I have seen some mention in a few newsforums and such about the potential of using a Pc to copie the tivo service files from one machien to another and then some changing some flags to make the machine "think" its serive is on. I guess there was some success but with a few oddities... if i can find the link ill drop it here but right now im surprised nobody has jumped in here and freaked at this question... in the AVS forum its a major 'No-No"

Hello!

I'd also be interested in this. at the minimum,

without a subscription, to patch the software so it won't ask you to sign-up (REMINDER).

I'd be happy with just being able to use it like a VCR.

2). I've heard people are able to transfer the program info downloded from one Tivo to another. This would be great for me since i just bought a second one for my bedroom.

3). I'm pretty sure the station line ups, times, channels can be compiled off the web. TVGuide.com has the listings.

So Linux people please put your attention on this cool device.

Thanks

me too. I don't want to hack into the TiVo service and steal anything from them.
I just want to be able to use my TiVo as a digital VCR and not get any messages
from TiVo reminding me that I'm not using their serivce any more.

I paid for my Digital VCR ( if they under priced it and expected a monthly revenu
to make up for it... that's not my problem ) and I want to use it as a digital
VCR.

Well, I guess this breaks down into several different Hacks Here:

1. Hacking the Nag Screens to simply Kill their mention of their service. This would still leave you with nothing more than a fancy manual VCR as their service provided you with updates, and the ability to
Choose from up to date realtime listings.

2. Hacking the machine to use a secondary service. Use existing Listing Databases to provide the Tivo with a similar service to the Tivo Listings. This would require someone dedicating servers or space somewhere to serve the data… potential lawsuit from Tivo also, unsure future in this.

3. Hacking an alternate way for other machines to receive the “tivo” Listings Data. Either allowing Others to receive the Actual TIVO updates and Listings data without registering at all. This would be really illegal.. basically stealing their service.

4. Hacking a way for people with multiple machines to share their updates and listings without having each machine call and DL seperately. (Nill point if we had ethernet or highspeed hookups that didn’t tie up the phone)

5. Hackign a way for legitimate users to receive their data/listings over a highspeed connection like DLS/Cable using the Serial Port, Modem Port, or through some addon ethernet option.

Now don’t get me wrong… the mention of illegality is just a note. I’d like to see people work on some of this if only as an intellectual exercise… $5 is the one im particulary interested in and the one I know has been looked at already. Ill move over some of the info into a new thread to try and generate talk on it here where the talking is open and uninhibited

#5 has been done via the built in Serial port. See the avs forum for details.

I'll be looking at #1 and #2.

I think that several people that frequent the avs tivo board will direct people over
here for stuff like this.
