I just picked up 2 CVS red cameras, i have successfully unlocked them and downloaded the firmware, but the firmware is different from the tutorial given in the cvs red camera mods.

Info on my camera
FIRMWARE 6520
HARDWARE 06
TYPEID 27 < this is different
CMP TYPEID 27 < this is different
ID LAMSSMAL0000
REALM ID 00

Both cameras have the same firmware but i already damaged one so that all it does is the double beep and nothing else.
For the other camera which still works, i uploaded both the firmware and the entire flash to here.
http://www.geocities.com/kiram9spam/RedPV2flashimg.zip
http://www.geocities.com/kiram9spam/redpv26520Firm.zip
could someone send me either a properly mod'd firmware or tell me how to mod this different firmware?
Also, if the hardware revision is the same for all cameras, we should be able to interchange firmware. perhaps people could post their haxed firmwares so that others could just upload a known working copy.
Thx.

Kman, we don't exchange stuff that is somebody else's copyright here. The firmware you're offering is owned and copyrighted by SMaL. Besides being illegal, exchanging warez puts the legal reverse-engineering happening here in a very bad light.

I have written a small utility that tells you where the camera unlock byte is in various firmware levels - it's called pv2flag and you can find the link to it in the "Links 1 2 Many 4 All" thread. Unless there are drastic changes, it should work for future firmware revisions to come.

Additionally, the http://www.linux-hacker.net/cgi-bin/UltraBoard/UltraBoard.pl?Action=ShowPost&Board=cameras&Post=47 thread is full of unlock locations for various 6520 models.

BTW, the double-beeping means the camera is hosed. It's now in bootloader mode, and nobody here yet knows how to get out of that... you can't simply reflash it to fix it.

Ok, thank you very much, sry about posting the firmware, it says i cant modify my post, so i will just take down the link. Also one other question. how does one open the raw image files that i have taken? so far i have not been able to get anything but garbage.

Kman, no worries. We just have to be extra careful the way we do things around here, since we don't want to give any justification for legal action. I'm sure SMaL would love to squash us if they had grounds.

Regarding the RAW images - you can't open up them up directly. Sailpix is working on a real decoder which will do this, but until he finishes there are 2 options...

1) If you're using an earlier rev camera, you can download and install the foxz2 drivers. This will allow you to download and convert to jpegs. Just go to a TWAIN enabled application and obtain images from a TWAIN source.

2) If you're using a later rev camera, you need the flatfoto 2mp drivers. You'll know you're in this boat if you try option number (1) and the pictures come out blue. These drivers will also allow you to download and covert to jpegs See the FAQ thread for info on flatfoto drivers - they aren't easy to get.

FYI i was playing with the connector, and i found that pin 4 is able to power up the camera if you apply 3 volts on it (it is connected to the positive pattery terminal) this was probably done so that they could program the camera without putting batteries in it. Also, I would recommend using pin 10 for the usb ground instead of pin 7. this is because pin 10 has a small inductor which can act as a fuse, preventing (hopefully) distruction to your motherboard. just a few thoughts... and good luck on getting a custom raw image decoder working.... i cant wait.

Dude! This means that if you put rechargable AA cells in the camera, and, with a properly sized resistor between the +5V from the USB side and this +3V pin on the camera side (and maybe a DC regulator to clamp the voltage at +3V), you'll be able to convert the camera so that it recharges via the USB port!

j_tetazoo may have just described how Radioshack Flatfoto's recharge themselves! Who will be first with a rechargeable drugstore digital?

I'm not really an electronics geek, so maybe somebody with real circuit-building experience can respond...

. sized resistor between the +5V from the USB
> side and this +3V pin on the camera side (and
> maybe a DC regulator to clamp the voltage at
> +3V)

...can't you use a diode or two to drop the voltage sufficiently, rather than a full blown regulator? It will be connected to a power source, so we're not really worried about efficiency.

Also, would this arrangement require a capacitor to smooth plug-in spikes, or should rechargebles be able a small amount of spiking? Or would there even be negligible spiking on plug-in?

Kiram & j_tetazoo, congrats on opening up a new area of hacking interest!

to limit the charging current a 25 ohm resistor should do
to high a value resistor and youll never charge the batteries
as to low a value you will overcharge the batteries if left on the usb continually
id evin go with a 10 ohm for starters
but thats my story damm ita starting to hail outside
arrrrgh

I did a bit of searching for a similar hack and found gold here: http://www.felesmagus.com/visor/ Among other things on this page, it details the charging circuit for a Visor using 2 AA rechargeables (the author suggests using alkaline rechargeables, but other rechargeables will work too.)

Basically it amounts to a 10 ohm resistor (right on the money teslafreak!) and two 1N914 diodes to bring the +5 volts down to about +3.2 volts. I believe they're all just in series - again, someone with a clue please confirm.

Personally, I'd build this right into the transfer cable so it'll work for all your cameras. I'd build it today, but unfortunately I pulled the unused pins from my cable when I needed to get rid of a short (ran out of desolder braid) :(

Time to get my hands on another palm serial cable.

74 and sunny here... I highly recommend Atlanta!

I heartily endorse this line of hacking for these cameras - rechargables would be nice. If I was doing that I'd search for manufacturer's suggested charging circuitry, reverse engineer one of the non "disposable" SMaL cameras, or reverse engineer a USB-powered battery charger.

And the RAW decoder is progressing nicely Kiram.

Please discontinue use of this thread for recharging discussions. Instead post in the newly created "Recharging hacks - 1 2 many 4 all" thread.
