Canon Cameras run DOS on 16-bit x86 CPU

Own a Canon camera? Help us hack it! Canon cameras use ROM-DOS from Datalight runing on x86 compatible CPU. So far we've been able to get part of firmware from the camera using s10sh under Linux. Disassembly of that firmware allowed us to break Canon's weak encryption to decrypt and unbundle Canon's firmware updates. More at:

The effort started with goal to enable additional features on Canon Digital Rebel that Canon crippled so that it DR couldn't compete directly with Canon's more expensive 10D. However, it appears that at least parts of the code are common on many Canon's cameras.

Who will be the first to run Linux on their camera?
(Lixus was a hoax)

Progress is being made!!! I wonder if someone will be able to write a mame emulator for it, just like the old Kodak DC cameras. Pac-man on my DR would be pretty cool!
