I believe this is the first posted picture from a camera that was completely filled and taken off in the compressed form. I think people got this before me, but to my knowledge this is the first one posted :)

It was very foggy today (and I should have shut the flash off with my 25 cent piece) but I had to try. This image is off the CVS Blue about 120 feet up (I couldn't go much higher on account of loosing sight of my plane). I found a second use for the flash though it makes a nice stobe.

Well the fog cleared today and it even warmed up to 57. I flew the CVS Blue and left flash on but next time I will cover it see what happens. I had Shutterbug switch set for auto shoot every 20 seconds. I really need to set it up off of another channel so I can point and then shoot but the Superstar only has three channels right now. Images taken at full throttle as I climbed to about 600 ft or so. Pictures of Makelsfield, cemetary and Delaware river.

Nice old daktoa, not so nice new PV2. Not sure why, but it seems new CVS blues are a bit better than the lcd reds or Long lcd blues. Yours looks out of focus - especially the trees. I have had similar problems with all SMaLs that I thought initially was shaky hands, but some parts seem to be in focus. Others have commented that outer edges show degradation - this may be due to a much smaller lens in the SMaLs. With a monopod and a modified focusable lens, I think you will find you can do better. It may also be that non lcd units have less electronic buzz creating a better sharper image - some of my best are blues with timer set. I am still looking for proof of autobrite - may have found it in my Sun shots, but need to compare with old dakota. Here is a link to my photo.net portfolio and I specifically deny free photo use as described at beginning and extended in the middle. http://www.photo.net/shared/community-member?user_id=1135234 Take a look and help me back to google top - a High School teacher with same real name just over took me yesterday (he has an interesting educational motto - "It's not the thing you fling, it's the fling itself.").

Good comparison shots Drmn4ea. While I like the warmer PV2 tint more, there are many more compression artifacts in that picture. I've gotten some good pictures from my red PV2, but also some terrible ones too. I found outdoor scenes seem to be the best, but tree leaves always look like they were painted on with watercolors. I wonder if the artifacts are caused by compression in the camera, or something in the Foxz driver.. I'd rather have half as many pictures of higher quality, or photos stored as jpegs. With 16 megs of storage, that's 640K max per picture. I've done tests on 1280x960 images, and in most cases have been able to get Quality 90-100% in under 640K; the pictures look much better than my Dakota shots do too. Maybe it's asking too much from a camera at this price. My PV2 is my first digital camera, and I am thankful for what it does do..

With the comparison shots as posted, I prefer the classic to the PV2 at this point. If anything, I noticed more saturation in the PV2 Autobrite(tm)d shot (see the white pants of the man leaning on the fence in the background); also, see the bricks to the left of Confucius' head and left side in the PV2 shot...my imagination, or did they perform some kind of cellular division while I was fumbling in my pocket for the cam? For now anyway, I think any comparison is meaningless so long as the Windows driver insists on postprocessing the fertilizer out of the images. You might notice there are JPEG artifacts in both...especially evident if you crank the gamma in a just-downloaded dark PV2 image...yes folks, the Foxz2 driver is returning it as a lossy JPEG, completely defeating the purpose of having a crazy, lossless* compression format on your camera! I don't know if anyone has yet posted a list of the postprocess filters the Foxz2 driver applies, but it's exhaustive - if no one has, I'll fish it out of the DLL and post it.

@brite_eye: Faster than a sleeping bullet, more powerful than a toy locomotive... able to leave tall buildings with a single bound! Whereever there is patching, jiggering, crude hackery, jerry-rigging or bush jobbing to be done, Duct Tape Man is there to lend a helping roll (err, hand). Yep, that's the Octoberween outfit that almost didn't make me not famous. Cexx.org was recently migrated over to a new web host; there are some minor snags yet in moving the databases over (the web boards alone expand to a 400+ meg SQL query!), so it'll be a few days yet before all the database-driven stuff (including bloggg) are up and running again.

*SMaL has a very creative definition of 'lossless', going by the compression patent application - it throws away LSBs until the compressed image reaches the target size...

@brite_eye: Slider, whazzat? I'm using Paint Shop Pro to call the TWAIN driver, which writes out the JPEG temp files directly into C:\Documents and settings\timmay1\... (had to watch it write them in Filemon since it was crashing before the load-images-into-PSP stage initially; this was when the driver was choking on the cutline black I had as the first image), then loads them back into the imaging program. It goes "thunk, thunk, thunk" like a pirate with a wooden leg. Unless the setting of JPEG level happens before the file gets written and actually passed into the Foxz2 driver somehow, I'd think the damage has already been done.

Is IrfanView's slider part of IrfanView, or does it somehow enable extra features on the Foxz2 driver itself?

Not bad for first pictures - Iron Horse Music Hall sign is very readable. In low light with a slower shutter you have to be almost dead to avoid blur. Try some shots outdoors in bright sunlight. All these fixed focus cameras seem to have best focus at varying distances. Take several shots of same scene from different vantage points. I think I am doing well with 2-4 good ones out of 25.

Some picture images taken today during ill-fated flight over Makelsfield in Yardley,PA off the CVS Blue with the flash covered with a quarter. It was very windy today so the flight was with full throttle during entire flight. The shutter was set up to shoot automatically every 20 seconds.

The flight was ill fated because the plane was totaled into one of those menacing light poles. The camera is no longer functioning because it sustained some damage to the flash components (i.e. flash ripped off, flash coil broken, etc.) but I was able to retrieve the images. I am printing out a coupon right now and on my way to CVS to purchase a new one. This is why I wanted a cheap camera to use for this purpose.

Obviously, we need more sunshine. With more sunshine I'm sure the colors and contrasts would be much more interesting to look at. But what are you going to do.

Sorry, Drmn4ea & others, I did not back up far enough and left an important question unanswered. Before the driver starts to convert Irfan view provides the slider; I believe that during download an expanded 3.14 MB raw file is produced that either contains a 1MB bayer plus 2MB of autobrite, or 3 color 1MB interpolated raws. The interaction between driver and photo processing software is critical to quality results. Please try Irfan view (100% jpeg slider) if you are not satisfied with your pictures.

Briteeye, I don't think the Irfanview jpeg quality slider controls Foxz at all. It seems that Foxz passes a picture to Irfanview, and then Irfanview re-saves it. Mostly I set Irfan' to save as PNG or BMP, thinking that might avoid further loss. A good test to do: Compare BMP to JPG by unchecking the 'delete pictures from camera' boxz on Foxz, download the same pics using different settings and compare.. I really like Irfan' to acquire from my Dakota, because it loads the pictures and saves them one at a time. In PhotoImpact, if there's an error that causes the program to crash, all pictures that came from the camera before the crash are lost, because they were loaded as temp files.

The good news is, I can get pictures off of the camera every time now. Fresh XP home v.2002, WinLib 0810, Foxz2, Irfanview. I use an older version of PV2 tool, the one before TFT support was added - new ones do not work, even if they say 'unlocked,' I get a boot-to-the-head* loader error. It unlocks immediately, then I start the Irfanview process. One thing I did before getting continuing success was to format, and reset the Dakota's picture counter, which reset to 006.. I got about 100 pictures from a set of alkaline batteries.

To All, I need a volunteer (more then one is fine) to copy at least one success photo from each individual with links to photos above and place in a gallery on their web page. Looking through and following the links in this thread is not very convenient. Feel free after creating such a gallery to add a link to your web site on Links thread.

The terms of use on photo.net prohibit me from posting work that is not 100% mine. I will shortly be removing the photos that I have copied. If anyone knows of a better photo site (less restrictive and more friendly to hacked cheap cameras) than photo.net please indicate in a message here. binaryweaver, Great new shots in you gallery - even a Sun Shot - aren't those fun (I don't think $1000 cameras can produce as good of sunshot with a red disc at center). Did you get a tripod - your photos are looking crisper or is that due to use of flatfoto instead of cheezy?

I think it would be better to just extract photos from this thread than force members to send an email. If they want additional info posted after you copy images to your site, then it would still be nice that you are willing to accept emails. I think there are 10 or 11 successful individuals above - I would expect you stop after say 30 or 50 successes but if new members are still posting you certainly may continue to increase your hits.

ygfperson - go northampton!! I've got a souvenir Harry Belafonte ticket from the Iron Horse. I actually didn't see Harry - he had performed a few days earlier and were reusing his unsold tickets for that nights general admission. Get some ice cream for me, please.

Making of Rocket Fuel - CVS Red 6520 at Arisia. Should have posted these um...a couple weeks ago, when the event actually was. Meh. (Bloggg actually works now, with a description of this unique beverage.)

I may be wrong but I think both of Drmn4ea's photos are excellent examples of SMaL's extended dynamic range showing both light and dark misty swirls (would not look as good using $500 cameras). Did you generate any interest in latest photographic advances at Arisia (or is Autobrite just science fiction)?

Another addition to copyright claims - While any photos in this thread may be copied by another successful member, a caption with pseudonym from this thread must be displayed along with photo or thumbnail. In addition a statement offering to remove a copied photo upon owner's request must be present. For a great example of adherence see binaryweaver's gallery: http://www.demanufacturing.com/pv2/12many4all

Sun Fun! SMaL Drugstore Digitals provide increased freedom to shoot towards Sun. Before SMaL, I always tried to keep Sun behind me when taking pictures. Here are my favorite Suns:

He doesn't care if it rains or freezes.

I know, I tend to take pictures for the purpose of documentation, and not bother to properly compose a decently artistic shot Anyway, I saw this while walking to work a few days ago, and it seemed symbolic of something...of what, I'm not entirely sure.

I called my first release of pv2mod the Ueda Station release. It took a while for me to get home and get the corresponding picture off my pv2, but you can now choose either large uncompressed PNG (1.5MB) or smaller JPG (76KB)

10 days and no new photos! Well no blinding Sun just Sticky Snow to start the week off here in Michigan. It stuck to tree branches and power lines like I have never seen before. I thought it was beautiful, but my neighbors and coworkers complained of backbreaking misery. Even before I took time to try and capture the beauty with my hacked cameras I enjoyed a free workout - wet and sticky snow is quite heavy and clogs cheap blowers. I normally spend way too much time in front of computer screens and always enjoy forced outdoor exercise whether it is caused by shifting snow or mowing grass due to rain and sunshine. Sorry for clogged blog (I really need to get my own site).

Here is link - note last 2 pictures are of same stop sign in first succesful hot plugged download months ago. Also note that last one seems to display an Autobrite(tm) bug with a odd veritcal bar. Is that wind shear or a snow ghost in some pictures?

My photos are relatively uninteresting IMO, but here they are anyway. They were made with irfanview and the foxz drivers. In case you're wondering what the device does, it basically lets someone use an authentic JAMMA arcade motherboard on a NTSC TV like a home console. http://www.sgrepository.com/modules/xcgal/index.php?cat=10044

I clearly need a telephoto lens - I did some searching and found some m12x0.5 lenses for the original Dakota. If anyone knows designation of lens size for SMaL imagers please post a link to where some are available. The m12x0.5 size is popular on several webcams and surveillance cameras.

Comparison photos for 1)a 4 yr old JVC GC-QX3U 3.3MP set at med resolution, no optical zoom used (pics named DSC000XX) 2)Dakota Digital/Ritz/Maushammer Original blue and silver camera (Downloaded_DSC_00XX) 3)Digigr8 1.3MP (see that thread for more info) (testpicture800X) 4)CVS6430T27 (scanimage1XX). Pictures were also taken with a CVS6520T30, but remain in the camera until it gets over the blues :). I tried to post the full resolution images at photo.net but some exceeded the limits. You can see the reduced resolution images at http://photos.yahoo.com/johnappl or a few of the full resolution images at http://www.photo.net/shared/community-member?user_id=1541415. There are 2 sets of 4 taken as quickly as I could change cameras but there might be some variations due to clouds passing, wind blowing, or my general failure to observe the minimum focus distance. Regardless of price, the color accuracy seems to improve with technology. For fleeting action shots, the fixed focus cameras have a real advantage in speed to capture, even with half-pressing the shutter button on the JVC. The last picture is of my dog packing her catching rewards in like skoal.

OK, before I blew this camera up with a bad FIRMWARE.BIN upload(the dreaded 'three beeps o' death'), I opened it and adjusted the lens' focus to about 2.5" I also make a small periscope flash re-directer(or?) from a paperclip box. Anyway, I shot some tests and was pretty happy with the results.

Yes the 6430 fw cameras appear to show much more detail. Though the 2 pictures process to 1280x860, are we seeing the difference between what is claimed as 1.3MP vs 2MP of 2 different resolution image sensors? I may have missed something in the discussion threads, but if this is the case, it makes sense that the inoperability with the earlier 1.3MP foxz2 sw misdecodes a different (longer?) data stream of a 6430 camera - I mention this because of posts which give the impression that the later fw "broke" the useability of foxz2. Granted, one might think that the different sensor would warrant a hw number bump, but in reality, maybe the pcb didn't change, and the software could recognize the sensor upgrade by the firmware loaded.

ive used the cheezfoxz vs the flatfoto drivers on the same camera (just unchecked the erase after download box)
and switched twain scource in ifranview the two pics are very different the flat foto wile slightlly grainy
has what looks like better focus over the cheezfoxz driver if someone has a cheez camera itwould be nice to see if
there own driver purposely processes there pictures to give them that "softer effect"
as for me if i want it softened id rather do it later in ifranview.
(one you take take it away you cant get it back)
the cheez camera was a point and shoot camera that had complaints in its reviews about being blurry
also the driver writers may have put the softer processing software because they did not like
the graininess of there pics and just over done the processing in there driver ruining an otherwise good
product
correct me if im wrong sailpix but the driver foxz flatfoto do do some image processing wile
downloading from the camera proabally making a jpeg out of it
and another personal note between the two photos the cheez one looks like a progressive scan jpeg
missing the last fine detail pass (because of the rather large square blocks aproxx 30 pixels square)
that are absent in the flatfoto pics
witch gives those distant trees that painted on effect
anyway good luck sailpix on your raw decoder. im still expermenting looking for newer endpoints drivers
to get the 300 running
arrrrgh teslafreak

Well if you read the above - I was accused of dishonesty and stupidity. I have listened to the expert opinion and tried again to more accurately capture the extended dynamic claim of SMaL. I am guessing 4 stops of difference in the photos at following link but it could be more. http://www.photo.net/bboard/q-and-a-fetch-msg?msg_id=00BijK
