Here I am again, can't sleep thinking about 4 all. I suggest waiting till the count on this thread passes 8. The first post should be a description of at least 2 photos that were taken and downloaded long after the camera had shut itself off, with a link to the photos so people can make their own decisions on avoiding scribble's (mine also) concern "something that doesn't make for good pictures of Susie opening her XMas presents". The second post after this should be a link to where you can buy a cable - probably ebay. The third post should be a single windows application that does it all. The 4-8 entries will probably be things like it doesn't work on Longs and new releases. Please be patient and do not post questions here but rather use "Questions - 1 2 many 4 all" thread.

Please continue to be patient, we are making rapid progress and can now complete first post described above:

Ritz Red http://www.photo.net/photodb/folder?folder_id=453271

CVS Blue http://www.photo.net/photodb/folder?folder_id=456813

I think I can see an extended dynamic range!! Please do not post here, but rather use Suggestions and Questions 1 2 many 4 all threads.

There have been only 3 confirmations of buster's process posted at top of CVS Red & Blue and bottom of Success 1 2 many 4 all threads. Several have failed and appear to have given up. jonnie, please try again with canon (scanner?) turned off (or better disconnected from PC) along with other unnecessary USB devices including your Labtec Headset. If there are others trying, be sure to remove all prior attempts (control panel remove and not repair) and disconnect all unneeded USB devices. Then run Foxz2 setup.exe and follow buster's process. If successful place a brief note here describing modifications you used to make it work or if it just as listed state that.

morceeba has a process for older Ritz 6410s using software on a Mac. There have been no confirmations of that yet. I expect someone will be able to port it to Windows before the end of this month (and with luck add CVS camera firmware offsets). The beauty of his process is that it only needs to be successfully performed 1 time.

There have been only 3 confirmations of buster's process posted at top of CVS Red & Blue and bottom of Success 1 2 many 4 all threads.

Make it 4. Here's what I've found, following BinaryWeavers directions using the modified driverx.inf simplified from buster, I've gotten it to work on one PC reliably. I still need to plug and unplug multiple times to get it out of "boot loader mode", but once it get past that point, we're ok.

A side note, all three machines I've tried this on is Winblows XP SP2. The VIA chipset works fine if and only if I unplug ALL usb devices before running PV2tool. Else PV2TOOL runs in the background and I can't end task it and I can't bring it forward. My Intel chipset based USB 2.0 laptop always, always, and always BSOD on me when I try the Fox2 drivers and then PV2Tool... I can install the libusb alone and unlock the camera and download firmware fine. So my guess is something messed up with those twain drivers. Third PC is a really old P3 system, and that's the one I extract pictures with.

I edited the foxz2 install directory INF, and copied libusb0.dll into that directory too. Then I ran Setup from Foxz2. After connecting the camera, I point my "found new hardware" driver thing to that directory with everything in it with the corrected INF file to include the libusb stuff, it will find everything it needs based on it being in that directory.

Make that "me too" or me 3.. I got 3 pictures off of the camera last night, then a crash of the Foxz driver and that was it.. Still, I'm glad to have any success, and here's a page with the pictures and more info. Thanks 2 all 4 staying with this project!

Ansel please place a link to picture #2 in Photo - 1 2 many 4 all thread. The final decision is yours of course, but my goal is to create a cycle of successes with copies of pictures and links back to originator who then has links to others successes in an infinite loop of success. I just modified intro to that thread (at its current bottom) to indicate a release of such photos just to other successful member's pages. From 1 2 all 4 all to see.

cheapseats, you indicate an interest in creating cables for ebay using palm connector. Would palm end have to filed to fit in cameras or worse - cameras cut to allow it to fit? I spent way too much time getting my palm cable to fit in an unmodified camera case.

It's not a good idea to "market" the premade cables on eBay. There could possibly be some legal ramifications. I remember when the original Hacked Dakotas came out the cables were going for $20 expensive for a 4 dollar cable! I popped out a bunch of these cables for my friends using the Palm Pilot M100 Palm serial link cable the hardest part was getting the torques driver screws out. I used a jeweler's eyeglass screwdriver I think it's T-5 torques? In any case it's certainly worth investing in. the torques driver as for the modifications in the connector once I got it apart I had no problems filing it down simple commonsense will guide you it really doesn't have to be too accurate a filing job I used a old bench grinder but my friend simply used a sharpening stone and had no problems in fact his looks nicer. Don't forget to remove the tabs on the sides of the Palm Pilot connector, don't attempt to remove the entire chrome little part of it just the tabs with needle nose pliers are fingernail clippers work also if you're tool deficient here's a eBay link for the type connector I used. and if you pay more than 4 dollars you're being robbed!

I'm new here so bear with me.

First, if you search Pricegrabber the M-100 Palm cables can be had for a fixed price of about $3.25 (buck .49 + shipping ea). They are the genuine Palm cables not the clones. Vendor had 3-400 & I got 2 day delivery.

I have a couple of Reds from Wolf I've been playing with. I managed to reset one to the LAM-GARBAGE ID somehow, the other is still (they both were) firmware ver. 6430. I went through the Binaryweaver's routines for setting up for Windows (XPSP2). The reset camera needs to be unlocked each time with the PV2 tool (older version) before Irfanview will download pics otherwise I get bootloader message. The new version of PV2 tools won't unlock or recognize the camera. And, I can't get any other photo software to recognize the camera. The camera will only download a couple of (excellent quality) pics before Irfanview upchucks. Ideas?

The other camera appears to be unlockable according to the new PV2 tool but I can't get Irfanview to get out of the "bootloader" error message mode when trying to get pics. I've gone through all the plug-unplug -reboot options multiple times.

Been doing this on my laptop as about all I do with it is mail stuff. My other machine (XPSP2)won't run either version of PV2tool, shuts down and wants to write home. But, it has lots of USB stuff and the laptop doesn't.

unclebill, hey your not my real uncle are you? I have an Uncle Bill that works at a pharmacy in a (red I think) eastern state. I sometimes get the bootloader error and it seems that nothing will work and then magically after doing another driver update (no unplug or reboot) it does work, but then only sometimes and then I have to try other things such as downloading flash before it works. I am still hoping for a nonfrying one-time use "ZAP" that will work for all. Realistically that could still be months away.

For some of my latest examples showing just how bad and good these cameras can be please take a look at my coverage of Detroit's Winter Blast event (a preparation for Super Bowl 2006): http://www.photo.net/photodb/folder?folder_id=466545 - A total of 40 pictures selected from a group of 175 taken with 2 Red CVS cameras and 2 Blue CVS cameras.

I made my cable according to information found on http://cexx.org/dakota/

Pin 10: Ground (Black)
Pin 9: Data - (White)
Pin 8: Data + (Green)
Pin 6: +5V (Red)

yet at http://www.maushammer.com/systems/dakotadigital/usb-cable.htm

I find the instructions below

6 USB +5V power
Connects to red wire.
7 USB Ground
Connects to black wire (you can also use pin 2 or 10).
8 USB Data +
Connects to green wire.
9 USB Data -
Connects to white wire.
10 Ground

apparently one is wrong or the older non pv camera uses a different pin out.

which is true?

If you have not read everything in every thread twice then you need to wait untill an easier method is created, confirmed, and placed in a new thread with step by step detail that never fails. This could be several months away.

If you have installed libusb and the test program fails to enumerate your camera then you may have conflicting USB drivers that must be fully deinstalled (can be very problematic).

You also might have better luck with an older version of PV2Tool - http://mysite.verizon.net/forkboy/PV2Tool203.zip

After reading these threads and various sites linked here, I converted a couple of the "CVS red" cameras. I put together a website that documents the whole process: creating a cable, installing the software, mod'ing the firmare, etc. It may be helpful for some of the people looking for a complete "howto" page. http://vickers.homedns.org/PV2mods.htm

@Tango

Have you tried using PV2Tool2 to download and upload only Firmware.bin? (download, copy, modify with a hex editor, and upload)
This would save you the step of using Winimage and downloading/uploading the entire 16MB flash...

Thanks for the great page!

Got a 6410, after trying to hack the firmware, I get three low beeps when trying to turn on the camera, or when connected to usb. Running the PV2Mod util when I connect I get one beep, but no light... I am unable to unlock... Any suggestions on how I can fix this? Also, what changes need to be made on the 6410 27 firmare.bin file?

I have the blue version of the camera

I soldered a usb connector but still have not been able to get it to work
when I turn it on I get the following numbers 65, 10, 28.

I've looked through the boards a bit but can't find how to get this working. I'm debating tossing it and concentrating on a red cvs 6410

The last time I fiddled with it I followed the best directions I could find for the 6410. Everything seemed to run OK and install OK but ofcourse it is not a 6410 so when I go to install the camera xp tells me that the location does not have information about my device.

The camera still works as far as I can tell but I believe the ini file is not correct

Hey, I have it all modded and everything, however when i try to install the foxz driver, it says that it cannot load the dll file needed for installation! Is there other softwware i can use to circumvent this, an alternate installation for this program, or a way to fix this problem? Do I need to move the installation dll libraries to the windows directory? Thanks!

elamall, don't bother copying install dll's into the Windows directory. When a program tries to access a dll, the current directory is the first place that Windows tries to find the dll.

It sounds like Windows either can't open the dll for some reason (permissions, corruption) or something else is triggering the error. Possibly the dll the installer needs has a dependancy on a system dll that isn't present.

A few things that would help us help you - does it mention a specific dll when you get the error message - in fact the full error message would be better? Also, which version of Windows are you running?

I took a look at the possibility of manually unpacking the necessary files, but that doesn't look to promissing. You can open up the installer in winzip/winrar, but the files you need from it are in a CAB format that winzip/winrar doesn't understand. Additionally, it looks like the foxz2 installer makes a bunch of registry entries too. Better to get the installer working on your system instead of trying to end-run the problem.

Thank you for your help. I am running Windows Xp home. After I select English, the instalsheild wizard comes up and then the error "An installation support file could not be installed. Error loading type Library/DLL." THis is after I unzipped the files for the windows XP version. The only option is ok, which cancels the install program.

I'm working on the magic to convert SMaL's RAW format to an image, but my programming wand is taking it's time to learn this new trick. Look for updates in the "Decompression -..." thread.

For now the only option is to read back through all these forum threads and figure out how others are using the Che-ez Foxz2 TWAIN driver (or RadioShack FlatFoto 2MP driver) to download and convert the images.
