Scientific Atlanta Explorer 2000
Is the Explorer 2000 hackable?

I have been looking at the possibility of "hacking" the Explorer 2000. I am wondering if anyone has any information on the possibility of turing it into a "TiVo" like machine. From what I am finding on the web it looks like the Explorer is a very scaled down pc with a microSparc CPU. I am debating buying one on ebay just to see what the "guts" are. Then again, I have three from the cable company so maybe I will just take a peek

Any information would be appreciated!

I am interested too - I just happen to have one.

As for "taking a peek" My local hardware store sold me a set of secure screwdriver bits for $15 tha includes the securetorx bit to open the SA case.

I will post pics of mine if you don't want to open yours - but I found no security devices other than the torx screws.

Your big probem is that this thing has absolutely no interface for storage. I am interested in the "data" connector and Ethernet connector on the back - if either of these can allow control from a PC, it's a simple matter to set up an s-video in capture card.

Of course, I imagine that the moment we try to change the programming of one of these, it will stop receiving digital cable. There is no legal way to receive the digital signal on a box that the cable company doesn't own.

In addition, there's probably no ILLEGAL way to do it either. Unlike sattelite, the cable service is 2-way communication between the box and it's provider - it needs it's own, unique decode key and it needs updated keys on a regular basis. Cloning someone else's smartcard will result in the provider immediately seeing 2 identical cards and they will have a few questions for the person registered to that card.

Still, if we can just get the thing to take direction from the LAN port and maybe stream out a picture, we can make use of it.

Me?? I might just sell this thing to finance my pvr project.
