Paying your dues...

I just got off the phone with Codeman. (Mr. Linux Hacker to anyone who doesn't know.) He's doing well, but the company he used to work for ran out of funds, and he's now "on vacation for a while".

Codeman is far too humble to ever wear his problems on his face. (I had to tell him over 15 times to post a PayPal or Amazon link on the site. Bandwidth costs, especially every time he gets slash-dotted.)

I've spent far too many hours tinkering with all kinds of machines thanks to this board. I feel it's more then fair to give a little back to him. For all of those that haven't and can, just send him a few coins off the Amazon link up top, to extend his vacation. I did, and it's past due: Order Summary #700105727308, $20. I'm sure he's interested in any job offers too!?

So bottom line, Codeman may be too humble to beg, but I'm not. Apologies in advance to anyone who might be offended by this.

PS - Codeman, don't bother erasing this thread unless you take away my admin. rights. Please don't ;)

done..

i can't give a lot but considering the knowledge that this site has given I'm chipping in 25bucks.

thanks Codeman for the hosting and if you are a Perl expert willing to reloc to the south, drop me a line.

Codeman emailed me: "and thanks for the message on the bbs ..it will cover the bandwidth for another year"

He also said Amazon doesn't tell him who on the BBS made the donation, so if you want a personalized thank you (thanks bobm, and the rest!), drop him a line, if not the above is a blanked thanks from Codeman.

Cause in the end, we're all a community.

I just kicked in a twenty -- which feels pretty stingy on my part given the hundreds of hours of fun this site provided for me for the past few years! Thanks, Codeman, for blazing the trail.

Codeman:

Now that you have some "idle" time, how about generating some income by offering a CD containing the historical postings from the BBS.

I've been suggesting for some time that the wealth of information contained in the postings should not be lost. I, for one, have a dozen or so virgin iOpeners that I have projects planned for, and would hate to see this information source disappear before I get them all hacked. By the time I get a project going I have usually forgotten the intimacies of the various hacks, and need to review the posts to get going again. Having all of the iOpener posts on CD would be a GREAT IDEA!

I would be interested in paying for a copy, and am sure that others would as well.

CD Backup:

I was talking to Codeman about this request. He said in the past he's considered this, but had the following concerns:

- Technical Implementation (how to back it up, in a way they ppl can use from a CD)
- Intellectual Property / Information Abuse (e.g., He'd be irked if someone bought a CD and setup their own site w/ the info.)

There might have been more like: time, distro., etc.., but those are the big ones he had.

So, he's thinking about it. If anyone has a clever solution to the first concern, let me know via email.

I would find it sufficient to simply have a directory of the individual text messages, on which a text search utility could do keyword searches.

Not elegant, but adequate.
