redwood,

I've seen them on eBay a bit cheaper, but most people who have a reserve price are looking for the same range, $200-$250. I've asked.

eBay Link to Search Results for IceBox 9 TV/DVD/Internet/etc...

If anyone has one, let us know. I've been wondering how "fun" they are.

Picked up a couple of these ($150) and should be arriving soon. Anyone know if these things support ethernet with the stock WinCE? (wap11?)

First toy that my wife is anxiously awaiting for (one goes in the kitchen).

zonyl,

Keep us updated on the ethernet status of these! I could definitely find a use for two or three of these if I could make them ethernet capable.

Just got them today. No PCMCIA slot.. :( Just the modem. HOWEVER, there is a parallel port, and depending if I can get linux on it (x86 geode CPU), I can run a parallel ethernet adapter. Anyone know if WinCE has a Xircom driver?

It works really well as a DVD / TV though! I got into the setting screen for the Internet connection and it looks very flexible to dial any PAP/CHAP ISP. I will probably be putting a 56K modem in leased line mode on my Gentoo machine and see how well PPP goes over the internal modem on the device. What is the phone voltage needed? 12V?

Ill crack it open tonight, see how the system is layed out and how feasible it is to replace the boot image. I am really having a hard time googling for any "technical" information on this machine..

One more thing to point out -> It has a DIN connection on the back (it claims it is for controlling Door Locks, intercom systems, etc.) Maybe it is a serial port? Really wish Salton would kick out some developer information on this!

Here is the scope. I tore it all apart and what I found:

- SH3 CPU
- CyberPro 2010
- Zoran NTSC
- Modem is on a daughter board (similar to IO)
- All chips surface mount (including flash memory (intel))
- One odd looking connector (about 40 pins, high density)

Adam714 - Thanks for the picture of the internals.

Zonyl / Adam714, that appears to be a standard IDE connector in the upper right. Any chance of plugging in a drive and seeing if you can get it to boot? It appears as though there are also some other interesting pads / headers elsewhere on that board. Any chance of a USB header?

Sorry for all of the questions and speculation, I'd really like to be able to get an ethernet connection on one of those. Thanks for all of the info so far, keep it coming!

It is an IDE, and it hooks up to the DVD drive. Anyone have any idea on the boatloader on this thing? I am installing a cross compiler for SH3 now, but I will need to get it to look at a kernel first. I was thinking the connector on the bottom right side of the picture might be some sort of card bus (PCMCIA maybe?) I have never seen this type of connector before though.

Could do the IO approach and punch keys on the keyboard during load and see if something magical comes up. We need someone on the inside to get us some info ;)

BTW: There is a little tiny hidden reset button on the left side in one of the vent holes (colored blue).

After looking closer at Adam's picture, I find that my board is apparently a different Rev. My "mystery" connector is different. Looks like the same pin count, different connector.

Yep.. No spinning 'E' on the browser here. A lot of the preliminary information I had was being confused with the newer IceBox model. That apparently has a x86, WinCE, PCMCIA, etc (and a $2000 pricetag).

I am looking at a more low-tech hack now, seeing as I cannot find a single thing on the net about the boatloader or really any lowlevel info on this machine. I would like to find out if the IR receiver can be used as a PS/2 interface to another computer (ala websurfer). I have a complete video / IR distribution system going to the device slready, and would like to use its keyboard to control my NTSC enabled gentoo machine in the basement. ( I am already using it with a websurfer ir keyboard, just would like to use the waterproof one that came with it )

Maybe Ill just write some sort of xkeys app that uses my USB-UIRT interface.

It is an SH3 computer with a totally unknown bootloader. (if it even has one) The odds of an x86 MBR program running from a HDD on this thing out of the box is very unlikely, enough such that I am not going to bother trying.

It doesnt appear to have any other device hooked up to the IDE (DOC or otherwise) and would indicate it boots from a simple flash device like most embedded systems do. Nothing is in a socket and I dont have in-place plugs to examine the contents of the flash chips on it.

Is this project dead? has anyone figured out a way to replace OS or at least get a NIC working?

This device would be absolutely perfect if we could get a NIC working. A few of these would definitely be useful around the house with a wired or wireless NIC of some sort. I'm not so concerned about changing out the OS, the NIC is the most important thing.

Any insight from Icebox owners? What's the feasibility of getting a NIC working?

There is no obvious connection for a NIC to be added, so I would believe that the shipped OS does not have support for any such device, especially through a non-traditional port. I have a linux kernel built for SH3, Cyberpro, and Xircomm parallel nic support (assuming those drivers dont have issues in SH3 build :) ), but have no info on the bootstrap.

I would guess there is a way to flash the system from CD (for future updates), but without any insider information, this is too daunting of a task to figure out.

Zonyl, thanks for all of your effort and insight in trying to figure this device out. I really had my hopes up for connecting a NIC to this thing, but unfortunately it doesn't look like that's going to happen. Please keep us updated to any further progress you make! Good luck, and thanks again.

Does anyone have an IceBox and a storescope? (My HP broke this summer and I dont have $$$ for a new storage scope). I would be curious to know if the DIN port on the back is kicking out rs232. (maybe a back door into the machine)
