Digital camera usb command support

Complete "newbie" here - never dreamed of hacking a digital camera until a few hours ago.

What I need to do is include four machine generated image-specific digits with each image as it is snapped.
Choice of camera is not a problem - it just has to do the deed. Ideally a little PIC processor could assemble a command
that we fire down the USB port to UPDATE the EXIF data or RENAME the image file by appending the four digits on the end of the file
name. We're trying to avoid using a 16-bit microcontroller with all the bells and whisles. We can disable additional shutter snaps until the job is done. We have tons of power on the backend pc after the upload to extract the digits and update the image accordingly. The idea is to hide each images four digits with the image so the vendor upload stuff works as usual.
