32X IDE Internal Laptop CD-ROM $3.99

Find it here:

This this might be useful for some of your projects. Best price I've seen on a slimline drive. Not the lastest and greatest, but looks interesting since it appears to be a slot-load. Wish there were more details in the description. I'm thinking these may have been from the old slimline Compaq Deskpro SFF desktop boxes, not from laptops.

edit: BTW, shipping by priority mail is a reasonable $4.85 to Kentucky.

Cool. $10 shipped for a slimline drive to Missouri. For a 32X slot load this is a great deal! Most slot loads go for more than the regular 'pop-out' style. Should go great with the compact SBC system I'm building.

Got the drive in on Friday, just now got around to really looking at it. I appears to have the same connector as a standard slimline drive, but the faceplate is definently an odd-ball. Don't expect this drive to fit in an opening designed for a standard laptop drive. Still not a bad deal for $4.00.

BTW, the same store has Fellow's gel wrist rests for mouse and keyboard for $0.99 and $1.79 each respectively. That is a great deal.

Nope, it has a connector like the one shown on this page.

http://www.bixnet.com/in24xslimnot.html

AFAIK that is pretty much the standard connector for slimline optical drives. I bought an adaptor to take that to normal desktop IDE on ebay a couple of years ago for about $8 shipped.

Got mine today (ordered the day this thread was posted). Looks interesting. Does this have a motorised soft-eject? Seems to, but figured I'd check. (some cheapy slot load CD players have a mechanical eject)

How do you get the front off? I've found the tab on the bottom, both sides, and the then to pry up at the top, but it's not coming off. I'd like to take it off and trim off the excess plastic at the top that serves no purpose. (it'd fit in a normal laptop bay if you remove the front or trim the plastic down)

Now to figure out whether to get an adapter to go to 40-pin desktop IDE or 44-pin notebook IDE, since likely this will be paired with an SBC system I'm building.

There are different adapters out there. I'm guessing one designed for an iMac drive should work (iMac slimline drives have a recessed connector and are upside down compared to most). Look on SFF/HTPC sites, there should be posts about different adapters.

Expensive buggers:
http://www.midwestmac.com/page61.html - $25, cheapest I found
http://www.welovemacs.com/9224027.html - $40, but has a really good picture of the adapter

These won't be upsidedown, but after looking through old posts on mp3car.com, I'm not sure that it's deaper than the other adapters. Appearently all slimline slot-load CDs/DVDs have connectors rotated 180 degrees compared to slimline tray-load CD/DVDs. I've been unable to find non-Apple slot-load adapters

Apple iMac slot load CD to IDE part no. 922-4027 or 820-1050-A.

I remember seeing a slimline CD adapter that was basically square, that would probably work with both slot-load and tray-load drives, but I can't find it now.

I discovered the upside down connector the hard way - however, with a slight bit of work with my dremel tool, and a particularly empty case (IBM Netvista case), I was able to get a normal adapter to work. Unfortunately, the CD-ROM had to be mounted upside down. In this case, though, it shouldn't be a problem - as the target system is a router. :)

As it happens, it was a good thing - otherwise, I would have had problems routing the ATA cable. Now, it sticks out to the side, making the cable easy to route.

If you still have one of these, but haven't bought an adapter yet, I found a new part number for and cheaper price for the adapter:

Part-no. 922-4525

Mac Pro has it for $23, not much lower in price compared to MidWestMac, but they have cheaper shipping (~$6 versus ~$10, for me)

How do you get power to the drive with the Mac adaptors?

:/ I had forgotten about that. The iMac adapter breaks the JAE-50 into an IDC-50. Basically power goes through the same connector as IDE. I need to find the pinouts for it again. If I remember right, you line up pin 1 from an IDE 40 pin cable with pin 1 on the IDC-50, ignore the next two pins (bend them out of the way, or off) then the top four is for power, and the bottom four is for analog audio out.

This post on the MP3 car forums has pictures showing how to hook 40-pin IDE and power to it easily, as well as the full pinout for the IDC 50 (pinout doesn't look right to me, maybe I'm just looking at it wrong, the pictures give me enough data anyway). I'm planning to build a 44 pin adapter cable, as my SBC that I'll be using it with uses notebook IDE headers.

I've been able to successfully test all of the drives that I bought. One drive did not load the disc properly. It was a easy to repair by replacing a small spring into it's correct position.
