LiveWarehouse has the HP 4000 Print Appliance for $25. It's a rack-mountable box with front panel LCD and appears to contain a National Semiconductor Geode processor, hard drive, and runs on the Linux kernel. It might make a good server appliance if it's hackable enough... Oh yeah, shipping is around $20 :(

Thanks zonyl, where did you find that info? My googling turned up similar specs but in Polish, so I wasn't certain if it applied to this unit.

Fortunately, I speak Polish. Found some info on the news groups as well :)

Not sure if this device is worth the money though. No video, no sound, no serial, no ps2. LCD and a HD really.

what about doing a linux install on a similar system, configure vnc, then swap the drive into the hp 4000, could be very useful as a networked storage system ,etc.

Has anyone tried installing something other than linux on one of these? According to the specs the DB9 connector is a serial port which is capable of controlling a UPS. I'm more interested to find out whether the whole unit can run DOS and use the serial port as your standard COM1.

Too bad that company doesn't ship to Canada. Anyone care to send one my way?

I picked up a couple of these devices... I'll try to take some pictures later this week and get them posted.

The device is running a 2.0.36 linux kernel and is basically a modified version of RedHat 5.2 running Samba, I made some quick config changes by pulling the disk and was able to put a couple of files into a samba share on the device and mount it from my laptop.

There are no ISA/PCI slots, nor is there video onboard... catting /dev/pci does show that there is a pci bridge on the board, as well as video, but i'm not a hardware guy, so I have no clue what to solder where to get it to work.
