TigerDirect has them here: http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?sku=N52-1072%20P 300mhz celery, built-in telephone(WTF?,) built-in 14" display, the only thing missing is a clock radio. Kind of neat despite the misinfo: "The new Intel dot.station features a familiar window-based interface" Uh... no, it runs Linux. "13" TFT" Nope, 14" CRT, why else would it be so bulky? Sadly, TigerDirect claims the shipping weight is 70lbs, so you'll get hosed on the shipping unless you can somehow get them to waive it. Found a better pic also: ftp://download.intel.com/pressroom/images/internet/dot_station.tif Did I mention that it comes with Linux?

For anyone interested there is someone selling a "spanish" version of this product on eBay right now.

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&category=3744&item=3409125505

I'm not the seller, but I'm trying to barter down the price to $50-$75 since he said:"THIS ITEM IS NEW FACTORY SEALED COMES IN SPANISH MANY IN STOCK COMES WITH 15 DAY WARRANTY."

I assume you could remove the "spanish" OS, just hope the keyboard isn't.

sorry, my last msg. was a little vague.

"I've" talked the eBay seller down to $75 shipped. I making the "assumption" that if they'll let it go to me for $75 total, they'll do the same for others. According to the seller the keyboard is a standard usb keyboard, and is not spanish, but english. it would seem that the os is just spanish.

Please let me know over the next few days if anyone else is intersted. I'll approach the seller since I have a dialogue going. I'll see if a "group buy" changes the price anymore, but I would be shocked if it did. That's dirt cheap for what you're getting.

i've got an email into the seller to make sure my price will be ok for others. i haggled a bit and got it from the eBay price of 100, to 75 + 10/shipping, to 75 total.

there's a POSSIBILITY that the seller won't want to seller multiple units this cheap.

just making it known. i'll let you know what they say.

ps -

no problem about arranging it, my pleaseure. :)

i haven't heard of anyone having one of these units...

Is it easy to remove the HD?
How can you do a group buy? How can we all be safe buying this? I wouldn't mind having a few of these, how many does he have?

I'm thinking the best way is for me to continue to talk to the seller. I have an email out, stating that I have a few other takers, and I just want to make sure that the seller is ok with that price, for all others (see my prior post if you are confused).

If they are ok with that. Then I will merely give the ok, and each person will contact the seller.

I hope this sounds fair. I'm not in a position to have units shipped to my home, then ship them out to. Plus, that would most likely be extra shipping for all.

It's a free country, so can't stop you, but I'd prefer that no-one from this forum initiate any communication with the seller at this point, for fear this could sour the deal.

Fair?

It has usb, the hd should be easy for a non-beginner to pull. Safe, use a credit card. I'm leary of everyone, but that's just me. :) exact quantity unknown. i'll try to ask without raising any eyebrows.

I want to keep this on the D/L with the seller before the flood gates open. :) Or the demand will jack the price up more. This would be less then ideal for us.

The Ebay unit seems to have a smaller HD, the TigerDirect one says 10GB, the ebay one says 4.5GB...are these different units? Why the different HDs?

New MessageRE:Intel dot station - $199 (modified 0 times) jsmmd

quick answer: same units, different specs. keep in mind the Tiger Direct are US, these are Spanish. Based on all my research the only differences are the OS, and the HD size.

if people would like to wait a few days for me to get one, and then i can report the situation, it might be best. i don't want anyone to waste the money on something that might be foo-bar.

i'm sure, that most will throw caution to the wind.

---
i've got a few msgs. into codeman to make an area for this unit. if not i'm going to start a thread about the unit outside of this area, in the emachines area since i'm a moderator for that area.

Hey PeteC - good to hear from you again. Let me know if you end up getting an order in (sending you the cash via paypal would probably be easiest for both of us). I wonder if that new TigerDirect outlet store in Naperville carries these (I just read about that opening this weekend on www.techbargains.com). Did you ever get any of those maroon INETs from MicroCenter? Mine is working great, but I'm still havnig problems with the right set of video driver for simultaneous TV and Monitor. I tried both sets that are on Intel's site and the ones that come with the iNET (those 'seem' to work - stuff on the tv screen flashes, but even changing the refresh rate doesn't seem to work - the REAL frustraing part is that I USED TO HAVE T WORKING PERFECTLY!). I did a little checking around while I'm waiting for Bob's Paypal information.

The datasheet at Tigerdirect says "Powers on and off at the touch of a button — no ‘booting’ required" and "Zero maintenance software for the consumer — entire software configuration remotely managed
using Intel SMS" and "Hard disk drive for saving downloaded material for offline use" so I imagine that the OS is in flash like the iopener. I wonder what keycombo to get into BIOS?

The picture at http://www.moto.com/portfolio/projects/ (mentioned in the first post) shows what looks like some kind of smartcard reader near the front corner of the unit, but http://www.tigerdirect.com/images/SkuImages/gallery/large/N52-1072P-q.jpg looks like the slot is molded over, so that is something that maybe didn't make it into production.

But others will have their units before I do, so my idle rambling is probably a waste of time.

the reason for diffrent hd size has something to do with cost in contries a 10 gb hd may be more expensive in spaish contries than in usa hence the currenies rates in pesos, pesetas, etc
and workers makes less wages than in germany where wages are highest
so a smaller hd is cheaper

This toy should be able to be upgraded to 256megs of ram, and a 800mhz CPU. I don't think anyone NEEDS this toy, it's just a fun looking toy.

VegasZone Disassembling Directions (Translated from Spanish thanks to Google)

It looks like a bear to get into though. Note: The above site says you need a "Torx type of 3mm." So might want to make sure you have one before it arrived if you're buying the unit. :)

------

begrantii,

If you haven't, check out the link above. The 15th and 16th pages show the inside. It looks like you might be able to cut away the site, and install a slimline CD drive. Only time will tell. Once we start to get them, by the end of the week I hope, someone should be able to let you know.

You are probally better off going with an external USB drive if that's an option for you.

----

Per bOB he said he had 200 units. Unless someone here buys bOB out, you shouldn't have any problems getting one... (This is an ASSumption.

Mad props, jsmmd! Your research and website information are great! I got my tracking number from Bob (I think we should cut him some slack for leaving his capslock key on... ) and my unit should arrive here in California next Monday.

The front part of the sheet metal chassis sure looks about the right size for a CD-RW bay. I'm anxious to take the unit apart and see if the bezel molds had a provision for an opening there.

Thanks for the praise. Just trying to contribute back.

Something else I found, that I'm going to add to my site. I've managed to stay up too much looking and sleuthing and have got myself sick. I should have thought of this one in the beginning:Wayback Machine of Intel's dot.station pages. (Staring Apr 13, 2001 there are references to the Spanish model, too sick/tired to try to make sense out of it. If someone could let us know if there's anything good there, that's be nice.)

I'll cut bOB some slack. :) I'm not perfect either. FYI, I'm east coast my UPS delivery date says Wednesday.

Having seen some of the disassembly pics that jsmmd linked, I thought a good old fashioned safety rant would be appropriate for those about to rock. Just rember that when you've got the cover off, be mindful that the monitor can store voltage for some time. Enough voltage to make you rather dead- way more dangerous than putting a plexi window in your DSL router, so be careful. </rant> I might have to sell my Zaurus to get one of these!

hi,I am a spanish guy writing this #### with a dot station running win98SE.
Spanish people are buying "modified" Dot Stations the bios have been modified to load another OS if you buy original stations you´ll have lot of problems to change the OS.we buy it aproxx. for 100€ and it comes with a preinstalation of win xp but mos of us have installed anotner os like Me 98 or 2000 cos it fits better to the machine.
to change the OS most of us have deassembled the dot and put the hard disk into another computer, but some people has done it with a external usb cd rom drive.
have a look at he splash screen,if it´s a modified dot station it should look in blue and say something like intel desktop board.
Any questions write to: blackstreet@lycos.es and i´ll try to answer. Use plain language please.as you see my english is not very good.
