For folks who have an old notebook collecting dust...(Or lots of trash can specials like me)

This Sundays Compusa flyer <Not out yet> (Halloween) states they will give $300 "trade-in" credit towards purchase of a new notebook . Limited to one trade in per purchase...Must be a working P-166 or higher, must have battery and charger.

Sounds good. Now if I could just get them to consider my compaq ipaq ia-1 with a microdrive in it to be a notebook, then I would be set!

Wow.. They dont have a notebook on compusa online that is cheaper than $1000. What ever happened to those sub notebooks that use to be like $600-800 or so. That would make it worth it. I paid $250 on my 560X thinkpad about a year ago on Ebay, and trading in for $300 wouldnt be all that exciting of a discount.

Although I have tons of boat anchor Pentium 100's and stuff.. Too bad its only 166 and up.

VivianC,

With an old HP Omnibook p-166 for the $300 trade in credit....
I hope to get the price down on the Toshiba even a little more after a little "legal urban survival" tactics.

Compaq 905US Athlon 1400XP Notebook on page 6 for $799.97 after "the $300 trade-in" savings. (SKU 296996)
14"TFT,DVD and 30GB HDD...

40GB 7200 rpm Western digital harddrive for $59.99 AMIR & Savings

10/100 USB adapter on page 2 for $24.95

L50X ? 15" TFT monitor on the bottom of page 4 (Left corner)for $249.99 After $20 instant and $60 MIR

Spiderman comes out NOV 1 on DVD (on back page)

Except for the $300 Notebook "Trade in credit" nothing else in the flyer catches my interest...

WHATEVER YOU DO, DO NOT GET THAT LAPTOP! I got that exact one a little while ago. I had to take back 4 of them! The last time I just got my money back. Each time it was a different problem, and their support people are asses! With that out of the way...what's this about $100 off a multi function printer? Do you have to give them a working old printer? What is the minimum? I have a perfect old printer for that....

OK I'm confused, which laptop did you have the problems with? The Toshiba or Compaq?
What were the nature of the problems?

So any old printer works? GREAT! I had problems with the toshiba laptop. First, it had a dead pixel right in the middle of the screen. The next one made a weird whining sound when it was in suspend. The next one's hard drive was making all kinds of clicking sounds. The next one didn't come with a power adapter. I was soooo pissed by that last one. I kept the 256 sodimm in the last one though, so we're even. . Then gateway screwed me, twice. Finally I got an HP. I love it! I wasn't very excited about HP, but even their cheapest models come with a DVD/CD-RW combo. Now that I got it I don't think I would get anything else. I'm on it now...

Well Zmoz,

I considered your opinion and experiences with the Satellite 1115-S103.
So I opted for this one,
http://www.compusa.com/products/product_info.asp?product%5Fcode=296279&csearch=1

I got $300 store credit on an old HP P-166 Omnibook 800CT. The service tech checked it out and issued a pink store credit voucher. I truly expected a real hassle and some haggling but everything went real smooth!

The manager also granted a hassle free NO RECEIPT return on 2 512 MB sticks of PNY PC133 SDRAM still in original unopened retail packaging.

They issued $261.10 store credit on the memory. (I may have got them both for 10% less than a "C" note a week ago from another retailer )

I walked out of C-USA with the Toshiba Satellite 1415-S173 Notebook for $935.67 Cash. (There is also a $50 MIR)

I'm really impressed with this notebook! It has a 15" VERY BRIGHT display with NO defective pixels! I checked for defective pixels the very first thing!

I remember Starfish linked a post to a LCD pixel utility many moons ago...I'm still looking for it.

After checking out the link above,
Great Monitor Test Patterns & Instrutions. (Yet Simple)
The only reason to still include this Link below is,
this fits on a Floppy & can be used anywhere,
But is only for Dead Pixels.

I'm going to get the Toshiba provided "No fault" extended warranty 3 yr for $229. I have 30 days to purchase it.
Includes accidental damage including screen.

The Compusa sales guy really tried to get me to buy thier TAP warranty. He got kinda jacky when I repeatedly declined.
They wanted $399 for 3 years.
I really don't trust the tech's at Compusa. Most are underpaid and bad attitudes. Even employ a few moron's.
