Micron offers a 3 meg cmos imager - MT9T001 which is backyard compatible with the original Dakota MT9M001.
I expect resoldering to more difficult than updating software, and it may be too costly to obtain a MT9T001.

One great advantage of new chip is that it supports longer shutter widths making it possible to have 50 second exposures.
