official site.

Gizmodo article all about this Gentoo Linux-based mini PC (including screenshots).

"There's a cheap computer on the way that undercuts them all, the $99 Zonbu, due this summer in a silent-running form factor that's about the size of a paperback book. It has 4GB of flash memory on board, and automatically backs up a copy of your data online. Besides that $99 purchase price, you'll also pay $12.95 a month (for 25GB,scales up to 100GB for more money) to store its data on the Zonbu servers, giving you the ability to compute anywhere with this tiny device, or access your data from other PCs. If you don't commit to a service plan, the little PC costs $250."

I'm sure that somebody will break it from the confines of its subscription service.

D'oh! I should have read thru their site. My hastily copy-pasted quote even says "If you don't commit to a service plan, the little PC costs $250."
Become root, add some apps, connect it to the home network, add a USB hard drive and you're good to go.

...They even have a 'developer' section that has instructions for that 'root' thing you are talking about...

Only problem I see is an old GPL snag (aka "violation of license"): they don't distribute the code they used. Instead they tell you go get it yourself and then download the patches they've made to end up with their source code. I have found that this more often than not results in code that doesn't actually match their production code, whether by intent or sloppiness.

It now comes with free updates and 2GB of storage. I made a mistake before...no KB/mouse. Actually it did say with KB/mouse but turned out to be a mis-wording on their part.

Mmm, I would probably look at the Cappuccino PC line of things - they have some AMD CPU versions and lower prices in some cases than this is at the $250 mark. At $99 this would have been a good deal.
