ePodsOne announced
new internet appliance

New MessageePodsOne announced (modified 0 times) scriptdaddy
ePods (at http://www.epods.com) introduces their new ePodsOne network appliance.

it has a touchscreen but rather backward in other respects.

not likely hackable, since it requires a 36-month service agreement, and costs $199 up front.

Clickable link here:

Here's the link with the specs:
http://www.epodsinc.com/corporate/epodsone/specs.html

It's unhackable for those of us with a taste for hard drives. It's got a risc processor, probably an ARM or something similar, and it's running Windows CE.

It is definitely not "worse" than the Iopener: not only does it have a touchscreen, but an 8-hour battery, a PCMCIA slot, infrared, a serial port, and a compact-flash slot. The only part that lags behind the Iopener is the 8" screen with 640x480 resolution. This thing is just begging for in-car use.

Yeah, definitely not 'worse' than a iopener.
The RISC chip is a Toshiba MIPS (R400x or R500x, I forget now) series, a very nice cpu. Definitely a Linux or other *nix platform, since egcs will target mips cpus. BTW Mips is a very nice cpu to code for, assembly on the R3000 series is very slick.

Still too expensive tho.

Probably hackable, but an expensive hack ($25/month). The website mentions a wireless upgrade; that would be really nice. We're not too far away from the portable tablets they use in the more recent Star Trek shows... all we need is Bluetooth or other wireless technology running in the home, office, malls, restaurants. It exists, it's just a matter of bringing cost down and refinements up.

"Charter" members get a discount, so the cheapest way to get one is:

"...you can pay $518 upfront for an ePodsOne including 12 months of Internet service. (Reg. price: $648)"

Still too expensive; on-screen keyboard doesn't make a lot of sense unless you are sitting by the pool and how many of us have a pool. Netpliance has spoiled us all.

Come on. For $499 you can get a Pocket PC and add a $99 modem and use worldspy ISP all for free. I could see if the price was for wireless access, but it isn't.

get real!

for comparable but worse device (windows ce tablet h/pc PA-2400, 80Mhz SH3, 480x240) Casio charge you $800.

here for $520 you get better device + 1 year free internet (worth of $10/mo, check other plans and try plaing with numbers) => device only comes to you for $400. what a steal, huh?

you may consider the 3-year plan... there is a good chance they'd go off bussiness till then and you'll keep your device, you can connect to any isp, upgrade winCE... whatever.

This thing really IS begging for in-car use.

A lot of GPS systems are CE compatible now, and with the screen being the size that it is, and a touch interface to boot, this thing is perfect for mounting inside my Ram pickup.
