CVS on Monday began selling a disposable digital camcorder which the No. 2 U.S. drugstore chain hopes will boost its photo lab business and be as popular as the single-use film and digital cameras.

The $29.99 pocket-size camcorder was developed by Pure Digital Technologies, a San Francisco-based start-up company.

The camcorder weighs under 5 ounces and holds 20 minutes of digital video and sound. It features a 1.4 inch color playback screen and an ability to delete video, and it saves video on a memory chip instead of tapes but it has no zooming capability.

After shooting, customers have to return the recyclable camcorder to their local CVS stores and its contents would then be transferred onto a DVD disc to view and share for a $12.99 processing fee.

Clue:
MPAA's position in support of DMCA is something like:

WHOEVER MAKES A MOVIE HAS ALL OF THE COPY RIGHTS TO IT!

That obviously includes the right to make your own copies
of your own movie that's in the camera you bought!

Do they seriously expect people to pay $30 + $13 to record 20 minutes of video? I would guess there's a cheap camera on ebay that will do that for under $150...

They're a huge hit at weddings and other similar events.

Easy to buy large quantities to distribute amongst the crowd, and it's no biggie to replace single units if they're damaged or lost. 'Sure would hate to do that with a bunch of $150 camcorders.

Just doesn't seem like there'd be enough weddings in need of cameras to warrant selling such a product nation wide. I'll certainly buy one to hack, but I don't expect them to be around any longer than any of the other toys we like to violate around here.

All kinds of legitimate applications here.

I keep one in my car, "just in case". Living in Las Vegas, I have to deal with a lot of crappy (and uninsured!) drivers. With the camcorder, I can just hit record, do a walk-through of the damage, get a visual of where the involved cars were, and record faces, license plates, and oral statements. (Handy if they ever admit guilt and later deny it.. heheh)

Haven't needed to use it in this way yet (knocks on wood), but it's good to know I've got it there. I used to keep a disposable, but always worried that the film would be ruined by the heat. These camcorders are perfect.

Some people use 'em in model helicopters, rockets, and airplanes.. at $25, it's easy to use these as toys.

This camera was already hacked several months ago. The build for the the cable is usually a palm cradle, and the drivers are on sourceforge.

FYI, that Makezine article is old news, and somewhat outdated.

The current CVS Camcorders (with firmware version 3.62) have long since closed the software holes. People are complaining that Ebay sellers are shipping custom-made cables along with these newer 3.62 cameras.. which is pointless without some tricky hardware hacking on the camera.

Two common hardware exploits exist, but both the "6+7 short" and the more recent "pin 9 short" techniques have been confirmed to kill some of the cameras they've been tried on.
