I was just looking at the fry's ad and they have this thing called a Vialta Beamer. Its a video phone. You get 2 for $499. Anybody think its hackable? They are also available on the manufacturer's website, http://vialta.com

Well unless they have developed a breakthrough video compression codec, I dont really see a future for this on analog phone lines. This thing supposedly sends data through 33.6k modem. Real world that means 3-5 kbs transmission at best. I dont see much possibility in hacking, except maybe in making some sort of security cam/monotoring system... but for $499? A bit pricey for 15 frames per/sec video. I think maybe I'll wait till this thing hits the discount bin.

I guess its more of a "picture phone" than a video phone as is. Maybe a faster modem could be put in or somehow connect to a broadband connection?

I disagree. This thing _might_ be really cool. I've seen video phones that work on standard POTs lines that are pretty damn good.

One thing to realize, it that it's making a direct connection to the modem on the other side. It's not going over the internet, so your latency will be less, and you should have suitible bandwidth to fill a 3" screen. The video phones I worked with had a DSP chip in them that helped alot with getting decent framerates on a normal phone line.

I own one a beamer videophone I bought it from Best Buy for $499. The less motion the better the video transmission, this is because the videophone only transfers the differences, like a security video cam. I am happy with it - works well.

Vialta has a videophone that connects into your television, it is $149 !

Man I should have waited and bought that one instead!
