Cheap, Oddball, 10" LCD monitor for $120

Ran across this cheap 10" monitor. It uses a proprietary video card in which power for the LCD is drawn directly from the video card. Could be an interesting addition to a mini-itx project.

The vendor doesn't have a steller resellerrating rating.

However, when my daughter needed a cheap monitor I sent her directly to their store. They treated her well and she got a real bargain on a used/refurb monitor. This might be a deal for those in the San Jose area. Too bad I live in Philly. Not! The Eagles beat the crap out of the 49ers.

I checked these out when they first hit eBay. They're junk and I wouldn't pay more than $20.00 for one.

- VGA only (640 x 480)
- Latest drivers available seem to be Win95

Unless you actually _enjoy_ writing video drivers for undocumented hardware, give them a wide berth.

Actually, card is plug n' play on win98se and above...

Still, $120 is a bit too rich for my tastes

I took a chance on one of these. Just got it in today and so far I'm impressed. Windows 2000 recognized the vid card and installed the driver without a hitch. My monitor was in generally good condition with only a bit tape adhesive on the base that was easily cleaned off. At first inspection it appears to have three dead pixels. Unfortunately two of them are side-by-side. It is a TFT active matrix LCD with a standard mode of 800x600. Haven't tried any game serious games or movies on it yet, but Microsoft 3D pinball played fine with no ghosting. Viewing angle is a bit restrictive...like LCDs from several years ago. I'll post some pics and specs on my website in a day or two.

Have you given the LCD anymore of a workout ? How is the ghosting? have you tried any video on it to see how it handles that?

Thanks,
Reldridg

Some pics and the start of a write-up are here:

The Chips and Technologies video card has a nice crisp output on the 10.4 inch display. It also supports twin head mode with a second VGA monitor attached to the standard VGA port. It only has 2 megs on board though, so DVD playback is not practical/possible. It does fine with all VCDs and most DIVX videos. Ghosting is typical for a 4+ year old TFT display (moderate, but watchable). I did manage to locate a PDF file of the users guide on this thing if anyone is interested I'll host it on my website.

By request, I've posted the users manual to the little Unisys / Keycorp 10.4-inch LCD monitor and video card on my website. You can find it here:

Hey, they're down to $99.95 as of today (12 April).

Rockhammer, thanks for posting the manual. The TAS episode is a nice touch.

Anyone try getting this display to work with a standard VGA card instead of the 4mb card that it comes with? Wouldn't the signels on the line be the same as standard VGA

BigDog The card has to supply 5 volts and HV backlight to the display as the ad says
you DONT need a power supply.

Yeah, it's non-standard all-the-way. On the plus side, they've recently dropped the price to $79. BTW, if anyone has been trying to access my website to get the manual, just keep trying. The host has been down but should be back up in a couple of hours.
