For what it is worth, sorphin found a factory password for the TiVo. Oddly enough it is...

factory

This password doesn't gain you much, and may not work on all TiVo's. After you read the following links you will know as much about it as I do.

It was gone for a while, and there was a big argument about posting it in the first place and now the thread is magicly "closed".
For a while I thought I wouldn't get it.

That sort of behavior on the part of AVS and TiVo is one of the reasons I am looking for better places to discuss TiVo 'enhancements'. Corporate censorship is still censorship.

The 'factory' password for the PROM really only does two things- makes it easy to trash your TiVo, and allows you to enable the serial BASH prompt without having to open the case.

The password only works on a small subset of the units. If the password does not work on yours, and you've already opened the case and enabled the shell another way, if you still want to see the menu you can reset your PROM password to any string you choose.

BASH# crypto -srp 'factory'

Okay,

A) That "behavior" had nothing to do with AVS or Tivo. It was discovered by a member of the forum who posted it, then removed it, and finally posted it again.

B) It's now in the Tivo Hack FAQ which is made by these same members, not by Tivo or AVS.

C) You got it wrong. It's:

crypto -u -srp "factory"

to reset it. Without the -u it won't work, and you have to use double quotes.
