Tivo, Replay or Sony how to program it yourself

New MessageTivo, Replay or Sony how to program it yourself (modified 0 times) machack
I was messing with my Tivo today, made a total copy of the main hard drive so I could mess with it.
My copy drive boots OK, I know better than to let it call in, they use the serial number on the drive as part of the ID.
I looked into some of the sectors and tried to modify some text I saw for menus and IT WORKED! Just changed some letters.
The next logical step is to modify a routine, like when you go to "phone setup", I would have it call my own routine I will overwrite their routine I don't need.
This is fun! The only problem I see is how to make it boot Linux from a total boot, I don't know what their boot ROM wants to see. I am thinking of putting Lilo binary right after their boot code starts up on the HD or in that "phone setup" area and point it to another HD I have already formatted for Linux on the slave IDE.
If that works, I would make a old small drive my boot drive and the slave a 40gb drive!
Anyone know what video drivers I need to have?

First off, Tivo runs Linux PPC already.

Second off, people have hacked the hell out of it, although not to any great extent. However, there is a really cool hack to give you a shell prompt through the serial port on the back.

Better than that, it looks like someone took a 14 hr unit and made it into a 52 hr one by adding a 30 gig drive.
Looks like they used the Linux serial port idea and "blessed" the second drive.
The guys that did it are waiting for Tivo approval to post the info, so we may never see it as it gets covered up due to politics.
Any Linux gurus out there think they can figure it out and let us know? I only know enough to be dangerous.
