I have added a simple tool to my usbtool archive that allows the full 16MB image to be downloaded from a Linux box. You can get it from http://www.bluedonkey.org/cgi-bin/twiki/bin/view/Linux/DakotaPv2Camera where there are also instructions for stripping the MBR & partition tables that the Linux loop mounter doesn't seem to want (I guess I could have done this in the download code

It will cope with the two sets of challenge/response blocks that I found (the original one and the one for folks, like me, with the serial number zeroed out).

If I get a chance over the holiday, I will try to clean it up a bit and make it do some other things (like directory listing). It would be very nice to get it to the point that I could just mount the camera as a file system directly, so I might see about that as well - should be possible to modify one of the mass storage device drivers I would think (I know how to read and write blocks after all). That would avoid the need to actually work out the file open/close commands.

Similar to j94501's Linux Utility I have a utility for Win32:

To make the working with the camera easier I've written a user friendly utility to unlock
the camera and download the 16Meg flash.
http://mysite.verizon.net/forkboy/PV2Tool.zip

The files can be extracted from the 16Meg image using this freeware utility:
http://www.softwarium.com/divwin.html

I hope to work on it some more over the next week...

I uploaded a new version of PV2Tool that will allow you to display .TFT files on the Camera LCD display.

Additionally I have created a new tool to view TFTs on the PC and convert bitmaps to .TFT files.

Both are available with VC++ 6 source at http://forkboy.doesntexist.com

And remember, viewing bitmaps on the PV2 is fun.

4 all 2004 has passed (final click of last clock just 1/2 hour ago). Any signature screen should honor and give permanence to the source 4 hack by including a reference to "1 2 many 4 all" Linux_Hacker.net threads.

Happy 1/1/2004+1 (5 is really just a binary 4 and 1 bit).

PV2 is 2 restrictive as it only appears on Ritz cameras. How about a "A SMaL step 4 hackers, a leap 4 SMaL imagers"? Of course we still need to complete compression decipher, but if Fife sees brite_lite of New Year and endorses open source showing up here as fife4all we can conclude our final phase. 2 all please leave all potential fife pseudonyms open (we believe in open source).

binaryweaver has woven and proven! Great Site! Like your cats. Still waiting to see morcheeba's cat - please someone show us morcheeba's cat before he proves he is Supreme (just take it all in as pure complimentary admiration of a living genius) and the only one needed to provide a simple firmware upload that obsoletes all other methods.

binaryweaver, Please give us page visit counters - we so far have no good idea how many are watching! Can you include a check for any pseudonyms, IDs, agents ... with an embedded Fife?

nice job binaryweaver!

(briteeye- I think the easiest way to get my cat would be to put the image back on the flash & suck it out with the fox z2 driver. Or I could solder that flash chip back into my camera)

Thanks, morcheeba. Why didn't I think of that? Your cat is about to be had! My plan is even a little simpler - write you cat to my SD card, place it in my blue FlatFoto (may not work, wish I'd kept the red also) and download. Is there a version of pv2tool that can easily write files back under /DCIM/RAW directory?

I can do better than a counter. I set up a copy of the access.log on the site.
I made a batch file that copies access.log to the web directory and renames it to traffic.log.
Scheduled task updates it everyday at 9am and 9pm. I've found that you have to clear your browser cache
if you visit it more than once. Otherwise, you may be downloading the log out of your cache instead of from
the site. Keep in mind that I'm not just hosting the camera site, so the log will show everything.

The URL is the same as my camera site, just add the /traffic.log to the end of the URL.

If anyone is uncomfortable with this, I understand and I'll take it down.

binaryweaver, interesting amount of detail, but most of the time I'd rather just see a counter. Can you display a cummulative counter? I have no discomfort and the level of detail may prove useful, but for now my main interest is number of hits.

Please use version 2.05 of PV2Tool available here:
http://forkboy.doesntexist.com

Version 2.04 was a test development release not intended for the general public.

Changes in version 2.05:
1. Directory Read fix - Sometimes there would be uninitialized "garbage" in the directory sectors causing PV2Tool to hang or report non-existent files
2. Nicer colors on the progress bar
3. A speaker "Beep" when 16MBs reads/writes successfully finish

Please post requests for further enhancements.
*No Firmware patching until I get some feedback with what has worked for others, including which bytes where changed and a file checksum before and after.

I have uploaded a new version of PV2Tool - v2.06 Beta

http://forkboy.doesntexist.com/

Changes:

1. Further filtered directory entries
It looks like some Windows drivers write uninitialized memory in the directory sectors.
Ordinarly there would be 0x00s or valid / deleted file entry structures, but sometimes there is junk which looks like bad files.
Now only valid files should be reported.

2. Added the option to verify flash writes

3. Added a percentage to the progress bar.

For newbies - The basic usage is:
A. Connect yor camera with a USB cable
B. Press "Find Camera"
C. Press "Connect"
D. Press "Unlock Reset" or "Unlock New" (Depending on the state of your camera)
E. Download Flash / Get Directory list & download + upload files, etc.
- If you select a .TFT you can upload a .BMP and it will be converted to a .TFT
- TFTs can be previewed on the camera.....

* If you want to patch the Firmware.bin file you will need to download it and patch it yourself with a hex editor, then upload the patched version.
Look through the threads for more details. BE CAREFUL, your camera will not work if you make a mistake when changing Firmware.Bin

Got a 6410, after trying to hack the firmware, I get three low beeps when trying to turn on the camera, or when connected to usb. Running the PV2Mod util when I connect I get one beep, but no light... I am unable to unlock... Any suggestions on how I can fix this? Also, what changes need to be made on the 6410 27 firmware.bin file?

I have created the first release of PV2DevKit. It's available here http://pv2devkit.sourceforge.net/

It contains:
...A Macro Assembler for Arclite/v8 uRISC.
...A Linker for Arclite/v8 uRISC.
...Assembly source code examples.
...The PV2UploadCode utility, a fork of Forkboy's PV2Tool utility,
which uploads a program to the PV2's RAM and executes it.

The source examples are pretty minimal right now. I hope to add to them as I learn to interface with the hardware. Contributions to that end would be most welcome.

I tweaked up the pv2flag source to include a patching engine and firmware checksum fixer, and dubbed it "pv2patch".

pv2patch is available at the pv2devkit sourceforge site here: http://sourceforge.net/projects/pv2devkit/

Optional patches currently include:
...camera unlock
...change camera PID (foxz2, flatfoto2, or virgin)
...camera mute (gets rid of the beeping)

As in pv2flag, all firmware revisions *should* work. All patches are reversable and have been tested in various combinations on my T30-6520 and T27-6430 cameras. Pv2patch can also be used to fix the checksum of a firmware you have modified yourself. Additionally, it still informs you of the locations of patchable features.

BillW : thanks for making your tools available. I was goofing around with them last night on a CVS "red"
that is "fried" (i.e. two beeps when it is plugged into a WinXP USB port, but no LCD screen) and managed to
get it to download 2.7MB of data a couple of times. Has anyone else had this happen? I don't think these
things are nearly as dead as they initially seem...

FWIW, I have an original Ritz Dakota that is happily talking to the SUCR software, this CVS "red" and two,
still-in-the-box CVS "blue" cameras. Ideally, I'd like to get a mod to these that allow for a long exposure
time, as my hobby is astronomy. If in the exploration of the firmware, anyone stumbles across the means
by which the exposure length is determined, I'd like to hear about it.

Also (for BillW) : a couple of times I've gotten I/O errors relating to what appear to be overlapping
communications on the port. Would it be possible to have a "listen" mode to one of your tools, whereby
one can send it some data (either from the console or a file) and then it just listens for some defined
period of time, writing whatever it hears to a file? Or perhaps the user could define a data sequence to
be a "ping" that would be sent to the camera at a certain frequency, during which time the s/f would listen
and record? I ask, only after having tried and failed to find some simple source code to compile that
would do this.

Matt
