I have a CVS "RED" with an LCD screen I have been sitting on for sometime. Recently, I found a Palm III cradle on eBay for cheap, and I have a USB cable I can part with. Is there anyone out there who would be willing to solder together a cable for me? I'd be willing to pay a few bucks, or make some sort of swap arrangment.

Drop a reply here, or e-mail me at t r p a p u r a AT localnet.com

Thanks

Tom

I was asking for help, because I really don't have the time to do this, or a soldering iron. If I sent the pieces to someone and had it done for a couple bucks, it would be well worth it to me.

Thanks anyway.

Stevo,

I created a Palm III/mouse cable for an original dakota (the blue one with the silver-ish highlights on the front) - should this same cable/pin selection work for the new red PV2?

Thanks!

I tried building my own cable for a CVS Blue, following the directions for the Centronics / USB cable.
Unfortunately, I don't have soldering tools or very steady hands, so I tried (please don't laugh) holding the cables in place with hot glue alone.

This didn't work at all, and actually net me a burn on my finger from the cable when I kept trying to get it to work - seems something didn't go right.

I'd be willing to compensate someone for a premade cable, as well.

I can be reached through here, or via [dhmo at pixelechoes dot net].

Thanks. :)

The best best cable is a Palm m105 or Palm III hotsync connector! hands down! These things are dirt cheap on ebay. I managed to search for terms like "lot of palm" and find deals with people trying to get rid of 3 or 4 at a time in one auction. I managed to get one lot of 4 for around 10 bucks plus shipping. About $25 total. This will work light years better then modifying a centronics printer cable.

The Palm III cradle circuit board pads are labeled. The information is on a wonderful webpage http://www.maushammer.com/systems/dakotadigital/dl-palm.html

His instructions for wiring are:
Hole E1: Ground (Black)
Hole E2: Data - (White)
Hole E3: Data + (Green)
Hole E5: +5V (Red)

Here (click) is a picture of the cable I constructed using his method (taken with one of my PV2s. kinda close range, so its a bit blurry. And thats after photoshopping... Not so great camera for closeups.)

I just took apart a dakota camera and got some usb mini-b connectors after reading rumkin’s article (http://rumkin.com/reference/dakota/) …

I’m having problems understanding how to attach/solder wires directly to the mini-b connector… Or do I have this wrong?
The pins are very close together. Do I need to get a sleeve for each pin and then solder the sleeve onto a wire. THen do I solder the other part of the wire to the camera?
Also, I couldn’t figure out why it was so hard taking apart the camera…
Nobody suggested removing the direction sticker on the back. Once you do this, there are 3 screws to undo…
The camera still is taking pictures, so I hope I haven’t trashed it.
If possible, could someone answer my question and even better, show a close up picture of how to fasten the wires to the usb using a mini-b connector.
