THanks,

yes the 6550 i think has been unlocked using the hardware method
the keys are different in these and if the nvramdat file can be saved forkboy
will look for stored keys and incorporate into the pvtool program

Today, I purchased a CVS red camera (with preview LCD). The firmware shows as 6550. I've constructed an interface cable using a Centronics printer cable according to websites I've read.

When I connect the camera, Windows (xp pro), a balloon-help thingie says "USB Device not recognized", and device manager shows "Unknown device". The LibUsb drivers are not accepted by windows' driver update functionality.

From what I have read, is it logical to assume that the 6550 firmware has additional protection that has yet to be hacked? Or has it been hacked? If it has, I would be very grateful of any information leading to a successful hack.

I almost had it, I got the smal000000 ID on my 6550 Firmware camera then I lost it to the low beep of corrupted death of the bin file. This may save you from the same fate. I was successful using the “popping battery door open” trick just after the flash to get the ID to change, but it took many many tries. I noticed in between tries that the camera holds a small charge that will keep the camera from fully powering down. Instead if waiting for the charge to dissipate I was able to use the batteries installed backwards (reversed polarity) and then make a very brief contact with the contacts on the door to fully reset the camera. This allowed me to speed up my attempts to unlock the camera. On the last attempt that was successful, I made the mistake of removing the batteries and letting the charge despite completely while I was putting the camera back together. On the next boot up I would only get the low beep of death. :( What I found interesting; while the batteries were installed I could power up and down the camera with no problem after I changed the ID, but once the camera had lost all power then it found the bin file corrupted. Looks like I am now stuck reinstalling the Firmware (need to read up more on this topic). What firmware should I use on this camera?

The 6520 firmware works perfectly in the 6550 hardware (well, I did ensure that between my 6520 and 6550 cameras, that the HW revision, typeid, and cmp typeid were all the same).

The best way to unlock the 6550 firmware would be to follow the HOWTO found here: http://camerahacks.10.forumer.com/viewtopic.php?t=318

You will also need to obtain a fairly recent version of PV2Tool and LibUSB-Win32 found here:
http://sourceforge.net/projects/pv2devkit/ (PV2 Tool)
http://sourceforge.net/projects/libusb-win32/ (LibUSB-Win32)

I have updated the PV2mods.htm page to reflect the new information available on hacking the 6550. I have included a properly modified libusb.inf file for download. I sent updates today to the three folks who are mirroring the site for me, so I hope to see it available soon on those mirrors. For now, you can get to the revised pages at:

http://webpages.charter.net/tvickers89/PV2mods.htm

Thanks to all the folks for sorting out the 6550.

I have followed the steps on your site to unlock the cvs red camera with firmware 6550. I get all the way to the step where the camera is unlocked and i scan for the keys. I follow the popup message and when i hit unlock it says that it cannot unlock with the given keys. I am using pv2tool 2.14. I tried it with 2.13 and the same thing happened. I was wondering if you knew what causes this and how to fix it.

Timing is important when doing the legal hack on the 65x0 cameras. If you leave the USB power off too long, the RAM will decay. Not long enough, and the camera locks up.

On my tutorial site, I suggest 3 seconds as the "golden" time. Do the hack, but unplug the USB port for 3 seconds, then replug and continue the steps.
