCIA hard drive). You can find it at: http://www.blueskyinnovations.com/products.html#powerboot for about $25.00.

The IBM Home & Away Combo PCMCIA Modem/Ethernet fits superbly in PCMCIA slot 2! This is pretty well supported in both Windows 95 and Linux, so it's good for dual-boot configurations.

The unit consists of a PCMCIA card, and a removable cable-less dongle. Insert the card in slot 2, close the main door and open the small door that reveals slot 2. Now fit the dongle through the opening - it fits so flush that it looks like it was made for the T200.

It's circa 1995, so it's only 14.4k/10BaseT, but it's still a useful card.

I came up with an idea of loading windows 95 on my T200 by using both the internal 80 MB hard drive and a 128MB CF card.
Since the Swapfile will quickly ruin a CF, my thoughts would be to locate the nessary boot files on the Hard drive and including the Swapfile, and then have all the other more stationary executable files on the CF card.
I do know you can relocate the Swapfile to another drive.
If this is possible it would be very easy run windows on the small hard drive..
Does anyone know of this is possible ?
Any comments apperciated...

i tried that setserial before with no success , remember that kernel loads serials ports at boot time i should be able to see more than one serial port but all i got was serial port ttyS0 that kernel detects but not the other port used by wacom should be ttyS2(com3) as it is seen fine under win for workgroup
hmm... and oh one additional note from xfree86.org is that wacom xinput driver for 3.x.x doesnt support older wacom sd and hd so ill have to take one from wacext.tgz and compile it into 3.3.6 as a module and ill try loading the new modules
there is no point of using xfree86 4.x.x on t200 as it is useless feature support so it's best to stick to 3.2.1 to 3.3.6 versions and the 3.3.9 is techinically a pre 4.x.x release

Getting extremely frustrated. can someone advise on exact procedure or post a working 95 image?

did you check to see if it's using com3 port setting with 9600baud and the io range should be 220 to 227 and irq is usually 5
check the serial port setting under controlpanel/system

you should have read the long posting of orginal t200 specs that i posted in this group it shows com3(pen)

What version of W95 are you using? It worked fine on OSR2, BigDave had problems with it on Win95A (original version or Win95). Perhaps that's the problem.

I've got an 8.1gb external drive on my Win95 dynapad, but no copy of ghost. If I could, ahem, find a copy of Ghost, then I could make an image for you to replace your legal copy of win95. cough cough

i'm using 95b (OSR2)

when i set the config to use com3 (wacom 510) and reboot, the config window keeps popping up as if it can't find com3 so it's asking fro something else. I find no place to configure a com3. if i try to create it manually there is no option to select irq 5 only 3 or 4 let alone i/o 220.

mikehell, i can send you a copy of powerquest disk image for to make an image. will your image fit on an uncompressed 80mg drive?

Here's a shot-in-the-dark to try...

delete (rename) your config.sys and autoexec.bat files. Perhaps all the crap that gets loaded at boot (which isn't needed with Win95) is jacking up com port 3.

and there is no reference to anything relating to irq 5 in the bios. can someone who is running 95 with pen working relay their bios settings and device manager setting to me?

I know.. this is probably a silly question... but.. Did the pen work ok in 3.1 before you upgraded it to 95?? I upgraded mine to Win95a and had no problem making the pen work on it.... I then upped it to 95b and again had no problem with the pen.... I decided to go back to 95a as there is more hard drive space and it's a little zippier on the poor little CPU.

Unfortunately I took my hard drive out to restore it to the original image on my main computer and, sadly, my hard drive is now dead due to an unfortunate accident while I had involving my 4 year old son and chocolate milk. Thank God MedinaTech had more hard drives, got two on order (one extra... Just in case my son comes around with chocolate milk again)

Anybody else think we really need a new forum for the T-200????

yes, works fine on the win 3.1 image.

I had a breakthrough today. i was able to manually create com port. since win 95 does not recognize irq5 at all, i reserved 5 which made it availabe then added the com port. it installed with a confilcit so i removed it from the reservation list. then i had to hack the registry to make it com3 because it defaulted to com5. with com3 now installed and reported working with no conflicts, i installed the pen services but to avail. it still isn't working. should i be selecting the pressure option?

My next attempt is to do like mick73 and upgrade from win 3.1 instead of a fresh install

I have Pen Services working under Windows 95a. The problem is, it doesn't show up under System->Device Manager after installation, so there's no way to figure out what its settings are from Control Panel. In BIOS, the only setting shown is COM1, which should be IRQ4/3F8 so that it does not interfere with the pen at COM3.

Also, verify that there are no crosses or exclamations in Device Manager before installation of pen services. Did you you follow the instructions exactly, including removal and addition of registry entries?

BTW, COM3: will not show up under Device Manager even when the pen is working. Pen Services seems to completely take it over, removing its entry from the Registry.

You need to import barrelev.reg in addition to toshiba.reg. Also, copy the vpendc.vxd to the windows\system\vmm32 directory. I've noticed that there's sometimes another version of vpendc.vxd already sitting there that needs to be replaced.

The Windows 95a Image is uploaded!! Thanks to petejengkol for the space!!!!

-------------------------------------------------

Information about the Image:

Windows 95a installation
Deleted all the stuff that wasn't needed (Windows, Games, Rykoff etc.)
Installed Windows 95a from DOS
Configured Pen Services and the Pen Drivers
Configured 32bit support for PCMCIA Cards (All references to PCMPlus drivers were REM'ed out so it's safe to remove that directory.......... I think)
Installed Tweak UI
And.......
That's IT!!!!
C: 54.1 Used 25.7 Free Uncompressed FAT16

I left the DOS and PCMPlus directories and files there in case anybody needs them although they were promptly removed from my system after I made the image for you all; Removing these only gives about 7mb more space.

Enjoy!

Pete will post the link to the file as it's going to be on his server and I couldn't quite figure it out myself

If you don't use compression it would be 80mb... but since there is a fair amount of free space it compresses pretty well, down to 21mb....

Anyone want me to post pictures of the guts of this thing?

Perhaps the pics will help determine if the LCD screen can be adapted to be used as a normal VGA screen for something else. I see a PC board on the bottom (under the main board) that apears to be the video controller, but I'm not sure (has 2 WACOM chips on it, so we know that this board at least does the touchpad stuff). I'd love to be able to use the LCD on this as a normal small LCD monitor (to build into the server cabinet I'm building).

Perhaps someone can point out what obvious step I'm missing here when trying to transfer files using a CF card with PCMCIA adapter in the T200. If the CF card/adapter is not in the T200, the unit will show drives e: and f: or h: and i:, but if you click on them in file manager it says "There is no disk in drive__:". If I insert the CF card/adapter, when I click on the drive letter that corresponds to the slot I inserted it into, the message says, "Drive ___: does not exist." So, it is reacting to the CF card. Unfortunately, I can't access the card or its contents. It doesn't matter if I try from DOS or Win 3.1, or whether I insert the card while the computer is running or put it in before booting up. I've tried reformatting the card on my Win 98 machine both from Windows and DOS, but to no avail.

Hello,

I recently purchase one of these units and it is working wonderfully. My son loves using the Paint Program. My question is the following.
When I first received the unit the battery was dead. I was able to recharge the battery and the first time it ran roughly 3hrs on a full charge. Now when I recharge the battery nothing happens I have left the unit recharging for 24 hrs and when I look at the battery meter it reads 2%. I noticed that the light that the battery is charging is lit but also the light for the power blinks (as if it is in a suspend mode) does anyone know how to turn this feature off? I'm using Windows 3.1, I've looked in the BIOS for a setting and there is no such setting. Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Hello everyone,

I recently bought a new battery for my T200cs and I'm having a little bit of trouble.
So I was wondering if anyone was able to get a hold of a manual, if not here is my problem.

When I charge the battery, the charging LED comes on but also the power LED comes on and starts blinking.
Once the battery is fully charged the power LED keeps on blinking and eventually runs down my battery. I think somehow it is in some kind of hibernation mode.
Does anyone know how to disable this feature? I've looked in the BIOS but to no avail, I'm wondering if there is a function key combination that I need to press to turn this feature off.

My setup is the stock T200cs with 20 megs of RAM, 80 MB HD, Windows 3.1

thanks,
Chillywilly
