Is it IDE? (not news, but there's no "General Questions" area)

So, I've been playing around with a thin client, and it APPEARS to have an IDE-like header on the board. There's too many pins (4, I believe... Power maybe?), so I can't just fit a cable on to it.

With a multimeter, or through any other method, how can I be sure it's IDE? This is also assuming I don't know which pin is #1 also, because there are no labels. How does everyone else do it?

sounds like a notebook IDE connector... Do the pins seem closer together than a normal IDE header?

BTW what's the device?

Do a Google search and get a pinout for a laptop HDD. The pins are the same as for a
normal IDE with 4 extra pins for 5 volts, gnd and a control which you don't need.
If it is a laptop conector then a laptop ribbon or adaptor will work.

zerozero: There is a good chance that the connector is for IDE if the connector is a 22x2 2mm pitch (42mm x 2mm) or 20x2 0.1" pitch (1.9" x 0.1"). There are a couple of ways to tell if it is really an IDE connector. The first is to plug in a IDE device and see if it works. The more conservative method is to trace the pins back to the chip that drives them, find the specs for the chips, then verify that the connector is hooked to an IDE output of the chip. HTH.

Electronics run on smoke, if you let the smoke out they won't work

The device is a NeoStation 200... See http://www.neoware.com/manuals/netos31/manuals/htmlsysadmin/sysadmin31.1a.html#pgfId=3425

And it does, in fact, appear to be a Laptop IDE. I'm going to go get a converter tomorrow to test it out.

First I'm going to get it to boot from disk, then I'm going to see if I can get XP Embedded to run.

Thanks for all the help!!!
