Sorry, this question just doesn't fit anywhere else.
The IPOD seems to be linux based - after trying to replace the HDD in one I find a lack of quality hacking on these devices that could maybe be addressed on IABBS?
http://www.ipodhacks.com and http://www.ipodlounge.com have lots of software to do things like put news, weather and text files on your ipod. I haven't seen anything like hacking or replacing the ipod's OS yet though, perhaps to display pictures or videos or play games.
Real easy to open - board, battery, display and HDD inside.
To open: Model 2 there are no clips on the top(by the switch and headphone jack) one small clip on either side of the data port on the bottom and 5 big clips on each side.

I grew my thumbnails for a month to help :) - gently pry and insert some thin plastic strips to keep the space while you move on to another area - take your time and it opens right up, just be patient, gentle and persistent :)
