What do you think of the screen on them? Also have you looked at any of the FC-PGA to FC-PGA2 Adapters that allow you to go to a faster celeron on the 440bx motherboards?

I have had success using the socket adaptors. I have a couple on my workbench / along with a variety of processors from 500-1 Ghz that I will try. Usually have best luck with older style non celeron processors. Shipping is standard UPS rates.

I have ordered one of the Kiosks I have not done a little project for awhile so I thought this might be nice. I might try some different processors in the system also to see if that helps with speed. Not sure what the project will be but this makes a nice little system for it.

Hey there PeteC,

Do you have any of the model numbers off of the motherboard or a brand name from where the pc and motherboard were produced?

Thanks

I just bought one of these, myself. There's a great thread about these units on the mp3car forum, http://www.mp3car.com/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=21424... worthwhile to check out. These guys have pretty well dissected every aspect of these... great information there. I also spoke with the folks who are seling these just this morning and was told that they have several hundred of them in stock... I believe the phone number to the company is posted in the mp3car thread, so one could call direct and place an order. I'd count on them showing up on eBay again. ;)
.....just livin' and dyin' in three-quarter time.

So far what I have done:
- installed XP Pro / Microtouch drivers - no problems seen loaded up all fine - just a bit slow. XP runs fine with 256 Megs just a bit slow with Celeron 466Mhz

What is being looked at:
- clock rate is fixed at 66Mhz - but motherboard is capable of 100Mhz - tested and working
- portrait mode available
- physically enough space for 2 hard drives in the unit.
- Pins for USB exists on the motherboard- USB works fine, just plug a regular internal USB header cable into it and choose your poison for how to mount the port externally.

- LCD specs are:
1. LCD Module: NEC TFT Color LCD Module, NL8060AC31-12G
2. Resolution: 800 x 600 pixels, 24 bit
3. Size: 31 cm
4. Touch screen: Elo TouchSystems (Module 387507-000)
5. Viewing area: 246.0 mm x 187.4 mm
6. Active Touch Area: 248.9 mm x 187.4 mm

- For a power switch (it doesn't come with one) you can hook up a two pole momentary switch to the jumper pins marked PWR next to the riser connector and that will turn the system on and off.

- Volume up/down controlled by pins on the riser card. User connected momentary switches to each, and they do adjust the volume control in windows, but they make like 20 small steps from 0 to about halfway, and then 2 or 3 big jumps to maximum.

- CPU Support -
1 - After running InSpec program from the kiosk PC, Todd, at Powerleap tech support (online chat) said that their PL-370/T w/ 1.4GHz processor should work on it! The Powerleap 1.4GHz upgrade would total around $120.

2 - Also available (ebay) is a ~$15 chinese "socket 370 to Tualatin adaptor". Apparently, this adaptor will not allow the kiosk's PPGA 370 to use the Tualatin FC-PGA2?? However, it will allow a Coppermine FC-PGA CPU (~$45) at max speed of 1.1GHz. So a 1.1GHz upgrade would cost only half as much ($60) using this solution.

But, the 13µm Tualatin run very cool, so only a large heat sync should be required when underclocking them sufficiently. $60 more, but quieter.

The following processors will work on the motherboard with no adaptor:

Intel Celeron (PPGA, Socket 370) Mendocino 25µm 300 / 333 / 366 / 400 / 433 / 466 / 500 / 533 @ 66MHz

The following processors will work on the motherboard with adaptor:

Intel Celeron (FC-PGA, Socket 370) Coppermine 18µm 533 / 566 / 600 / 633 / 667 / 700 / 733 @ 66MHz
Intel Celeron (FC-PGA, Socket 370) Coppermine 18µm 800 / 850 / 900 / 950 / 1000 / 1100 @ 100MHz
Intel Celeron A (FC-PGA2, Socket 370) Tualatin 13µm 1.0 A / 1.1 A / 1.2 / 1.3 / 1.4 GHz @ 100MHz

- Process to up speed to 100Mhz - validated and working - lift pin 25 on the Pericom PI6C100 PLL off the board and jump it to pin 26 which pulls the pin up from a logic 0 to a 1 (3.3v). A Powerleap Adapter with a 1 Ghz Celeron on it posted and ran fine with the chip.

- For Stereo sound - you've got to move the 0 ohm resistor from R21 to R20, which basically means that the leads are shorted. It IS a surface mount resistor however, which means you're gonna have to get the soldering iron out Desolder that resistor and then just create a solder bridge between the leads on R20. R20&21 positions are located on the riser card, PCI slots side, near the audio connector.

OK, I broke down and bought one of these yesterday. Possible use as a permanent wireless 802.11b web surfer in my car. I'm getting tired of lugging the Averatec 3150h notebook back and forth.

I'll probably fab an inclosure for it from plastic/fiberglass.

Interestingly enough I found out how senile I'm really getting these days...at only 49...
I found $300 cash tucked away in one of my shirt pockets in my shop. I have been letting my Cats lay on the shirt for the last few months. They really loved to sleep on that old shirt and I did not have the heart to remove it to wash till earlier this week!

Well the cash paid for this new toy, And the kitty's got a new Cat bed!

The funny thing is I don't even remember why I put the cash in my shirt pocket...Oh well

Anyone seen my car keys...

Not a bad deal. If it had a better graphics chipset I would jump on one. The Intel/CHIPS/Asilient 69000 chipset is the deal killer for me. It will perform fairly well in general desktop applications but gaming is out of the question as is DVD and Divx playback.

Another fun day looking in the trash, These cases should work nicely for my Kiosk projects!

http://f2.pg.photos.yahoo.com/ph/elektronikkrack/album?.dir=/e7fc

The Lcd should fit real nice in this case after some work with a dremel tool,Some aluminum and plastics fab.

BTW The Kodak DC120 camera I took these photos with, Not the best in the world but can't complain for something that was free!
http://www.kodak.com/global/en/service/products/ekn007588.jhtml (They are wrong It works with Win XP)!

The wireless 802.11b pcmcia card I'm using now plus the clear blue illuminated usb mouse were found too, all in near perfect condition!

Edision had it right! Gosh I love this hobby!

I got my kiosk pc friday. NICE UNIT! I'm very impressed!

Thanks for the info PeteC!

Just for general info, The power supply is identical to the one used in the Soyo Li-7000.
http://www.soyotek.com/products/proddesc.php?id=172

The Li-7000 mobo is way to big. Won't fit the kiosk and no lcd support.

I recognized the PS right away due to the fact I have several of these Soyo units. The fan in the PS is a tad bit noisey but I plan on replacing it with a higher quality (Sanyo?) better reliabilty fan later so that's not a problem with me.

I had planned on replacing the original pci riser with a single slot riser but looks like that is out due to the obvious fact the koisk riser is propritory.

The Kiosk LCD and all the components look like they will fit nicely into the Intermec cases I scored on last week after some work with the dremel. Now to set aside some time for this project.

A local business was very generous and "donated" a working WD 120GB 8MBCache HDD with 2 yrs warranty left on it, NLX Mobo with a working 933mhz P-III Cpu, a retail version Win xp pro CD with key, some other related odds and ends.

Very off topic but just an observation,
Where are all the jobs? Seems like businesses are slowly fading away here! Closure here closure there, I use to have about 20+ businesses occasionally supplying used parts but now that is down to about 6 or 7. At this rate all my parts sources will pretty much dry up soon.

But, I still really love this hobby!

02U2 - One of those cases would make a great "Trivia Quiz" type Bar Game, the touchscreen type you see at Bars. There are probably some roms out there. nice find.

Can someone possibly send me the email address and/or phone number to the place that has these 12" Kiosk touchscreen PC's? I am not a fan of ebay and do not use it. Thanks for ANY help.

Oh, yeah, duh: I created a Yahoo Group last night for this unit so folks can share info (mods, uses, etc) and it's a central repository, rather than combing thread after thread on multiple forums:

what do you mean "extending" the LCD?

On a separate note; I was just getting ready to put a call out to buyers of this unit to see if anyone has any of the cases that they would be willing in giving up. I am mostly looking for the plastic shell and the metal base with the piece of metal attached to it that the pc cards stick thru. Hopefully for free if they're just lying around, I pay shipping.

I inadvertantly left out "CABLE".

Extending the LCD cable. Thought about using a scsi cable, about 40 inches. Computer on the floor of the car and lcd panel on the dash.

Whats wrong with keeping the connectors as they are on the back of the LCD for the vga and power and just getting longer cables?
