DataRover 840 units
Inexpensive vintage PDAs.... but software?

Hi- I recently purchased on of these DataRover 840 PDAs that run Magic Cap OS (see http://www.pencomputing.com/magic_cap/data_rover_840.html). Pretty cool little devices for $40 and well made but... the problem seems to be with loading any additional software. It has two pcmcia slots, but when you insert them, in order for the DataRover to recognize it, you need to format it - which erases anything you put on the card from a PC! Even as a stand-alone speaker phone or handheld e-mail device it is pretty cool still..... I'd love to add some games (there are some freeware ones on the internet) or, better yet, some ebooks... thanks for any ideas about this and or modification thoughts. Thanks!

"The current Magic Cap device, the DataRover 840, runs version 3.1 of the operating system, a dramatic improvement in almost every regard. The DataRover is similar to the PIC-2000 on the outside (two slots, backlight, same beefy battery), but the guts are completely different. It features a much faster MIPS R3000 processor, more RAM, an IrDA port, and a faster modem."

et2002: I just bought 2 units as well.... Very nice. I was able to use my Dialup account and check email. Unfortunatly, no Brower yet. I think I may have found a few links for small apps & Games. I have not tried to get attatchments in email yet, but you may try emailing one of the small apps to yourself, and retrieving it via email attatchment on the Rover. This may or may not work.

Link #1 http://multipart-mixed.com/magiccap/kelp/

Link #2 http://www.spies.com/~josh/magiccap/cujochat/index.html

I also bought the Magic eXchange Cable & Software. It indicates that it is for any MagicCap Communicator. I will post info on it when it arrives.

The link #1 above has links to drivers for several flavors of Enet cards, but just plugging one in does'nt seem to work. Maybe the drivers will help. Again, will post l8r...

Keep on it...

Yes - I found a yahoo group that is semi-active too: http://groups.yahoo.com/group/magiccapdevices/. It has a files section with the games you found and a few other items. I have been able to e-mail the programs as .pkg files and they unpack on the unit. I have 8 or 10 games on there now plus the web-browser (which I have not tried yet). I'll keep you updated if I find more... thanks for your info. I really like the OS!

et2002,

I have sent email attatchments to my Datarover as well. But can you explain what I do with them next..?? I think the attatchment shows as a small puzzle piece at the bottom of the email.. (Right)??

But it asks me to try to redecode it as a test file...?? Then, I am not sure what to do then...

Any luck finding a cable..?? The standard magicLink Cable does not work ($40 Mistake).

I found on ebay, a 448mb pcmcia Flash card, I think it will work for storage, but I have recieved it yet... Hopefully not another $40..well You know...

Thanks,
John

I'm assuming you are using the instructions from the yahoo group.... if so - the .pkg file should automatically end up in the 'storage room' after the e-mail has arrived. After the e-mail is done downloading, go to the 'Storage Room'. Just click the 'package' on the 'shelf' and it should automatically unpack. A couple of the files didn't work but most did. Try e-mailing the solitaire package or the matchit file..... I think the cable is next to impossible to find!

I was wondering..

My mother (a total technophobe, who can't figure out a mouse) wants something just to send and receive Emails, on a limited (extremely) budget. Would this be a good replacement idea for a $300+ laptop, just for that purpose? She could probably use the 10 hours monthly dial-up access I get with my Hi-Speed, for which she'd have to switch between two area phone dial-up numbers.

What do you folks think?

I would get a hackable MailStation.

Use Access-4-Free.net to get a dial-up to check email. You have to pay a one time fee of $5.00 and get to dial up 10 hours per day. To check email, this is more than plenty.

I haven't used my MailStation and the account for over a year now so I am not 100% this advice is still valid.
