..so sorry in advance and please move this to a more appropriate area if there is one. I looked myself for a good 2o mts trying to figure out where to put this with no good ideas.

Anyhow. I got a good deal on one of these on eBay and wanted to use this for a variety of home projects. It looks like the perfect solution for me. I got it in the mail, poked around with the pre-installed WindowsCE 4.1 and was pretty happy with my purchase.

Then things went all to ####.

I did a cold boot for some reason or another. I was trying to get the device to recognize the microdrive I inserted into the additional memory slot, and I was checking to see if this would help it. Upon powering back up it states: "boot failure from previous device". I made sure it is looking in the right place in the bios for the flash drive, and everything looks dandy.
The web has some information about pulling the flash card out, slapping it into a reader , and making changes that way if needed. SO, I pulled the entire thing apart, yanked the flash, and popped it into a handy dandy flash reader.

The flash is empty.

SO it looks like somehow I deleted the OS. How I did that I have no idea.

How the heck do I get it back on there? From what I can tell right now I need to compile wince for the machine specifically. That leads me to believe I have to learn WinCE programming now. Not something I'm really in the mood to do. Upon doing a LOT of web research I found most everybody is running Midori on this thing, mostly with only mediocre luck, something I have absolutely no desire to do anyhow. I want plain ole wince, nothing more, nothing less.

I'm kind of at a end-pass now. I'm not really sure what to do now.

I suppose I cold format the microdrive with winXP and run that, but it seems to be wild overkill. I want the speed and easy on easy off features of WinCE.

I'm annoyed and tired. Silly me, up until yesterday, I thought I could just install CE like any other OS.

Its been a while since I played with the Evaluation Version of Ce.net.

To put it on my laptop I had to build an image with ce.net and burn it to disc on my desktop machine.
Then download a program that created a floppy to prepare the HD (format and bootloader).
Then used 98 floppy to copy image from CD to HD, next remove media reboot.

This gave me video, mouse, keyboard and access to application that I chose in the build proccess.

I did not have pcmcia, serial, modem, cdrom, hd, floppy, or Irda because of:
1. lack of drivers for the hardware.
2. lack of skill with ce.net.
3. the Eval Version of Ce.net

Anyway you are probably going to need couple of things.

A properly formatted media to boot from.
A bootloader for Ce and it will be hardware specific(arm,mips,x86,etc).
And a Image for that device(also hardware specific) or the ability to create one(with driver).

Hope this helps

THis machine is identical with the exception of the OS. Note that there is a space on the CF slot that should be able to accomodate....say, a 2.5" HDD. If only an adapter exists...
MidoriLinux should not be too hard to get a hold of. Good luck!

I asked them politely about if I had a warantee and if I had any options, and the rep emailed me back in under 24 hours, told me I was fuly covered, and they already sent a RMA to me as of the writing.

NOiCe!

I'm still going to swap out the old 32 mb HD when I get my new one, but this time I'll be smart and copy that image first!
