Post all legal discussions, links and issues here. Thanks for giving me my threads back brite_eye. Sorry about you losing your job yesterday due to budget cuts at Ford. Compuware is an excellent company and I am sure they will find another place suitable for your talents.

Just like him, that brite_eye, hands me the reins just as deer began test flights. There may be some related prior art taking advantage of alternating colors as described in sailpix's decompression patent post. Here is a link to discussion on SN9C10 compression: http://www.linux-projects.org/modules/newbb/viewtopic.php?topic_id=108&forum=3&start=10 containing "since it's a Bayer pattern, there are two color components alternating in each line. Both components are tracked individually and independently"

Hope others find more and Fife's patent examiner googles to find us here.

Does any one find illegality in following scenario:
I deinstall Blue FlatFoto from my system, I then email a single copy of driver to ForkBoy promissing not to use it while on loan to him. He plays with it then deinstalls and sends me a note saying he is done with his educational experience and has deleted all copies of my driver. I can then bore you all with more pictures of sky, ice and snow.

If anyone from SMaL is watching using a network card from a traceable location, Please be sure to inform us on these threads of any suspected copyright or patent violations, otherwise perform an immediate wipe clean on your pc now - and then smash it with a sludge hammer because even writing FFs 00s and random XXs won't guarantee Absolute Annihilation!

agentc0re, There is no standard method yet available from the madness behind these tangled threads. Please watch and wait patiently - we will post a method in "1 2 many 4 all dummies" thread as soon as one has been confirmed.

These guys have been busy!
Patent application for digital cameras with battery chargers

I love Claim #23:

23. A rechargeable camera power source comprising: a printed circuit board having a first side, a second side and a pair of conductive pads disposed on the second side, the board defining a pair of apertures, each of the apertures configured to provide a passage between the first side and the second side; and a rechargeable battery comprising: a planar battery body disposed substantially parallel and adjacent to the first side of the printed circuit board; and a pair of conformable battery terminals, each of the terminals passing through a respective board aperture and bonded to a respective one of the conductive pads.

(a first side, AND a second side? And holes through it, that go through both one side and the other side? :) )

@dakotamod: 2 all living near SMaL people, ...You talking to me? I think I'll keep a low profile for the time being, they're close enough to send goons to my door in person.

I haven't read all of their other patent apps. that well - just skimmed 'em to see if there was anything that looked like a serious clue to the RAW compression mechanism.

My favorite, so far, in 20040135903 is:
[0059] On a white noise image, each dropped bit of image data is found to result in an increase of the compression ratio by about 12.5%..... etc.

This sounds very scientific and learned and all. But, when I stepped back a bit I believe that it is saying when they drop bits from every byte of data, the compression improves by 1/8th for each bit dropped. Duh? This isn't a claim though - just background "noise".

Heh... Gotta hand it to 'em for originality though - that's the most creative definition of 'lossless' compression I have heard in some time.

While morcheeba makes nightly progress, those trying to decipher compression seem lost wondering and wallowing without any end in sight. If I were a patent examiner, I would have to grant Fife's application on basis of non-obviousness and novelty that clearly cannot be accomplished using prior art by those trained in compression techniques.

dakotamod, thank goodness the average examiner is smarter than you! If I were the examiner (for Fife there should be more than one but I think they often work 1 2 1 or 1 2 many 4 a few), I would simply reject it outright without further study based on "The specification must include a written description of the invention and of the manner and process of making and using it, and is required to be in such full, clear, concise, and exact terms as to enable any person skilled in the technological area to which the invention pertains, or with which it is most nearly connected, to make and use the same." from http://www.uspto.gov/web/offices/pac/doc/general/index.html#patent .

Ya - it's nowhere near "full, clear, concise and exact", that's why we're wallowing and wondering and wandering and weaving and ... Fortunately I enjoy figuring out puzzles like this and I have some history with image compression so the details don't scare me.

Thanks for the patent basis lookup brite_eye - I really would expect that this one doesn't get granted based on what's there. I'm not sure where they go from that - can you clean up your application and refile quickly? I'm sorta surprised considering the number of patents that these guys are tied to - seems sloppy.

Beyond being incomplete in spots (i.e. multiplex mechanism), there are things which are internally inconsistent. Lately I've been trying to make the histogram algorithms work... [0072] says that all the histogram bins are initialized to 0, but then [0091] explains that each bin must be at least 1 for arithmetic compression to work.

Then there is the claims section... Claims 20 and 22 are the same. Claim 23 seems like a rewrite of claim 21. Claim 12 looks like a combination of minor details in claims 10 and 11. WTF? Did they submit the rough draft?

Anyways... I'm trying to find a way through this mess to figure it out. There's also the possibility that the compression isn't what is described in this patent application - but where things are clearly described, the compression does appear to match the patent app. (So, we'll keep wandering through the maze looking for the way out.)

At least one and probably two moderators on photo.net are now deleting my forum posts!!!
An interesting relation may exist between Keith Fife and Philip Greenspun:

"Philip Greenspun, a well known writer and MIT instructor on the development of community web sites, founded photo.net in the early 90's as a showcase for his own travel writing and photography." from photo.net about.

"After a year I came back to join some friends at an MIT spinoff company called Symbolics (we made Lisp Machines). Since then I've been involved in research at MIT and startup companies founded by MIT grads." from Philip's biography on photo.net.

Does anyone have suggestions for alternative photo sites where I can display my photos, discuss my opinions, present hacked results and in general freely express myself? And for $25 or less per year that I already gave photo.net?

Have we evolved at all from the 60's - Jethro Tull Lyrics: http://remus.rutgers.edu/JethroTull/Albums/ThickAsABrick-lyrics.html? Some extracts that tingle my mind:
"your wise men don't know how it feels to be thick as a brick"
"The poet and the wise man stand behind the gun"

Another perhaps pertinent song "Welcome To The Machine" by Pink Floyd: - http://www.lyricsfreak.com/p/pink-floyd/108849.html

Bots have been hitting photo.net giving high 7/7 ratings to nudes and 1/1 ratings to other categories. I have been wrongfully accused by some as having been involved because they fear people who enjoy hacking highs. I think it far more likely that a disgruntled photo.net user has created the problem than a visitor passing through our threads. I hope my work on photo.net is not deleted due to hacking fears or even my suggestion above of colusion between Philip and Keith. If anyone thinks they can offer help on how to stop the bots - please obtain a free photo.net ID and reply to Abuse of ratings thread in Site Feedback forum.

morcheeba, you must agree with daBass and avoid the annoying thread - you missed my Guinness. I received an interesting hit on my web log today from painewebber.com

A WHOIS search reveals the administrative contact as "IP Group, Legal Department"
in Weehawken, NJ.

binaryweaver, Scary? not for me but for you - what to do? You may want a disclaimer of some sort on your page along with a request to immediately notify you by email of any unknown infraction you may be guilty of.

@binaryweaver - I wouldn't worry too much about the hits from PaineWebber. Most likely a bored employee surfing from work... it's (although not exactly common) not unusual for a company to put down its legal department as the administrative contact for the corporate web site, since if someone's writing directly to their WHOIS contact (despite the typically numerous contact addresses listed on the site itself), chances are good they're (making a DMCA/copyright/trademark claim/other legal complaint about the site) looking for a good lawyerly p*ssing contest anyway. Just my $0.02USD (as a WHOIS admin contact for several years)

Exactly right Drmn4ea. Painewebber's domain and website is part of their company's intellectual property so it makes sense for the IP arm of the law department to have control of it. AFAIK, Paine Webber doesn't offer legal services, so I think you are safe.

Just a repost of last comment from sailpix in decompression thread (I am still hoping there is an occasional observer lurking that will or should reply if there is any illegality):

Finally, I've been thinking about what I should do with the details of the smalraw
image compression. One approach is that I just post a detailed-enough high-level
description of the compression process - i.e. a description of what that kind of
black box would do. Then someone else (i.e. not me) writes a code to decompress
the smallraw image data. The goal here that the details of SMaL's code (which we
don't want to misappropriate) stay disconnected from code written to process the
images on the cameras we have bought.
_______________________________________

I would describe the high-level description as an expanded understandable version of patent application. I wonder if patent is denied whether sailpix's words would/could be used as a guide to rewrite application.
