Interesting. I would imagine that they intended that page for customers - but hey, what the heck. I gave it a go, and I'll see what happens. Now I just need to find some smart cards...

Thanks for the info.

Is there a known way to mod these readers so that they can handle any type of card? (i presume replacing the crystal, but is there an easy way implement a switch to switch between crystal types?)

Also, can these readers also write?

While most Free stuff is Good (!) and I like tinkering which is why I'm here in the first place, what value might a hobbyist extract from a smart card reader???

Edit: Ok I've visited the link above (to shua-z)--shoulda done it before posting, I know!!

I got mine Friday - minus any kind of software. A few minutes of googling for GCR415 produced a linux driver and a (apparently) POSIX compliant app to read and write data on a smartcard. Might be interesting.

Also, I believe WinNT had (I haven't checked Win2k/WinXP) services for smart card readers, where you could use a smartcard to log in, though I remember something about having to replace the GINA DLL or something to that effect.

It is a standard PC/SC reader/writer so any software that reads and writes to these will work just fine. You can download the drivers for it directly from the manufacture.

http://www.gemplus.com/techno/pcsc/resources/reader_driver.html

It is the same as the one called GemPC Serial-SL & Card PC/SC

I am going to try it for secure pc logon for now. Will try it for something else later.

Laserfan,
Smart card readers are useful as-is for just what they are - storage devices. Imagine using a Linux/BSD based laptop, but keeping your login info on a smart card? Or, just keep your SSH keys on it - whatever. I'm not sure, but I believe WindowsNT and Win2k (not sure about XP) have smart card services - so you could use your card to login.

That said, the reader is a way to access more intelligent smart cards - the ones with microprocessors on them. I suppose its usefulness is somewhat dependent on whether you are "into" that sort of thing.

radarman, thanks I figured it out; I ordered one on the strength of this thread (got two, by mistake I presume) and was surprised to find out what it was... That is, it's something Amex offers for Blue card users that allows them to store passwords on their credit card!

I don't have a Blue card, but I do have something called a Metapass and it sounds like using a smart card to carry all your login IDs and passwords and whatnot would be very slick, vs. the Metapass which is a dongle USB thingy that you can attach keys to or wear around your neck.

Clearly the software that is offered by Amex requires a customer relationship--maybe someone here will have one (or get one) and figure out how to build similar functionality w/o the Amex thing. Or maybe you can just get a Blue card and then cancel it later????

laserfan,
Do a google search on GCR415, and you will find there already is software out there for it (assuming you run Linux). I'm not sure if it will work with Windows natively or not, but it might. As soon as I get a chance, I'm planning on compiling the driver, and giving it a go for storing SSH keys. It's totally ridiculous, as I doubt anyone is interested is swiping my server, but it should be a fun project.

BTW - there seems to be a couple of standards for "smart cards", so you should be able to find compatable, blank cards. Ironically, one of the standards looks just like a credit card... ;)

Has anyone got a source of cheap cards?? All I found were blank SIM cards that were $10/card (yikes). Might as well buy a small USB dongle.

Thanks TomC!

My work pc is windows xp and the drivers from GemPlus dont recognize the device. (probably is confused by the American Express Device ID). The diagnostic utility recognizes the reader, however, winblows wont install it on the OS level. (looks like the Device ID is not in its database of devices for the driver) :( Anyone got that working?

Does your diagnostic utility give you a device ID Number? If you have that you
can probably edit the driver .ini file and add that device number.
Worth a try.
